SUMMARY
The letters of Pavla Dušková first came to our attention in the late 1990s, when two mem-
bers of the present editorial team were pursuing the history of the Egyptian Revival in Bohe-
mia. Later on, one of us came across her husband, Cyril Dušek, the Czechoslovak diplomat
in Egypt, who established the new legation in Cairo in 1922/23. Czechoslovak encounters
with Egypt in the inteT-war period proved to be altogether more prosperous than initially
expected, especially in the 1920s and, despite the Great Depression, even in the 1930s.
An assorted community of people emerged in letters, papers, bequests and books. They
lived mostly in Cairo and Alexandria, and their life stories included vocations from paint-
ers, musicians and physicians to artisans, cooks, head waiters and nursemaids. Apart from
the residents themselves, travellers (and travelogues) thrived, amateuT students of Egyptian
colloquial Arabic emerged among Czech trade school teachers and enthusiastic boy scouts
went on foot from Palestine to Egypt.
Czechoslovak Egyptology, best known as a background for the Demotist school of
František Lexa and foT the remarkable personality of Jaroslav Černý, was shown to have had
a broad context of public interest as well as a foundation in the pragmatic ties of the Czech
lands to Egypt. Establishing regular diplomatic contacts were then but one piece in the puz-
zle, even if a crucial one.
It took a further ten years before we reconsidered editing the surviving letters of Pavla
Dušková with a commentary and a biographical study of her and her husband. This is the
result. The volume contains biographies of both protagonists - biographies, which by ne-
cessity had to be quite abridged. Both spouses had broad ties to Czech cultural and political
life. They came of age at the turn of the century, in a fin-de-siecle atmosphere seething with
exotic yearning about distant lands and the distant past. They entered employment in edu-
cation and journalism, and eventually became part of the elite of the new republic driven
by the Myth of the Castle” - a myth which, regardless of its propaganda character, was
a crucial element in the building of Masaryk Czechoslovakia, its ethos of democracy, culture
and tolerance was positive and remained a lasting legacy, even if Czechoslovakia and its
citizens often fell short of its expectations. Eor people like the Dušeks, however, the Masaryk
ideal of an educated, skilled and cultivated Czechoslovak citizen was a legitimation of their
efforts and their ultimate goal.
The protagonists
The protagonists are Pavla Dušková (1880-1954) and heT husband Cyril Dušek (1881-
1924). Pavla Dušková was bom in Prague into the family of Ottomar Smolík, a composer and
organist. Her father was married three times (widowed twice) and Pavla was bom during the
third marriage of her father. Among her numerous siblings, we find Vojtěch Smolík, an excel-
lent organist and composer like their father. Pavla herself was given an advanced education,
which had only recently become available to women in Bohemia - she studied at one of
the girls colleges of Prague and then attended a distinguished art school - the Academy of
Arts, Architecture and Design. Among the school s professors we find the respected painters
Karel V. Mašek or Erantišek Ženíšek (of the National Theatre fame) or the Egyptian Khedivial
court architect, František Schmoranz, the author of the urban plan and major buildings of
the Egyptian city of Tsmailia. Her fellow students included Marie Hoppe-Teinitzerová, the

textile designer influenced by William Morris and the Arts and Crafts movement, and later
a co-founder of the Artěl.
Pavla Smolíková finished her schooling around 1905-1906, and started to work as an in-
dependent teacher. Her first post was in the city of Brno, which had a well-developed organi-
sation of girls schools - the “Vesna schools. The Vesna was a charity founded initially as
an establishment for women musicians in the 1870s. It was, however, quickly transformed
into a charity with a much wider scope, focused on women’s education and covering col-
lege-style schooling for future arts and science female teachers, clerks and accountants as
well as vocational (“industrial as they were then called) courses for housekeepers, cooks,
maids, and specialised classes for nannies and nurses. The “Vesna” schools offered a day or
boarding option. The teachers were both men and women and many of them were excellent
specialists in their field. Zdenka Vorlová-VlČková, for example, was a notable painter trained
in the studios of Vienna and Munich. The Vesna also organised musical evenings, concerts,
a series of public lectures and study days and similar events in Brno. One of the officers
of the charity was also Zdenka Janáčková, wife of Leoš Janáček, the renowned Moravian
composer. In short, Pavla Smolíková, who worked as an assistant teacher at Vesna, entered
another stimulating educational organisation.
