Beschreibung: | Jeremy Gray and Robin Wilson Over the past twenty years The Mathematical Intelligencer has put before a general mathematical audience a variety of articles that are by turns exciting, important, diverting, fun, profound, and surprising. Reading these articles again has given us insights into what animates mathematicians as they shared their enthusiasm with non-specialists, including experts in fields other than their own. One passion that they share is for hard, significant problems- and discovering their solutions. The Intelligencer has carried a considerable number of articles that report on such breakthroughs as Faltings' affirmative answer to the Morden conjecture (for which he won a Fields Medal in 1986), Vaughan Jones' work on knots (part of the work that earned him a Fields Medal in 1990), the solution of the Bieberbach conjecture, and progress in the fast-moving area of work on hyperbolic threemanifolds, solutions, instantons, and string theory. Another passion is for the sheer joy of doing mathematics. Can you imagine Boy's surface or think geometrically about differential equations? Calculating, whether in algebra, analysis, combinatorics, or geometry, is not just a mathematician's bread and butter; it has its own appeal and excitement, and some of that is conveyed in these pages |
