Beschreibung:In a lecture delivered to the Rheinisch-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften in Düsseldorf in March 1970 Professor Franz Broich, Chairman of the Management Board of Chemische Werke Hüls AG, Marl, gave a survey of the present situation and the development of petrochemistry. It is no longer coal and coke oven by-products which supply the primary chemicals (at present 93 Ofo) for modern chemistry but mineral oil and natural gas. This applies in particular to ethylene, as the most important basic material, which is, for the most part, recovered from light naphtha of the refineries. The question arises wh ether the demand for petrol and fuel oil which has hitherto determined the extension of the refineries will rise to the same extent as the requirements of chemical industry. With an assumed growth rate of chemie al industry in Western Europe of 8 Ofo p.a. in the seventies, the ethylene requirements of the said economic area may be expected to increase from 5.2 million tons in 1970 to 13.2 million tons by 1980
