SUMMARY
CONTEXTS OF THE SLOVAK MODERN SCHOOL
The Slovak Modern School is an established term in literary history,
used for Modernist literary works written at the turn of the 19th and
20th centuries. Authors of the Slovak Modern School were influenced
by
Neo
-Romanticism and Symbolism, partially also by Impressionism
and to some extent by Decadence. Since they did not have intensive
personal contacts, they did not create a separate group with their own
manifesto, as was common in other European literatures. However,
they shared themes and poetics. They mostly wrote about emotions,
moods and intellectual crises; about losses, failures, disappointments
and restlessness.
First signals of the new poetics in Slovak literature appeared before
1900.
The Slovak Modern School reached its climax between
1905
and
1912.
[This period was marked by two Modernist collections of verse,
Janko Jesenský s Verše
(Verses, published in
1905),
and Ivan Kraskos
collection with the identical name (published in
1912)]
Aftermaths
of Modernism appeared in the
1920s,
with Neo-Symbolism in poetry
and
fi
n
de siècle
moods and attitudes in prose.
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, modernity was a key no¬
tion for artistic self-definition. It was connected to the ideas of novelty
and change. Modern, contemporary trends were extremely important.
Modernism can be understood as a period, an ideology, a style or a set
of stylistic signs, but it cannot be defined exclusively through formal
and aesthetic categories. Instead, research must include linguistic, so¬
cial and sociological contexts.
The notion of the Slovak Modern School did not originate at the
332
turn of the 19th and 20th centuries but in the
1930s
when this pe¬
riod began to be researched. The terminology developed gradually:
different notions, such as Modernism,
Mladé Slovensko
(Young Slo¬
vakia) and
Krasko
s
School (in honour of the most important poet of
the School, Ivan
Krasko)
were used. The concept of
Mladé Sloven¬
sko
(Young Slovakia) referred to a Polish movement
Młoda Polska.
It also included political efforts. In the
1940s,
Slovak Structuralists
(for example,
Mikuláš Bakoš
and
Ján Brezina)
used the term Krasko s
School, but it only referred to the most important figure of the School.
A literary historian
Michal Gáfrik
was the first person to discuss terms
modern
-
modernity
-
Modernism in the Slovak context, considering
the Slovak Modern School. He introduced the notion of the Slovak
Modern School; and it has been used since the
1960s.
It did not con¬
tain the element of evaluation. Instead, it emphasized approaches of
literary history and connections with similar situations and contexts
in other national literatures.
Six key authors of the Slovak Modern School were: Ivan
Krasko
(real name
Ján
Botto,
1876 - 1958),
Janko Jesenský
(1874 - 1945),
Ivan
Gall (real name
Ján
Halla,
1885 - 1955),
František Votruba
(pen
name
Andrej Klas,
1880 -1953),
Ľudmila Groeblová
(1884 - 1968)
and Vladimír
Roy (1885 - 1936).
Their works are valid manifestations
of Modernist aesthetic tendencies in Slovak literature. Modern per¬
ception of life and corresponding poetics were also present in works
by other writers, such as Vladimir
Húrban
-Vladimírov
(pen name
VHV,
1884 - 1950),
Vladimír Hurban-Svetozárov
(pen name
VHS,
1883 - 1949),
Martin
Rázus
(1888 - 1937),
Samo
Cambei
(pen name
Kosorkin,
1882 - 1935),
Juraj Slávik
(pen name
Neresnický,
1890 -
1969)
and
Štefan Krčméry
(1892 - 1955).
Slovak Modernism also
had some predecessors, such as
Ľudmila Podjavorinská
(real name
Ľudmila Riznerová,
1872 - 1951),
the first female author in Slovakia
who published a collection of verse
Z vesny života
(From Spring of
the Young Age,
1895).
Modernist tendencies were also noticeable in
333
works of marginal authors, such as
Ján
Uram
(pen name Horin,
1883
- 1956)
and Ivan
Lüge
(pen name
Lysecký,
1886 - 1918).
