adam_text | SUMMARY
This book tells the story of British soldiers who spent time in Poland during
the Second World War. Their presence there was linkedto their country’s enga-
gement in war with the Third Reich and its allies. Each of the five chapters,
which are based on archival research and analysis of documents, covers a discre-
te, rich aspect of this broad topic.
Chapter I analyses the Polish-British alliance, which was put to a difficult
test by the Third Reich’s attack on Poland on 1 September shortly after being
signed on 26 August 1939. The British Military Mission, headed by General
Adrian Carton de Wiart, opened only a few days before the outbreak of the war.
Its assignments revolved around Polish-British military cooperation in the even-
tuality of war. Most of them could not, however, be completed during the Polish
campaign of September 1939. Still, the Britons in the mission came to witness
the September 1939 events in Poland and wrote about them abundantly in their
reports and their official correspondence with the British authorities, and some
of them later in memoirs. Their fortunes and their actions showed that there was
a real possibility of putting the Polish-British alliance into effect in the first
month of the war. The book presents the circumstances of the creation of the
mission and its goals and activities in Poland, as well as the outcomes of these
activities. Surviving British primary sources also provide extensive information
about Poland’s military situation and the principal factors that led to its defeat by
the Third Reich. They reflect the Britons’ experiences, opinions and observa-
tions about the actions and decisions of the Polish General Staff at key junctures
in the Polish campaign. Despite its defeat, Poland continued to cooperate milita-
rily with Great Britain, as had been foreseen in their alliance, when the Polish
government went into exile in France and later Britain.
Chapter II covers the period of the war’s spread to northern and western Eu-
rope and the Allies’ military defeat in 1940. Tens of thousands of British troops
were captured by the Germans, and thousands of them were held in German
439
prisoner-of-war camps in the Polish territories. As the war continued, new gro-
ups of prisoners of war of various nationalities arrived in the oflags, stalags, and
airmen’sand internment camps. The focus here is on the conditions of their capti-
vity and the distribution and types of German camps for British men in uniform
in the Polish lands. This chapter also analyses the prisoners’ conspiratorial enga-
gement, and their living conditions and daily lives. It discusses the Polish and
British intelligence services’ knowledge of the Britons’ situation in the camps.
The information gathered by the Union of Armed Struggle-Home Army intelli-
gence was relayed to London, to the Commander in Chief’s staff, which then
passed it on to the British. Britain used its intelligence units specializing in pri-
soners of war to make clandestine contact with its men in German captivity.
They developed a system of clandestine communications. This chapter discusses
some aspects of this system, methods used to gather information about the priso-
ners and attempts to make contact with the Britons in German prisoner-of-war
camps.
Chapter III discusses the forms of assistance the British soldiers received
from the Polish Underground State and other Polish underground organizations
outside it. Every year, at least a few dozen British prisoners of war escaped from
German captivity and attempted to leave the German occupation zone. Most
were recaptured, interrogated and sent back to the camps. This was the case with
the unsuccessful escape of Wing Commander Douglas Robert Stewart Bader,
one of the best-known British airmen, with a group of other prisoners of Stalag
VIIIB Lamsdorf (Łambinowice). Other breakouts were successful, and some of
the men encountered Poles who were willing to help them. Those prisoners who
made contact with the Polish resistance had the greatest chances of remaining at
large. They were assigned helpers, supplied civilian clothing, briefed on the li-
ving conditions under the occupation and given forged documents. This chapter
tells of different getaway methods, types of assistance from the Poles and rela-
tions between the British soldiers and the Polish population. It also examines the
most important instance of organized help for British soldiers, Operation ‘Dor-
sze’, ‘Cods’. Launched by the Polish Underground State, it included actions in
Poland, as well as other parts of occupied Europe, to assist British soldiers who
had escaped German prisoner-of-war camps and Allied airmen who had been
shot down over Poland. Surviving documents illustrate the cooperation between
the Polish and British intelligence services. Department VI of the General Staff
and the Special Operations Executive (SOE) were in regular contact on this
issue, and the MI6 and MI9 also maintained an interest in it. This chapter also
440
fl
describes the methods that were used to evacuate British soldiers from occupied
Poland to Britain and to organize smuggling routes. Every smuggling operation
was a vast enterprise, organizationally and logistically.
