Landscape, archeology, time and nature in Hajek’s Chronicle
This paper deals with approximately the first 250 pages of the Czech Chronicle prior to
the year 1000. This section is dominated by semi-legendary tales that were evidently com-
posed and compiled for the most part from “pieces of oral tradition. The actual location
where Hajek was based, the Tetin vicarage, is mythical in its own way. His view of the
village green was overshadowed by an ancient mound and from a nearby rock above the
river he looked out over another two enormous ancient forts. The gorge behind the vic-
arage led to a karst gulley where some twenty caves and several archeological sites have
now been found.
The Central European and general northern Renaissance does not only represent a re-
turn to the heritage of antiquity, but also to local mythical times. This can clearly be seen,
for example, in the English chronicles and descriptions of English ancient history, such as
the “Hajekesque” Anglia Historia by Polydore Vergil (1st edition 1534) and the histories of
William Warner and Edmund Spencer (Faerie Queene, Book II). Within this context the
Czech Chronicle ranks among similar European Renaissance works.
The actual text of the first part of the Chronicle presents a mixture of detailed, often
highly erudite, but elsewhere incorrect fragments of information, e.g. on ore mining, lo-
calizing sources and archeological sites, which form the basis for some story that is more
or less contrived or influenced by a now unknown tradition. We have found in experiments
with students that reading Hajek s Chronicle in a specific landscape is a different, more
profound experience than reading in a library, where other historical works are also pres-
ent. Likewise, the Chronicle was obviously written and for many centuries read with a real
location “in view . Hajek s programme was apparently straightforward, but as the test of
history has shown, it was strong and supportive: to show that the Czechs have a long and
rich history and that they live in a remarkable land.

Anthroponyms in Hajek’s Czech Chronicle
The main topic dealt with by the author in this article is the extent to which Czech an-
throponyms occurring in Hajek s Czech Chronicle correspond with the naming habits of
the period to which they are ascribed. Attention is paid especially to 1) the confrontation
of anthroponyms occurring in Hajek s chronicle with names historically documented from
the particular period and 2) the comparison of Hajek s anthroponyms with authentic his-
torically documented Old Czech anthroponyms. The research proved that Hajek, when
describing the particular periods, used authentic Old Czech names (Choteslav) or other
Slavonic names (Polish Dolebor) that served as a model for creating fictional names, thus
moving authentic Old Czech anthroponyms far away to the past. The ancient character of
names in Hajek s chronicle was especially evoked by the bases of anthroponyms, which
were only seldom used or not used at all in Czech (Horboj, Bloboj).

Hajek’s Chronicle and Old Czech Annals
According to the specialist literature, the many sources behind Hajek s Czech Chronicle
include chronicles from a set entitled Old Czech Annals, but it has never been precisely
determined which of the more than thirty surviving manuscripts are involved. Based on
a sample of sixteen reports on events during the Hussite wars appearing in Hajeks Chron-
icle and in the Old Czech Annals, we have attempted to establish the source text. We have
not found the direct source, but we find most (thirteen) of the identical reports in text R,
known as Vratislavsky, written between 1515 and 1535. Identification of the source text
was complicated by the possibility that it had not actually been preserved or that Vaclav
Hajek used more than one text from the Old Czech Annals in his work. The work was also
influenced by the fact that Hajek was an unusually creative individual who can be presumed
to have not accepted the sources automatically, but to have adapted and recreated their
language and contents.

On foreign geographical names in Czech Chronicle
by Vaclav Hajek of Libocany
Hajek’s Chronicle is rich in examples of the creation and usage of numerous proper names.
The names of foreign geographical objects denoting the horizons of knowledge provides
testimony of the range of interests and needs of the community of Czech language speakers
in the 16th century with regard to communication with neighbouring and other commu-
nities. The repertoire of these names, as well as the stabilization and differentness of their
forms can be seen to some extent as a documentation of the development of Czech ex-
onymy. However, they are also an integral part of the work itself, its individual creative
and stylistic features and the intentions involved.