Even though the Slovak Modern School only included one genera¬
tion (most writers were born in the 1880s), Modernist emotions can
also be found in works of older writers, for example in Timravas fic¬
tion (real name
Božena Slančíková,
1867 - 1951).
Her stories, written
between 1890s and
1920s,
focused on village intelligentsia, especially
on emotions of female characters with some autobiographical ele¬
ments.
The Slovak Modern School developed in the era that was marked by
radical changes in Slovakia. Even though Hungary at the beginning of
the 20th century was less developed than the western part of the mo¬
narchy, after the
Ausgleich (1867)
it tried to catch up with Austria in
terms of economy and civilization progress. The absence of moderni¬
sation in Slovakia (represented by sixteen or eighteen counties of the
Upper Hungary where Slovaks created a compact national unit) was
noticeable. Slow or belated processes of modernisation were caused by
various facts: in politics by passivity and no differentiation of political
programmes; in economy by selective industrialization of the Hunga¬
rian part of the monarchy and by predominantly agrarian character
of Slovakia; and in social structure by disharmonious coexistence of
old post-feudal classes and new rising social strata. Modernity in Slo¬
vakia, instead of replacing traditions, only added some new elements
to them. Other aspects that caused stagnation were: underdeveloped
urbanization, traditional and conservative attitudes, as well as the role
of religious denominations and religion in Slovakia. In spite of these
facts, two million Slovaks experienced changes related to moderniza¬
tion processes at the beginning of the 20th century. In political life it
meant more active and differentiated political movements reflecting
real plurality of social interests; in economy the development of in¬
dustry and finance, as well as the presence of Slovak entrepreneurs and
334
investors; in social structure new criteria that guaranteed professional
attitude, as well as the emphasis on qualification and education.
Along with these progressive tendencies, Slovak milieu witnessed
processes that slowed down the development. Among the most sig¬
nificant factors were: natural assimilation connected to the altered
economic situation and forced magyarization as a state programme
designed to create a homogenous national state. The national oppres¬
sion had an impact on all spheres of social life. Systematic magyari¬
zation
-
a specific aspect of modernization processes in Hungary
-
caused that Slovak society lacked intelligentsia and middle classes.
Adhering to the Slovak nation was an obstacle in climbing the social
ladder. Gradual weakening of higher and middle classes, however,
strengthened nationalism among non-Hungarian nations, and also
facilitated Slovak national emancipation.
The monograph Contexts of the Slovak Modern School is related to
the book
Hľadanie moderny
(Looking for the Modern School) by the
same author from
2009.
In both works, Modernist literature from the
turn of the 19th and 20th centuries is perceived in broader contexts.
In this book, we focus on literary life at the era; on the profile of the
writers; as well as on particular themes and genres. We understand the
context as a crucial category in order to understand texts. The inten¬
tion of the book is to show how extrinsic and extra-literary conditions,
circumstances, tensions and dilemmas influenced arts. Within this
framework, we document, analyse and interpret selected problems
and works by respective authors, wishing to show how Modernist po¬
etry and fiction got established in Slovak literature at the beginning of
the 20th century.
The monograph consists of fifteen chapters divided into four parts
representing four contexts: literary context, context of authors, the¬
matic context and context of genres.
335
The part Literary context is introduced by a chapter
Slovenské
li¬
terárne časopisy
1898 - 1918
(Slovak Literary Periodicals between
1898
and
1918)
which examines how Modernist tendencies were re¬
flected in periodicals and how these periodicals facilitated the rise of
Slovak Modernist literature. We researched periodicals
Dennica, Hlas,
Slovenský obzor, Prúdy, Vy
drove
besiedky and Živena.
The chapter
Ženy a ženská otázka v slovenskom kultúrnom a lite¬
rárnom živote na prelome
19.

20.
storočia
(Women and Women s Ques¬
tion in Slovak Cultural and Literary Life at the Turn of the 19th and
20th Centuries) shows that the national ideology was decisive in order
to facilitate the position of female writers. The status of Slovak women s
writers was only established in the last decades of the 19th century,
thanks to Elena
Maróthy-Šoltésová
and
Terézia Vansová.
