Summary
Twenty-third volume of W służbie nauki {In the Service of Science) series
results from a meeting devoted to the multifaceted legacy of Wiesław Bieńkow-
ski, the meeting conceived - as noted in the Foreword by Jan M. Małecki ֊ with
an express intention to remind the general public - always with reference to
archival materials - of Bienkowski’s varied activities as well as of the impact
he had on his field of study. Contributions contained in the present volume were
thus originally presented at a session held in Aula Magna of the Academy on
18 October 2010, itself forming a sequel to the international conference Libra-
ries, Information, Books: Interdisciplinary Research and Practice in 21st Cen-
tury. On the 10th Anniversary of Professor Wiesław Bieńkowski s Death, held on
7֊8 June 2010 and organized by the Institute of Information and Library Science
of the Jagiellonian University. The session was accompanied by a commemora-
tive exhibition “Civis Cracoviensisyf. Wiesław Bieńkowski (1926-1999), Biogra-
pher and Bibliographer prepared by the Archive of Science of Polish Academy
of Sciences and Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences in Cracow.
Opening the volume, the contribution of Jerzy Wyrozumski, Kraków w ży-
ciu Wiesława Bieńkowskiego {Wiesław Bieńkowski and the city of Cracow), re-
minds the reader of the important part played by the honorand in the activities of
various institutions of the city, of his membership and later presidency of the
Society of the Friends of the History and Monuments of Cracow (the dates are
respectively 1956 and 1964-1980). It also commemorates his membership of
the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1994), and the period of his
appointment to its Board (1996-1999). Finally, it highlights Professor’s scho-
larly activities as biographer of numerous personages involved with city’s past
and present.
Relying on bibliometric analysis (as illustrated in six tables) the contribution
of Marta Skalska-Zlat and Anna Żbikowska-Migoń, Obecność Wiesława Bień-
kowskiego w naukowym ruchu wydawniczym {The presence of Wiesław Bień-
kowski in scholarly publishing movement) discusses the content and focal points
of Wiesław Bienkowski’s publications.

Summary
In the third essay, Wiesław Bieńkowski - bibliograf (Wiesław Bieńkowski,
a bibliographer), Stefan Gąsiorowski discusses honorand’s bibliographical acti-
vities consequent upon his employment in the Library of Gdansk, and, later, in
the Documentation Section of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy
of Sciences (Department of Scientific Information) - he served as the head of
this latter in the years 1968-1999. Also considered are his didactic career at the
Jagiellonian University, his editorial activities as both author and editor of nume-
rous biographies, and, finally, his work as a reviewer of many works in his own
field of study.
In her essay Biografistyka w dorobku naukowym Wiesława Bieńkowskiego
(The place of biography in the scholarly legacy of Wiesław Bieńkowski) Anna
Gruca discusses the most important biographical works of the Professor, both
partial and thematic, commemorative notes, shorter notes included in biographi-
cal dictionaries, additionally emphasizing the importance of honorand’s theoreti-
cal works on source materials to be employed in a biographic study.
Ethnographic legacy of the honorand is discussed by Anna Spiss in her
essay Wiesław Bieńkowski jako etnograf (Wiesław Bieńkowski as etnographer).
She duly emphasizes Bieńkowski’s connection to the Ethnographic Museum in
Cracow and to the Polish Ethnological Society, and highlights the importance of
his works on the history of ethnography, among others of his biography of Oskar
Kolberg.
The next essay, Gdańskie kontakty w życiu profesora Wiesława Bieńkow-
skiego (Wiesław Bieńkowski and his connection to Gdansk), by Maria Pelczar,
analyzes the importance of the period Bieńkowski spent in this city (1951-
1953), his work in the City Library, and later close relations with his former
workplace.
The book collection of Bieńkowski, its character and the place occupied
in it by Cracoviana become an object of separate study by Piotr Lechowski
(O zamiłowaniach bibliofilskich Wiesława Bieńkowskiego; Wiesław Bieńkowski,
a bibliophile).
Next, Maria Kocójowa analyzes Bienkowski’s connection with the Jagiello-
nian University. In her ((Drugi dom ” Wiesława Bieńkowskiego w Uniwersytecie
Jagiellońskim (The “other home”: Wiesław Bieńkowski and the Jagiellonian
University) she discusses didactic activities of the scholar with particular
emphasis on both his methodology and personality, the latter of which influenced
scholarly endeavors of the Professor as well as his social life.
The surviving archival materials contributed vastly to Ewa Dziurzynska’s
essay, Z biegiem lat, z biegiem dni. Kalendarze Wiesława Bieńkowskiego (As
the Days Come and the Days Go: Wiesław Bienkowski’s calendars). The essay
is an exercise in biographical research - the everyday personal notes surviving
in calendars allow for a construction of actual biography: it is through them that
we construct a more human image of the Professor, man visited by passions, joy
and, occasionally, sadness.

The other part of the volume comprises essays of more commemorative na-
ture: first, Mieczysław Wrzesień, President of Oskar Kolberg Cultural Society
of Przysucha, shows how his work-related acquaintance with Bieńkowski grew
into a personal friendship {Przyjaźń z Kolbergiem w tie; Bound by Kolberg. My
friendship with Wiesław Bieńkowski).
Second, Jan M. Małecki, who both studied and worked alongside Bieńkow-
ski, remembers the time they spent together at the Institute of History of the
Polish Academy of Sciences, all the while highlighting his friend’s good nature
and wit {O spotkaniach i o przyjaźni z Wiesławem Bieńkowskim; My meetinsg
andfriendship with Wiesław Bieńkowski).
Next, Wanda Pindlowa (Chair of Library Science and Scientific Informa-
tion. Jagiellonian University) revokes the memory of an expedition to Uppsala,
undertaken as part of university exchange programme {Wspomnienie z wyjazdu
naukowego z Profesorem Bieńkowskim za granicą; Foreign expedition with Wie-
sław Bieńkowski: a remembrance).
Then, Jacek A. Kabata, erstwhile Ph.D. student of the Professor, recalls the
atmosphere of the seminars and students’ later meetings with Wiesław Bieńkow-
ski {Mój mistrz, profesor Wiesław Bieńkowski; My teacher, professor Wiesław
Bieńkowski) - his contribution paints a fascinating image of a true teacher, in-
spiring mentor, but also immensely erudite, witty man who throughout his life
remained a truly social creature.
The final very short text comes from the letter of Władysław Chojnacki’s son
Wojciech: it highlights the strength and continuity of honorand’s memory.