Secondary episodic narrations in Hajek’s Chronicle
The article follows the remarks made by Jaroslav Kolar and extends the hypothesis that
the work of Hajek z Libocan is one of a coherent conception supported by an authorial in-
tent, based on the typology and role of the incidental episodic narrations (narace) found
in the Czech Chronicle, which do not only demonstrate the purpose and integrity of the
work as a piece of literature, but also indicate the unique consideration Hajek showed for
his (ideal) reader.

Hajek’s depiction of the Hussite era
1
The Czech Chronicle, which was written by Catholic priest Vaclav Hajek and which was
printed in 1541, ranks among not only the basic texts of Czech historiography, but also
Czech literature as a whole. In a single huge volume it embraced Czech history from an-
cient times until the beginning of the author s present age. Hajek, influenced by Renais-
RESUME 229
sance humanism, intentionally crossed the borders of the mere “chronicle” although he
preserved its formal attributes and made a dynamic step towards the genre of “history”
Symptomatic was some fictionalization of historic records, which blended reality with fic-
tion, the attractiveness of stories, and also numerous fictional monologues and dialogues,
lending the story its dramatic character. As the author came closer to his present, the fic-
tional events in his text decreased.
2
This also applies to some extent to the Hussite era, which the author described relying
mainly upon the Hussite Chronicle of Lawrence of Brezova and the Old Annals of Bo-
hemia. Both these sources were obviously written from the Hussite point of view, hence
he amended this tendency. His opinion was not stark anti-Hussite, as incorrectly stated in
older Czech academic works. In his work, Hajek differentiated the Hussites. He strongly
condemned the radical movements (Taborits, Orphans, followers of Prague preacher Jan
Zelivsky), which in many fundamental matters left the traditions of the Roman church,
but he showed obvious sympathy with the restrained Hussites, as well as with Jan Hus.
Hence he appreciated the defeat of the radicals at the Battle of Lipany and the declaration
of the Compactata, i.e. agreements, through which the Council of Basel reunited the Hus-
sites with the Roman church. Nevertheless, the chronicler understood the Compactata in
the broader sense, typical for the Czech environment, and he included them with the agree-
ments with Emperor Sigismund of Luxembourg concluded 1435-1436. Through the prism
of the effectiveness of the Compactata (Hajek s Chronicle completely ignores the fact that
the Pope revoked them in 1462), he interpreted the events in the second half of the 15th cen-
tury, namely the activities of the “Hussite” king George of Podebrady and of Jan Rokycana,
leader of the Calixtine church. Hajek considered the religious peace of Kutna Hora, con-
cluded in March 1485 between Calixtines and Catholics, as one of the pillars of Czech
state stability.
3
The author wrote the Hussite parts of the Czech Chronicle with a strong tendency to
update them, reacting to the struggle after 1520, aimed at changing the character of the
Calixtine church, which was decisive, whether the church preserved his opinion of the
Compactata, or became fully open to Protestantism. In this struggle Hajek unambiguously
supported the traditionalists and profiled himself as an opponent of Lutheranism, the Unity
of Brethen, and all of the more radical and reformation movements. His story concerning
the events in the 15th century is in many aspects allegorical, warning against the penetration
of radical reformation principles into Czech religious relationships. The opposition against
Lutheranism was another supporting element in Hajek s distinctively Czech and anti-Ger-
man beliefs.
4
The analysis of Hussitism performed in Czech Chronicle confirmed the findings of
Jifi Pesek, Bohdan Zilynsky, Zdenek Benes, and other authors, according of which Hajek
advocated the principles of the Czech estates, especially regarding the interests of royal
towns such as Prague. With regard to religion, Hajek seems to be a restrained Catholic,
aware of the need for peaceful coexistence between both Catholic and Utraquistic po-
pulations, and he was afraid of all demonstrations of extremism. He believed the way to
STUDIA HAGECIANA I — NA OKRAJ KRONIKY CESKÉ
preserve the integrity of Czech society and the Czech Kingdom in turbulent times at the
beginning of modern era was to preserve harmony and order. This was the main reason
his crucial work appealed both to Catholic and Calixtine audiences, even though he was
presenting such a controversial and delicate problem as Hussitism.

