Beschreibung: | Main description: Descartes's works are often treated as a unified, unchanging whole. But in Descartes's Changing Mind, Peter Machamer and J. E. McGuire argue that the philosopher's views, particularly in natural philosophy, actually change radically between his early and later works--and that any interpretation of Descartes must take account of these changes. The first comprehensive study of the most significant of these shifts, this book also provides a new picture of the development of Cartesian science, epistemology, and metaphysics. No changes in Descartes's thought are more significant than those that occur between the major works The World (1633) and Principles of Philosophy (1644). Often seen as two versions of the same natural philosophy, these works are in fact profoundly different, containing distinct conceptions of causality and epistemology. Machamer and McGuire trace the implications of these changes and others that follow from them, including Descartes's rejection of the method of abstraction as a means of acquiring knowledge, his insistence on the infinitude of God's power, and his claim that human knowledge is limited to that which enables us to grasp the workings of the world and develop scientific theories |

Princeton University Press 2009 1 Online-Ressource (272 S.) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Main description: Descartes's works are often treated as a unified, unchanging whole. Machamer and McGuire trace the implications of these changes and others that follow from them, including Descartes's rejection of the method of abstraction as a means of acquiring knowledge, his insistence on the infinitude of God's power, and his claim that human knowledge is limited to that which enables us to grasp the workings of the world and develop scientific theories Descartes, René 1596-1650 (DE-588)118524844 gnd rswk-swf Erkenntnistheorie (DE-588)4070914-0 gnd rswk-swf Kausalität (DE-588)4030102-3 gnd rswk-swf Leib-Seele-Problem (DE-588)4035151-8 gnd rswk-swf Ursache (DE-588)4062163-7 gnd rswk-swf Descartes, René 1596-1650 (DE-588)118524844 p Erkenntnistheorie (DE-588)4070914-0 s Ursache (DE-588)4062163-7 s Kausalität (DE-588)4030102-3 s 1\p DE-604 Leib-Seele-Problem (DE-588)4035151-8 s 2\p DE-604 Machamer, Peter Sonstige oth https://doi.org/10.1515/9781400830435 Verlag Volltext http://www.degruyter.com/search?f_0=isbnissn&q_0=9781400830435&searchTitles=true Verlag Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