Activities of
these two female writers, along with their interest in women s question,
created a space for younger female writers who were able to revise their
moderate statements on women s writing
(Ľudmila Podjavorinská),
or
to state their viewpoints more radically
(Hana Gregorova).
However,
both
Podjavorinská
and
Gregorova
are considered marginal writers
from today s perspective. Among female writers from the turn of the
19th and 20th centuries, only works by
B. Slančíková-Timrava
belong
among canonical works of modern Slovak literature.
The chapter
Funkcie a podoby pseudonymov v slovenskej literatúre
na prelome
19.
a
20.
storočia
(Functions and Forms of Pen Names in
Slovak Literature at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries) argues
that pen names openly or latently reflected several problems of the era.
Besides artistic motivations and individual gestures, pen names also
revealed political, ideological, national and social problems of the era,
including magyarization, creating national identity, emancipation of
women, secularization and other agenda. Later, other problems were
in the foreground, such as aesthetic issues (problems of sentiments
and sentimentality), as well as the need to liberate artistic literature
from national representation.
336
The chapter
Slovenská dolnozemská literatúra na prelome
19.
a
20.
storočia
(Slovak Literature in the Lower Lands at the Turn of the 19th
and 20th Centuries) focuses on literature among Slovak colonists in
the Lower Lands of the former Hungary, which means on the literary
production of a compact national enclave. It began to develop when
one part of the nation had separated from the national unit in the
18th century. Slovak community in the Lower Lands was perceived
as a natural, even though a separate part of the Slovak nation. In the
initial period of its development, Slovak literature in the Lower Lands
produced artistic texts with religious, ethical and didactic purposes.
Extra-literary tendencies and motivations later weakened; instead,
aesthetic function became predominant. The notion of a writer from
the Lower Lands developed as the Slovak minority in the Lower Lands
evolved. It contained the information about the territorial origin of
writers, including the geographical distance from Slovakia, but also
the information on his or her otherness, especially in themes. The ar¬
ticle discusses works by
A. Martiš, J. Čajak
and VHV; showing that
the reception of the Slovak literature from the Lower Lands was not
always positive and unequivocal before
1918,
It was partially caused
by the fact that the Slovak national community was divided; that the
interest of the whole nation was preferred; and that functions of lite¬
rature were perceived differently in Slovakia and in the Lower Lands.
The part of the book entitled Context of Authors consists of five
chapters dedicated to particular authors of the Slovak Modern School.
The chapter
Autori na rozhraní
(Authors on the Cusp) examines the
notion of being on the cusp , which means the situation when wri¬
ters represent changing styles. This is perceived as a problem for liter¬
ary research since the two styles can often be in contradiction. The
idea that styles, movements or eras should be clearly defined makes it
impossible to characterize works unequivocally. Authors sometimes
use different poetics in different genres: writing fiction and poetry, an
337
author can be a Realist and a Modernist at the same time. This diver¬
sity in style, form and genre is sometimes considered a sign of looking
for his or her individual writing style, of testing new approaches, or
a part of an individual artistic programme in which shifting from one
literary form or language to another one is significant. Three authors,
Janko Jesenský,
Samo
Cambei-
Kosorkin and Martin
Rázus,
serve us
as an example of this multiple character of literature at the turn of the
19th and 20th centuries.
Peter Bella-Horals work is discussed in the chapter
Να
ceste k mo¬
dernistickej citovosti: básnik okraja Peter Bella-Horal
(On the Path to¬
ward Modernist Sentimentality: Peter Bella-Horal, A Poet from the
Margin). This poet is often referred to as marginal, with very little or
no artistic innovation, as well as with minimal aesthetic and artistic
values. In spite of his position between two generations, his poetry
contained several significant elements of the era and showed poet s
quest for individual expression in the period when literature was
changing.
