were elders-pilgrims to the Holy Land. Thus, this bag transformed into

This article analyzes the secular stories of the stair towers of St.
Sophia in Kyiv frescoes. The Byzantine character of these paintings has
been claimed in the article on the basis of painting style, as well as the
content of the frescoes stories. The content of these frescoes has nothing
to do with the Old
Rus'
realities. The frescoes scenes of the North and
South towers have been considered in their entirety. The fresco of the
southern tower depicted the Constantinople Hippodrome with a horse
racing, and North Tower
-
circus performances and Gothic games re¬
lated to the celebration of carols that take place in the palace of Con¬
stantinople. Among other persons of the Palace and the Hippodrome on
the frescoes depicted an empress and an emperor with Armenian facial

In the article a critical analysis of the works by
N.
Kondakov on
the history of old
Ruthenian
art is done. In particular, the following

works are analyzed: "Russian antiquities in the monuments of art"
(Issue IV-VI); "Byzantine enamels, collection of A.V. Zvenigorodsky";
"Russian clades" and the article "About the scientific tasks on the his¬
tory of the old
Ruthenian
art".
Of the entire volume of the Old Russian territory the author first
of all stops on Ukrainian monuments, including Kyiv, which empha¬
sized that Kondakov made a qualitative break through in the study of
the St. Sophia in Kyiv. However, there is noted that other monuments
of Kyiv as general Ukraine and also Belarus in the work by Kondakov
were paid very little attention. Therefore it is stated that works by Kon¬
dakov don't highlight Russian art, and only art from the territory of the
nexsisting Russian Empire. The author points to Kondakov and the dis¬
regard for Ukrainian medieval art in the history of Russian art evolution.
Therefore, after work by Kondakov, according to the author, the main
research of the ancient Ukrainian architecture have been works by
Lashkarev. In the context of Byzantine influences the author disproves
the thesis on the impact of Korsun art on the
Ruthenian
one. However,
the works by Kondakov have been generally given high rating.

The article is devoted to the 500-year anniversary of the fall of
Constantinople. The author presents his own analysis of this event and
refutes the false thesis about Byzantium as a downfall state. Causes of
the Byzantium decline have declared unequivocally failed policy of the
West for the Empire. The fall of Constantinople caused significant out¬
flow of Greek cultural figures to the West that spurred there the devel¬
opment of the humanity. Also the article emphasizes the need to
inclusion of Byzantine Studies to the topical field of Ukrainian studies

An attempt to prove the idea that Kyiv
Rus'
reproduced in general
terms the Greek and Byzantine, Platonic and Aristotelian understanding
of politics is made in the article. This view is manifested at least in three
aspects according to the author. The first aspect is the understanding of
the main politics purposes as the true live, and the aspiration for the
weal and the special type of a Christian Saint that was the most appro¬
priate to it. The second aspect is the understanding of "architectonic"
nature of politics as creational activity of hierarchical disposition. The
third aspect is the recognizing of the basic principle of construction of
the hierarchy in christianly reinterpreted justice, which meant the fair
hierarchical distribution of weals and penalties for crimes in Kyiv
Rus'.

Monastery in Grodno. Items have taken by the 8th scientist expedition,
led by museum director Elena Aladova

The study of
archival materials allowed to reveal names of the artists who worked
on the decoration of the Annunciation Cathedral of the St. Bridget
Monastery. Among the others there is mention the name Jacob Tykot-
syno, according to documents of the 19th century, which in
1647
wrote

icons for one of the side altars. The collection of the National Art Mu¬
seum has eight works, probably by this author. Careful restoration, had
been done by Peter Zhurbyey
(1945-2013)
was allowed the save and
put into scientific circulation the striking example of painting of the
mid-17th century, that showed the knowing of Jacob Tykotsyno Flemish
art school, which had been reflected in his works. In particular, in the

works by the master of Tykotsyno have been noted a proximity to the
works by such masters as Gerard Seghers
(1591-1651).