In 1909, she returned to Prague and accepted a full-time teaching position at the new
girls college in Praha-Holešovice. Her colleagues included Ludmila Matiegková, the future
Egyptologist, and Alice Masaryková, the daughter of Charlotte and T. G. Masaryk, and the
future First Lady of Czechoslovakia (Alice had to agree to take on this role after her mother s
death). Pavla Smolíková, later Dušková, taught at the Holešovice College until 1919, when
she accepted another life role.
Pavla s future husband, Cyril Dušek was bom in Prague into a worker’s family. His father
was married twice and Cyril had a dozen siblings. Their careers differed widely and includ-
ed a well-known linguist, Vavřinec Josef Dušek, Bořivoj Dušek, attaché of an embassy, Bo-
huslav Dušek, a bank clerk, Jiří Dušek, a factory mechanic and their sister Růžena Dušková,
a seamstress. Generally speaking, the Dušeks had shown a considerable upward mobility.
C. Dušek attended a grammar school and had some noteworthy teachers, such as Jiří
Guth-Jarkovský, best known as a friend of Pierre de Coubertin and later as the founder of a
Czechoslovak equivalent of Debrett s and Emily Post’s.
After ending his grammar school days successfully with a final examination (maturita),
Cyril Dušek studied law and developed a deep-seated interest in art. Still a student, he be-
came a contributor and later a regular member of the staff of the periodical Čas (Time). He
wrote theatre and other cultural reviews. He also frequented Prague saions - notably that of
the painter Zdenka Braunerová. Dušek admired Braunerová greatly.
Dusek s wide ranging interests and fascination with the Arts and Crafts movement as
well as with the “decadent art scene of fin-de-siecle Prague did not prevent him from be-
coming a serious journalist and eventually a respected legal expert. He assisted the famous
solicitor V. Bouček in 1906 in the Masaryk versus the clergy court case. This brought Dušek in
close touch with the Masaryk circle.
Pavla Smolíková and Cyril Dušek first met probably in 1898. They shared a fervent inter-
est in art and literature, reading together a novel by the Austrian writer Peter Altenberg, and
corresponded concerning Dusek’s own first literary attempts. However, the romantic Dušek
had more than one love interest and Pavla severed her ties with him in 1900. They rekindled
their relationship in 1903 and eventually married in 1910, but only after both of them had
secured stable employment and permanent incomes in Prague, she at the Holešovice girls
school and he as the editor of Čas and a lawyer.
The First World War broke out in the late summer of 1914 and changed the perspec-
tives of the Dušek marriage. Cyril Dušek took an active part in the political group Maffie.
This group supported Masaryk s ideas, which drifted gradually towards the dissolution of
the Hapsburg monarchy. Dušek, along with many others, was arrested, as was his wife.
Her spell in prison was short; his lasted from 1915 to 1917 (when the new Emperor Charles
declared an amnesty). While imprisoned, Dušek caught tuberculosis and was soon in grave
danger. Once freed from prison, he recuperated in a sanatorium in Prague, where his wife
joined him. Shortly after the new republic was established in the autumn of 1918, a new
career began for both of them.
I SUMMARY
The first Czechoslovak envoy to Egypt
Czechoslovakia was established in October 1918 as a successor state to Austria-Hungary.
The state harboured between 60 to 70 % of the industrial potential of the former monarchy
and it was vital for its economic interests in general and for a healthy foreign trade balance
in particular to keep as many trade connections as possible. Northern Africa and Western
Asia - The Orient for short - were dynamic markets, which proved to be of considerable
interest for the international trade of the Hapsburg monarchy and continued in this role for
Czechoslovakia.
The new state literally inherited state officials as well as some of the infrastructures of the
former monarchy, but the Czechoslovak government also had to prepare a number of state
officials. The new government, established in 1919, had to take part in an intense marathon
of diplomatic negotiations in Paris and, simultaneously, it had to establish a standard net-
work of consulates, legations and embassies.
A fully trained diplomatic corps was not yet available and the new political elite had
to be drawn from lawyers, university professors and a few select industrialists. For many,
entering the world of international relations, with its inter-cultuTal meetings and complex
etiquette, turned into a sort of a diplomatic crash course . In areas where different cultures
and the colonial issues of the various international powers had to be taken into account, as
was the case in the Orient, specialist help was needed - and some of the newly educated
employees of the Czechoslovak Ministry of Foreign Affairs had literally a crash course in geo-
politics of the Middle East taught by foremost Orientalists Alois Musil and Bedřich Hrozný.