The chapter Ivan Gall
a rétorická figúra alúzie (Ivan
Gall and Allu¬
sion as a Rhetoric Figure) argues that making allusions to other literary
texts, especially Modernist ones, shows writers inspirations, sources
and influences. It also indicates that authors of the Slovak Modern
School appreciated European context and contemporary trends, and
wished to become a part of them. Allusions in the Slovak Modern
School can be viewed as:
1.
a statement (manifesto) about adhering to
modern philosophical and artistic tendencies, as well as a confirmation
through other text that the author himself of herself is a Modernist;
2.
a play of an educated intellectual with a reader and a test of readers
competence. The nature and range of allusions also indicates the level
of originality of typical, or almost „canonized motives of literary Mo¬
dernism (which can also be found in Slovak Modernist fiction).
The chapter
Literárne pôsobenie Juraja Slávika-Neresnického (Juraj
Slávik-Neresnickfs
Literary Activities) deals with works of a writer
338
who was younger than other representatives of the Slovak Modern
School.
Slávik-Neresnický
began his literary career as a poet but he
was also a fiction writer, journalist, literary critic and translator, espe¬
cially from French literature. His artistic and literary activities were
only a short episode in his further professional career, but this episode
was extremely influential and creative, showing his culture and desire
to remain socially and culturally active.
The chapter
Básnik Štefan Krčméry (Poet Štefan Krčméry)
deals
with poetry of the author who is often referred to as one of a tran¬
sitory generation .
Krčméry s
collection of verse Herbarium can be
perceived as a Modernist work since it uses innuendo, his style is la¬
conic, foot tends to be freer, and poems show the variety of Moder¬
nist moods.
Krčméry
witnesses the drama of modern mankind. He is
able to express sorrow, pain and solitude. He wishes to express things
that cannot be expressed , and to grasp moments. He portrays himself
as a pilgrim and a hermit. As a poet, he is authentic, with a gentle
hint of religious motives. Unlike poets of the Slovak Modern School,
Krčméry
only rarely writes love poetry. He focuses on intellectual and
existential states, especially mortality, as well as on analyzing his own
self. Besides Symbolism, we can notice Romantic inspiration of the
collection.
The part Thematic Context contains four texts. The chapter
Téma
úzkosti v próze Slovenskej moderny
(Theme of Anxiety in Fiction of the
Slovak Modern School) states that even though fear, terror and anxi¬
ety were not main themes of the Slovak Modern School, several texts
(considered Modernist) from the late
1910s
and the early
1920s
dis¬
cuss them. There are two basic approaches to the theme. One of them
is only represented by few texts. Their
sujet
contains scary and horror-
like elements, focusing on phenomena beyond reason, especially on
paranormal, esoteric and mystical manifestations. Another elabora¬
tion of the theme focuses on existential anxiety, on decay and disinte-
339
gration, on uncertainty, lack of norms and identity crisis. Characters
are fragile; they hesitate; they are not sure where they belong; and they
are deeply worried about their own Self. A common feature of both
groups is that the anxiety rises from the tension between activity and
passivity, between harmony and chaos, between ones strong will and
failures, both physical and emotional. Situations of anxiety (the latter
group) were depicted more frequently than horror stories. However,
anxiety in both types of stories resulted mostly from insecurity when
facing something unknown.
The chapter
Snové vízie ako jeden z motívov Slovenskej moderny
(Dreamlike Visions as One of the Motives of the Slovak Modern
School) discusses oneirism, a state when dreams continue as a dream¬
like state while being awake. In Slovak Modernist fiction in the first
two decades of the 20th century, oneirism is present as a Symbolist
motif of dreamlike visions and memories of feverish states and hallu¬
cinations. Modernist Self, disturbed by the loss of ideals, experienced
emptiness, pessimism and the lack of faith. As a result, persons did not
enjoy life, and in states of hallucinations or being out of control, they
dealt with crucial issues of life and death, existence, mankind and God.
Modernist fiction with this theme written between
1907
and
1918
is
composed as a set of fragments and episodes. It analyses situations
in extremis, states of illness and dying, strong emotions and intellec¬
tual crises. These texts are ontological and deal with human existence.
