Oglądanie fotografii autorstwa Szpilmana
przypomina czytanie powieści o przemijającym czasie.
Od śmierci fotografa minęło ponad 60 lat, sam artysta być
może nie spodziewał się, że jego fotografie przetrwają tak
długo, a może właśnie wierzył w ich nieśmiertelność
i zachował kadry starego Węgrowa, jako świadectwo
minionego czasu.
Sądzimy, że zaprezentowana w niniejszej
publikacji problematyka stanie się kolejnym krokiem do
lepszego poznania dziejów Węgrowa. Prezentowane
wydawnictwo jest skierowane do szerokiego kręgu
odbiorców. Przede wszystkim pragniemy dotrzeć do tych
czytelników, dla których dzieje własnego regionu, własnej
miejscowościsąpowodem do dumy.
Zdajemy sobie także sprawę, że wciąż można
odkryć nowe fotografie z przeszłości Węgrowa
(szczególnie w zbiorach prywatnych). Dlatego zwracamy
się z prośbą o pomoc do tych czytelników, którzy posiadają
inne zdjęcia by zechcieli się nimi podzielić z innymi
i udostępnili je do wykorzystania w kolejnej publikacji
dotyczącej bogatej historii miasta.

This album is based on a collection of photographs
and postcards took by a photographer Alter Szpilman that
were found in The August Cieszkowski Public Library of
Wegrow, photographer's family private collection and
private albums belonging to the inhabitants of Wegrow.
The main idea that authors had in mind selecting these
particular pieces was to bring back the forgotten Wegrow՝ s
photographer and most importantly from the point ofview
of the local historians, the views of an early 20th century
Wegrow and images of people involved in the past of this
town.
Photographs from the past included in this
publication have registered the image of this town and its
inhabitants and have become an important document.
They allowto go further back into the past.
The album begins with Alter Szpilman ՝ s life' s story
that was reconstructed owing to the Public Library's
archives and the recollections of the photographer's
daughter Bina Hacohen.
Photos are arranged according to the following criteria:
1. Alter Szpilman in different years ofhis life
2. Photographer's family photos
3. Open ֊ air photographs
4. Studio photos
5. Portrait photographs
6. Photographic experiments
7. Views ofWegrow
Alter Szpilman, the author of photos, which are
presented in this photo album, for the most ofhis life lived
and worked in Wegrow. Despite the fact that for many years
he was the only photographer in town, we have known very
little about him.
Alter Chaim Szpilman was born on the 13th ofjune
in 1893 as second child into the family of a photographer
Haim Abraham and Chana Ruchla née De Lewi who had
three more children. According to the information
provided by his daughter, the Szpilman family immigrated
to England at the turn of the 19 th and 20th century, looking
for better economic perspectives. However, after spending
a couple ofyears in England, they came back to Poland. The
only photo studio in the area of Wegrow became the main
source of the family income. Owing to his father, Alter
learned know- how of photography, the craft that he bound
for life. In the twenties Alter was the owner of the photo
studio, which he inherited from his father.
In 1926 Alter Szpilman married Rachel, née
Szpilman. From this marriage, the only Szpilman's
daughter Balbina (Bina ) Edith, was born on the 18th
ofNovember 1926.
The situation of the photographer and his family
changed after the outbreak of the IIWW. Alter Szpilman
after a very brief period ofworking was in hiding. He used to
have false documents and used the name of Stanislaw
Wojciechowski. He often had to change his place of
residence. Most of the time he lived in Warsaw and Lukow.
Thanks to his Aryan facial features, false
documents and help of Polish inhabitants Szpilman's
family as one of very few survived the period of II WW and
the Holocaust.
In 1944 Alter Szpilman reopened photo studio in
Wegrow. In 1957 he and his wife immigrated to Israel,
where he established a photo studio. He died on the 19th of
May 1960.