Cyril Dušek took part in the Paris negotiations and soon became a trusted diplomat ֊ he
absorbed his new role swiftly, started to build a professional library and accepted the post of
minister plenipotentiary in Switzerland. The Dušeks moved to Bern. Pavla Dušková had to
take an indefinite leave of absence from her teaching job at the Holešovice school and start
a new career - that of a diplomat s wife.
However, the Bern posting, professionally successful, was detrimental for Dusek s
health. He fell ill with acute pleurisy and had to return to Prague in 1921. His highly devel-
oped sense of personal responsibility and duty, however, prevented him from taking any
extended leave ֊ Edvard Beneš, his superior (as Minister of Foreign Affairs) and friend -
organised the nomination of Dušek for Egypt with the prospect of becoming either consul-
general or minister plenipotentiary. Egypt was chosen as it was supposedly beneficial for
pulmonary diseases. The Dušeks left Prague in January 1922.
There already was a Czechoslovak consulate in Alexandria, headed at that time by the
consul Antonin Blahovský, an ambitious and somewhat tight-laced gentleman. The Dušeks
travelled via Trieste and Alexandria to Cairo, and Pavla Dušková established her first house-
hold in the Cairo Hotel Continental. Their ensuing efforts led to the establishment of a proper
legation with residence only in 1923, as the Ministry back in Prague proved a slow and in-
decisive superior. Eventually, after much haggling via telegrams and letters, the finances
were sent which covered the Dušeks expenses properly and enabled them to rent a villa
at Qasr el-Aini, near the Garden City in Cairo. Dušek was named minister plenipotentiary
and was duly received by King Fuad 1 in an audience (as was his wife by Queen Nazli). The
legation offices opened in the new villa and Mrs Dušková ran a proper residence complete
with household personnel, regular visitors, afternoon teas and all the accoutrements of a
British-style khawaga life in Cairo.
Dušek entered the diplomatic circles of Cairo, and both he and his wife were regularly
invited to the Royal Court as well as to the British Residency of Sir Edmund Allenby and Lady
Allenby. Dušek was also in regular contact with the burgeoning Czechoslovak community in
Cairo, which included Czech, German and Jewish subjects of the new republic. His contact
with Egyptian politicians had little chance to develop as his mission ended abruptly in early
1924. Dušek, an irredeemable smoker and exhausted by his efforts to establish the legation,
had a massive hemoptysis and died in his wife s arms on January 12,1924.
Pavla Dušková ran the legation with the somewhat reluctant help of Blahovský until the
arrival of a new envoy, V. S. Hurban (a friend to Masaryk and a supporter of Jaroslav Černý,

the Egyptologist) and only then returned to Prague in March 1924 with the embalmed body
other husband.
Central Europeans encountering Egypt
The Central European, hence also the Czech, encounter with Egypt was not entirely dis-
similar to that known from other Western countries, in cultural memory, Egypt was the land
of the Bible, of Joseph’s dreams, Pharaohs, princesses, Moses in his basket, the Exodus and
eventually the Holy family hiding from Heroďs henchmen. In historical awareness, it was
the land of the pyramids, of a strange, but captivating art, hieroglyphs and mummies.
Czechs consumed period travelogues and illustrated books, such as those of Georg
Ebers’ (Aegypten in Wort und Bild) and occasionally the more specialised Egyptological
work translated from English, French or German. Egyptology became established in Prague
around 1919, with the assistant professorship of František Lexa at the Charles University.
Egyptian collections came quite early, but mostly remained in private hands, and later
were presented in varied temporary collections - a publicly accessible permanent display
was first established much later, only in 2011.
The response of the Czech arts to the waves of Egyptomania was stable, if lukewarm,
for a long time, but erupted into life with the onset of the Art Nouveau exoticism. Nota-
bly, František Bilek married Egyptian monumentality to his Arts and Crafts-inspired artwork
and architecture, imbued with Christian spirituality. Grand Orientalist painting never really
took off, but painters originating from Bohemia had international fame and success in Paris,
Cairo and London, and - to a more limited extent - in Vienna.