They establish psychological and social-psychological prose in Slovak
literature which Expressionism in the interwar period developed.
The chapter
Téma plesu a bálu v
slovenskej literatúre
(Theme of Ball
and Dance Party in Slovak Literature) shows that these social events
also inspired Slovak literature. These motives have a potential for
broader cultural,
semiotic
and literary analyses and interpretations.
They contain numerous ambivalent features related to social and
historical changes, as well as changes of styles. Balls and dances are
sometimes described realistically, focusing on documentary details.
340
In other cases, they become the basis for describing authentic experi¬
ence. The identification of different ways of depicting balls and dances
in literature can enable us to perceive this formal phenomenon with
established rules in a more structured and subtle manner.
The chapter
Podoby velkoměsta a
malomesta v slovenskej literatúre
na prelome
19.
a
20.
storočia
(Forms of Metropolis and Small Town
in Slovak Literature at the Turn of the 19th and 20th Centuries) deals
with the literary depiction of cities, taking into consideration the his¬
torical development of genres. This approach can show us structural
changes not only in depicting urban spaces, but also characters and
author
s
subject. City as a literary space began to be portrayed in Real¬
ist literature around 1870s. Small towns (mostly Slovak towns) were
considered ours , whereas large towns (Pest,
Buda, Budapest,
Prague,
marginally Vienna) were strange unknown (topographically and
spacially), other (in terms of manners and morals) and different
(linguistically). Both
topoi
(metropolis and small town) point at cul¬
tural, political and historical situation in
Austro
-Hungary during pro¬
cesses of Modernization. However, these stereotypes evolved and dif¬
fered in meanings.
The part Context of Genres discusses two genres
-
short story and
ballad. The chapter
Krátke prozaické žánre v slovenskej literatúre od
druhej polovice
19.
storočia a na prelome storočí
(Short Fiction Genres
in Slovak Literature from the Second Half of the 19th Century and at
the Turn of the Centuries) states that the development of short narra¬
tive forms in Slovak literature in the second half of the
1
9th century
was related to the rise of particular genres. In theory of genres, short
fiction is used as a secondary criterion based on the length of texts.
Short narrative forms are contrasted with classical epic works such as
novels. They are very heterogeneous and thus difficult to define. How¬
ever, Modernist literature preferred small genres, especially novelettes
and short stories with a reduced
sujet.
Instead of linear and chrono-
341
logical development of the story, writers used innuendo and under¬
tones. Fragments were more frequent. Fiction became more subjective
and psychological Inner world of characters, moods and atmosphere
were more elaborated than the plot. Prose was often lyrical, and it used
formal elements and melody of poetry. Shifts between prose and po¬
etry resulted in new genres such as poems in prose. Genres became
more hybrid and heterogeneous. Modernism also brought changes
in narrative strategies
(1st
person narrator, interior monologue and
stream of consciousness).
The chapter
Modernistické
variácie žánru balady
(Modernist Varia¬
tions of Ballad as a Genre) discusses ballads as a frequent lyrical genre
in poetry of the Slovak Modern School. On one side, its presence
means that the author maintained the continuity with Romanticism,
Realism and Parnassianism. On the other side, it proves that Moder¬
nism was syncretic in terms of genres, and that lyrical elements were
emphasized. Traditional elements of meaning, form and function
changed in Modernist ballads. Epic and objective elements were re¬
duced. Instead, Modernist ballads focused on lyrical and subjective
elements, and were syncretic. A new approach led to new motives,
such as pilgrim, path, guilt, punishment and solitude. Several com¬
mon elements of Modernist ballads prove some unity in style which
enables us to perceive them as a separate historical model of the genre.
The monograph Context of the Slovak Modern School is a contribu¬
tion towards current research of Slovak literature at the turn of the
19th and 20th centuries. It focuses on Modernist tendencies in Slovak
cultural and social milieu, as well as on their literary reflection.
