Beschreibung:Cooperative research ventures between some oceanographic institutions and nations today frequently start with a series of official meetings, councils, and so forth, followed by several years of research, and finally a group of papers emerging in various technical journals. The study of the Red Sea is an exception to this procedure. It is a good example of the kind of spontaneous cooperation that can occur when individual scientists get excited about a unique problem and work together exchanging samples and data and publishing their final results in a single volume. The problem of the hot holes of the Red Sea required real teamwork from scientists of many different disciplines as well as different nationalities new ones, such as a telemetering pinger for getting a continuous temperature profile and a thermoprobe accurate to 0.005°C. When the R. V. CHAIN returned home, there were requests from many laboratories around the world for sediment samples to analyze. These requests were filled insofar as was possible without exhausting all available sample. Although the hot brine and heavy metal deposits cover an area of less than 100 square miles, they are clearly part of a larger geological scheme. The world-wide interest in rift valleys and sea floor spreading with their attendant hydrothermal and
