John Arbuthnot, from the preface to his translation of Huygens's "De Ratiociniis in Ludo Alooe". Prompted by an awareness of the importance of Bayesian ideas in modern statistical theory and practice, I decided some years ago to undertake a study of the development and growth of such ideas. At the time it seemed appropriate to begin such an investigation with an examination of Bayes's Essay towards solving a problem in the doctrine of chances and Laplace's Theorie analytique des probabilites, and then to pass swiftly on to a brief consideration of other nineteenth century works before turning to what would be the main topic of the treatise, videlicet the rise of Bayesian statis tics from the 1950's to the present day. It soon became apparent, however, that the amount of Bayesian work published was such that a thorough investigation of the topic up to the 1980's would require several volumes - and also run the risk of incurring the wrath of extant authors whose writings would no doubt be misrepre sented, or at least be so described. It seemed wise, therefore, to restrict the period and the subject under study in some way, and I decided to con centrate my attention on inverse probability from Thomas Bayes to Karl Pearson |

Dale New York, NY Springer US 1991 1 Online-Ressource txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier Studies in the History of Mathematics and Physical Sciences 16 0172-570X It is thought as necessary to write a Preface before a Book, as it is judged civil, when you invite a Friend to Dinner, to proffer him a Glass of Hock beforehand for a Whet. It seemed wise, therefore, to restrict the period and the subject under study in some way, and I decided to con centrate my attention on inverse probability from Thomas Bayes to Karl Pearson Geschichte 1701-1836 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1761-1936 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte gnd rswk-swf Statistics Distribution (Probability theory) Statistics, general Probability Theory and Stochastic Processes Statistik A-posteriori-Wahrscheinlichkeit (DE-588)4273821-0 gnd rswk-swf Bayes-Entscheidungstheorie (DE-588)4144220-9 gnd rswk-swf Inverses Problem (DE-588)4125161-1 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 gnd rswk-swf Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie (DE-588)4079013-7 gnd rswk-swf Entscheidungstheorie (DE-588)4138606-1 gnd rswk-swf Wahrscheinlichkeit (DE-588)4137007-7 gnd rswk-swf Wahrscheinlichkeitstheorie (DE-588)4079013-7 s Geschichte (DE-588)4020517-4 s 1\p DE-604 Bayes-Entscheidungstheorie (DE-588)4144220-9 s Geschichte 1701-1836 z 2\p DE-604 A-posteriori-Wahrscheinlichkeit (DE-588)4273821-0 s Geschichte 1761-1936 z 3\p DE-604 Geschichte z 4\p DE-604 5\p DE-604 6\p DE-604 Entscheidungstheorie (DE-588)4138606-1 s 7\p DE-604 Wahrscheinlichkeit (DE-588)4137007-7 s 8\p DE-604 Inverses Problem (DE-588)4125161-1 s 9\p DE-604 https://doi.org/10.1007/978-1-4684-0415-9 Verlag Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 5\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 6\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 7\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 8\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 9\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