Conceptually, Egypt was part of the ancient world, and as such she enjoyed the status
of a fount of wisdom and knowledge , a place where humanity first attained the levels of
industry, art and spirituality which might be seen as a paragon of civilization. Egypt was,
however, also part of the Orient, and hence subject to many imaginary projections of exotic
allure and seduction, as well as sharp contrasts of poverty and luxury. Simple models of
Saidian Orientalisms, however, do not seem to be effortlessly applicable.
Slowly, visitors as well as armchair travellers came to appreciate the complexity of mod-
em Egyptian society, even if they seldom had a more sustained grasp of the nationalist
struggle and the Egyptian cultural revival.
With the new state, Czechoslovak-Egyptian relations gained some momentum. Oriental
Studies and Egyptology obtained a firmer foothold in Prague in the 1920s and Egypt, an
accessible destination ever since the Austrian Lloyd days, became even closer. The heads
of state undertook visits (President Masaryk to Egypt in 1927 and King Fuad T to Prague in
1929). The commercial community in Cairo grew, and the Baťa Shoe Company signs became
a ubiquitous part of street scenes of larger Egyptian cities.
However, for a Czech family, even if well-educated, interested in the history of art and
willing to embark upon a mission to foster diplomatic ties between the two different coun-
tries, leading a life in Cairo on a day-to-day basis was not a stress-free task.
The letters of Pavla Dušková - an intimate family encounter
Pavla Dušková wrote regularly to her family, starting with the train journey as they left
Czechoslovakia in early January 1922. Her weekly missives were usually addressed to her
sister, her aunt, her mother and her mother-in-law. irrespective of the particular addressee
(often the letters opened with a generic My dears ), the letters were meant to be read aloud
and possibly also circulated in a wider family circle. She or the family later destroyed some
of the letters, especially from a difficult period in 1923, when the legation was struggling for
survival and Pavla’s own mother passed away in FTague.
She was a good writer ֊ her descriptions are lively and rich in detail and show that her
inner literary archive was fed by resources ranging from Baedekers guidebooks to art his-
tory books and biographies of the artists. On occasion, her letters read as a script for a film,
swiftly alternating views of Cairo streets, life in the legation villa, or the beauty of the desert.

I SUMMARY
However, on occasion the reading becomes depressing ֊ Pavla Dušková, a sensitive artist,
was sometimes overwhelmed by the practicalities of a life she struggled with.
Her position was far from easy - she was an independent and educated woman who
gave up her independence and her job to accompany her husband on a diplomatic post-
ing, first in Switzerland, then in Egypt. Tn Egypt, they were left stranded without sufficient
income and in suspense waiting for months on end for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in
Prague to decide whether it wanted a Consulate-general or a fully-fledged legation in Cairo.
Her husband was still ill - his tuberculosis did not improve and he succumbed to his to-
bacco vice, which he had tried to quit, once again. Tn addition, Pavla and Cyril were, ever
since their Bern posting, surrogate parents to their niece Marie Dušková, whose father died
and whose mother struggled with the upbringing of several children.
It is in this context that we must read the letters which slowly change from understand-
ing, sensitive observations of Egyptian life to a hardened colonialist view. Thus, after see-
ing a Muslim funeral in Alexandria “Surrounding this sad and curious spectacle, there are
cars and coaches of Alexandrine fine ladies, having a ride on the Corniche. There are their lap-
dogs looking out of the carriage windows. A military carriage passes by, and no one pays the
slightest attention to the funeral cortege. ... The poor dirty suffering group of people means
much less to them than their own obese overfed lapdog.” (a 1922 letter from Alexandria) -
and later, in Cairo, after struggling with heat, dust and flies - “In Alexandria, there Í felt that
one is doing wrong to these poor natives. That was my first impression. Here however, in
Cairo, l see it differently. One cannot treat them otherwise. Their poverty is their own fault,
caused by their laziness and lackadaisical behaviour. Europeans are working, whereas an
Arab might just sleep on a pavement wrapped up in his dirty cloak, unwashed at least for a
century.... we must procure a veil for my niece ...so many flies here. ... Arabs have... them
like crust on their faces and festering eyes, one never knows when such a fly might land on
one of us.” (1922, from Cairo).
Her fears for her family s health proved justified in the end. Her niece caught diphtheria
and was saved by the prompt help of a local European doctor; her husband, eventually, was
to succumb to his illness.