“So as not to digress from the order of the Chronicle and not to tell
ridiculous tales, I shall tell you a little something” The grotesque level
in Hájek s Czech Chronicle
This paper attempts to distinguish a comic level within Hájek s Czech Chronicle. Based
on excerpts from anecdotal inserts, satirical and ironic passages and commentaries it finds
an ongoing level of flat grotesquerie, not actually containing vulgarisms or scatological
passages, but often making use of subtle alterations of models, ludic puns on names and
rythmic punchlines. Hájek used the comic both to make evaluative comments on moral
shortcomings in particular and to stylistically enhance his chronicle narrative.

The German translation of Hájek s Czech Chronicle by Johann Sandel
in the context of selected German versions of older historiographical
works from the Czech lands
This paper deals with selected aspects of the German translation of Václav Hájek of Li-
bocany s Czech Chronicle by Johann Sandel and first published between 1596 and 1598.
Attention is particularly focused on the author s and translator s treatment of national-lin-
guistic and denominational matters, while the selective comparison includes not only
Hájek s Chronicle, but also older chronicle works from the Czech lands also available in
translated versions. It turns out that religious subjects are much more vividly portrayed in
Hájek s Chronicle and its translation, and at this level the translation indicates several adap-
tations based on the differing denominational standpoints of the author and the translator.

Several notes on the relations between Hájek s Czech Chronicle
and Beckovsky s Poselkyné (Messenger of Old Czech Tales)
This paper compares two important Czech chronicles separated by over 150 years. The
author of this paper has focused his main attention on several selected subjects, particularly
on the issue of the importance of the church and ecclesiastical orders in the views of both
chroniclers and the differences between both texts in their views of temporal patrons, in
their relations to Hussitism, in their different evaluations of the government of selected
monarchs, their view of patriotism, current affairs in the texts and the like. Beckovsky s
Messenger of Old Czech Tales is a notable text, which amongst other things provides
testimony of the interest at the end of the 17th and in the 18th century in Hájek s Czech
Chronicle, as well as being a notable source on the changes in worldview and national his-
tory that took place between the mid-16th century and the turn of the 17th and 18th cen-
turies. Then in the substantially different sociocultural circumstances of the turn of the

18th and 19th centuries and the first half of the 19th century both chronicles were involved
in the supposed miracle of the Czech National Revival as favourite reading matter among
the populace.

Jirasek’s Hajek - An intertextual view
In his Old Czech Legends (1st edition 1894) Alois Jirasek drew on the older chronicles in-
cluding to a large extent Hajek’s Czech Chronicle (1541), making use of both text and con-
tent, and altering both the language and the motifs of the passages adopted. The amend-
ments to the motifs were made in view of the young readership (with the omission of motifs
that might have expressed disrespect for the figures in national mythology) and by literary
usage in the latter half of the 19th century (with the addition of passages describing land-
scapes or psychological insights into the actions of the characters). The linguistic alter-
ations were made primarily at the phonological and morphological levels, while the word
order and lexical units were for the most part retained. Jirasek’s treatment of Czech legends
de facto superseded Hajek’s Chronicle as the primary representation of the national myth.
Ondrej Koupil
Hajek as linguistic authority
This study deals with the reception of Hajek’s Czech Chronicle as a text that acted as a lin-
guistic authority, a model that long stood in second place behind the Bible in the hierarchy
of prestige Czech texts. Probes extending from the 16th century to the beginning of the
21st century chart the gradual retreat of Hajek’s text from this position and from the posi-
tion of a venerable linguistic heirloom. Hajek’s linguistic authority indeed waned with time,
just like his historical authority. The relations between Hajek’s individual spheres of
authority are diagramatically set out in Section 7. Section 8. raises more general questions
on the importance of period linguistic authorities for handling and periodicizing linguistic
and literary history, appealing for an examination of the linguistic features of Czech
Chronicle, precisely because it was a much-read and esteemed Czech text for many cen-
turies, practically and theoretically considered to be an important linguistic model.
