OF EDUCATION OF ADULTS
Summary
Oswiata Dorosiych [The Education of Adults] was an important pedagogical
magazine addressed to both theoreticians and practicians dealing with education of
grown-up people. It was issued from 1957 until 1990, that is for 34 years. Although -
like other magazines at that time — it realized the political assumptions of the then
authorities, it did play a significant role in the environment of professionals working
with adults or those preparing for the profession. It replaced, to an extent, a regular
course-book on andragogy, containing both basic theoretical problems and achieve-
ments of the educational practice. The most outstanding Polish and foreign authors
of the day, who dealt with andragogy, presented their theoretical concepts in its
columns. The magazine made it possible to get acquainted with accomplishments of
the discipline, mainly in socialist countries, but also those in the USA and in
Western Europe.
The aim of that magazine was to promote the assumptions and directions of the
socialist educational policy, to popularize the theoretical and empirical output of
andragogy, as well as that of related disciplines which were connected with it. The
columns of the periodical were used to exchange didactic-rearing experience through
presentation of achievements of teachers of adults and concrete individual centres
providing education to adult population. The process of educating and perfecting
educators in the sphere of andragogy was supported, readers were acquainted with
the progress and development of education of grown-up people abroad.
The problem areas raised in the columns of The Education of Adults during the 34
years of its existence were closely related to the development of the adult human
being at different stages of their lives, primarily, through presenting adults’
participation in formal and outside-formal educational institutions. The articles
published in the columns of the magazine were devoted to the theoretical and
practical output in the field of education of adults and presented the rich literature
of the subject in bibliographical elaborations. Apart from this, reports on important
scientific events, such as conferences and scientific meetings, were given and also
information connected with the current educational policy was provided.
Analyzing the themes of all the issues in individual years, it can unambiguously
be concluded that the magazine was dominated by the problem area related to
formal education. This means that teaching the illiterate, initial education of adults,
primary education, as well as that on the level of secondary comprehensive and

vocational school were analyzed. The selection of problems was tightly linked to the
current educational policy of the Polish state.
In the first chapter, the beginnings of the magazine were presented, together with
the sections which were established throughout the time of its issuing. I recon-
structed the workings of the Editorial Committee and its composition. I also brought
closer the profiles of the editors-in-chief and presidents of the editorial committees.
The second chapter deals with the problem area taken up in the columns of the
periodical. I limited myself in it to presentation of discussions carried out on the
subject of theoretical foundations of andragogy, which were dealt with from the
beginning of the magazine, as well as the basic notional categories, that is the adult
learner and rearing a grown-up person.
The next chapter is devoted to formal and outside-formal education. I presented
these forms of educating, which are very rarely mentioned today, taking into account
the general, relatively high level of education of Polish society in comparison with
the previous times. They include illiteracy, initial education of adults and in-prison
school system. As regards the forms of outside-school education I concentrated solely
on the folk university, whose activity was only too infrequently presented in the
columns of the magazine; still, the relevant material — mainly supplied by
practicians-educators proves very interesting.
The monograph is concluded with a part concerning the cooperation between the
editorial staff and readers. I presented varied forms of this cooperation — especially
focusing on competitions. On the basis of the materials collected by the editorial
personnel and popularized in the magazine, I undertook to show the usefulness of
the periodical for teachers and educational workers.
The Education of Adults provides an interesting source to study the history of
education. It shows problems which were dominant in concrete individual periods
and the influence of ideological assumptions of the ruling party and successive
governments on the problem areas taken up in the columns of the magazine. It also
reveals how the sociopolitical situation in the second half of the previous century
determined the dealing with given theoretical and practical questions in this
magazine.