Nonetheless, being the disenchanted housewife was but one of several aspects of
Duskovâ s Cairene life. Eventually she was in her element when applying her designer s
training to the furnishings of the legation, especially the purchases of furniture and works
of art and their arrangement within the large Art Nouveau building. Seeing ancient art first-
hand was also a fascinating experience. Several trips to the desert and to Giza, Saqqara and
Abusir were enjoyed by the whole family.
There were, of course, many moments, which Pavla Dušková must have found dis-
concerting. She struggled to accommodate the many demands on her language skills. She
spoke Czech, French and German, as did many educated women of her generation with
a background similar to hers. English was a new language foT her. However, her French
needed some polishing, and her English was not yet advanced, although she gained some
confidence during her stay. For a woman running a household full of Arab employees, there
was however one crucial difficulty. Her knowledge of Arabic was very basic and literally
picked up in everyday contact. There was also the not inconsiderable fact that she was not
used to managing a large staff nor brought up in a household with a number of person-
nel and with many public obligations. As her husband s former professor GuthTarkovsky
remarked somewhat tersely diplomatic wives ... were recruited from former teachers ... not
knowledgeable of high society.” This was not a patronizing comment on his fellow teachers,
but a simple fact - running the well-managed household of a civil servant with many public
duties is a profession in itself.
Yet, despite being unprepared for many aspects of her new duties, Pavla Dušková made
the residence function smoothly and she eventually enjoyed herself at the parties and
soirées, designing her own evening dresses as well as visiting the large department stores of
Cairo, including Cicurel, to complement her wardrobe.
Her cross-cultural communication might have fallen short of 21st century expectations -
she is occasionally prejudiced, toward the Egyptians, but also the British or the Jewish mem-
bers of her own Czechoslovak community. With hindsight, it is regrettable and somehow
not worthy of a woman who otherwise had shown much mettle and determination. None-
347

theless, her occasional deplorable xenophobia is in the end balanced by a deep, almost
escapist, admiration for the country, which she could not fully comprehend, but which she
eventually found enthralling: “it is lively here, it is brimming with life, from those animals
and children, dirty as they may be, up to the sinewy touristy ladies ... f would not exchange
the dirt of Cairo for the spotlessness Bern . For the staunch Saidians, this will be just another
Orientalist dream, however, for Pavla Dušková, this was a real-life experience which was raw
and constantly demanding her attention.
Returning to Prague
On January 12,1924, Duskovâ s world sustained a major blow. Her husband Cyril died
suddenly and unexpectedly. The widow, however, pulled herself together in a matter of
hours, requested a ceremony followed by an embalming, and started her preparations for
the journey home. This took some time; she only arrived in Trieste at the very beginning of
March 1924.
As she remarked to her mother-in-law, with whom she moved in, “there would be many
duties. And indeed - Dušková found herself at the centre of Prague social life. She was regu-
larly invited to tea and dinner parties by the Beneš couple (Edvard Beneš was Cyril s supe-
rior as well as an acquaintance) and by her former colleague from the Holešovice College -
Alice Garrigue Masaryková, now in her capacity of the First Lady, and who was rebuilding
Prague Castle with the help of Josip Plečnik.
She also took care other husband s collection of Egyptian antiquities. A large part of it,
containing remarkable figurai ostraca from Deir el-Medina, as well as the funerary cone of
the King s Son of Kush Merimose, was donated in April 1924 to the National Museum (now
in the Náprstek Museum - National Museum in Prague). Another part, with numerous amu-
lets and Greco-Roman terracottas ֊ adorned the collections of the Karásek Gallery which be-
longed to the Sokol movement. (The Sokol being an educational charity focused on national
health and physical training, with some slightly paramilitary overtones).
Also his professional library, featuring a solid selection of books on law, international
relations, diplomacy and statecraft, was donated to the Office of the President, for the use of
future Czechoslovak diplomats and politicians. Dušek and Dušková knew only too well that
proper training would have been needed.
Dušková thus lived in Prague secure with her state pension, and on occasion travelled
to various resorts, including vacationing in the South of France, and probably took an ac-
tive part in charitable work. She went very much under the radar during the Nazi occupa-
tion between 1939-1945, living in the house of her friend and another former colleague
from Holešovice, the Egyptologist, Ludmila Matiegková. There she stayed until 1953, when
she moved to a care home attached to a pulmonary diseases hospital in the historic city of
Kadaň. She died in Kadaň in January 1954, almost exactly 30 years after Cyril.
