Beschreibung:In the I 980s, ED! was the subject of many conferences and articles where its potential for efficiency enhancement within the whole economy and the strategic value for the pioneering adopters were praised. After a decade of active promotion, however, the diffusion progress has not fulfilled the expectations. Common explanations hint at technical difficulties, unclear standardisation processes, m1ssmg strategic awareness within the affected industry, and a less-than-obvious pay-off for the investment into electronic links. The author takes a different position. He approaches the state of ED! diffusion in four industry case studies with a broad theoretical basis, including efficiency aspects, the power-dependence relationships between companies on both sides of the ED! link, and the specific role of network and message compatibility for the diffusion of telecommunication based innovations like ED!. Combining the theoretical threads of diffusion of innovations theory, transaction cost theory, and power-dependence theory, the author builds an eclectic theoretical framework specifying the 'political economy' of the value chain where ED! happens to diffuse