Chapter IV covers the cases of British soldiers who were unable to leave
occupied Poland. Some of them joined the Polish underground and fought the
Germans, volunteered for Polish partisan units or fought in the Warsaw Upri-
sing, and one man worked for Polish intelligence. British military authorities
allowed its soldiers to join Polish armed units as volunteers and to take part in
fighting the Germans in Poland, which both Polish and British documents attest
to. British supply drops for the Polish Underground State were an important
manifestation of the Polish-British alliance. Some of the airplanes were shot
down or damaged, and their pilots had to save themselves with parachutes. The
book tells some of their stories of being found by the Home Army or by local
people and taking shelter with partisan units. There were very many different
situations, and all show, most significantly, the Polish and British soldiers’ co-
operation, courage and common cause of fighting against the German invaders.
Chapter V covers British special operations in Poland in 1944-1945. They
were launched at a time when Poland’s post-war future was being decided, and
when crucial choices were being made in both the Polish Underground State and
in the Polish government as well as the military authorities in exile about the
ways, forms and possibilities of making Poland a sovereign state again. There is
information here about British airmen’s participation in air operations during
and after the Warsaw Uprising. It includes an analysis of Operation ‘Wildhom’,
Polish code name ‘Most’, which consisted of operations involving landing pla-
nes in occupied Poland to deliver people and equipment and bring out Polish
politicians and couriers. Three such flights, all with British pilots, made it to
Poland, The last part of this chapter discusses the preparations and expedition to
Poland in 1944 of two British military missions. The first, co-organized with the
Americans and the Soviet military authorities, was the British-American Milita-
ry Mission commanded by Colonel Terence Robert Beaumont Sanders. Its target
was the base in Blizna, where the Germans were testing V-2 rockets and V-l
bombs. The mission arrived at Blizna just after it had been liberated, and produ-
ced two reports. The first discussed the political and social situation in the terri-
tories controlled by the Lublin Communists and the second was a military analy-
sis of the Blizna base and the V-l and V-2. Both reports provided detailed infor-
mation about the situation in the Polish territories being liberated from the Ger-
mans and coming under Red Army domination. The second mission, code name
441
‘Freston’,was sent to Poland in December 1944. SOE documents give plenty of
information about the preparations of the mission. The data and evaluations by
the mission’s commander and its members offer interesting analyses of the po-
litical situation in Poland in late 1944-early 1945. The SOE was preparing three
more such missions, which would be led by the ‘Freston’ commander. But the
military and political situation in the Polish lands, which became the Soviet ar-
my’s theatre of operations, prevented them from being executed. Apart from the
SOE documents, the author studied reports by British soldiers who remained in
Poland in the last stages of the war and were active in the Polish underground,
which discuss the situation immediately after the defeat of the Germans, in the
early phase of the Communists’ organization of a new government. Those Bri-
tons who were captured and disarmed by the NKVD or Red Army units were
interrogated and imprisoned, and eventually sent back home. Another group,
British soldiers coming out of liberated prisoner-of-war camps and awaiting re-
patriation to Great Britain, also witnessed the 1945 events in Poland.
The book is based on a broad range of British and Polish primary sources. It
also uses some German documents to add to that information or to corroborate
details. Earlier research by British and Polish historians enabled the author to
learn about the existence of many archival items, to verify sources and to inter-
pret and fill in the details of some of the issues discussed here. The author also
uses many new sources on unknown or little-researched aspects of Polish-Bri-
tish military cooperation in occupied Poland during the Second World War.
