Summary
A number of 6200 Polish people who have been awarded the honorary title
“Righteous among the Nations” is much smaller than the number of people who
were engaged in rescuing Jews during the war. Initially, only those were awarded
who survived, while many of Poles rescuing Jews were killed together with those
whom they tried to help. Those who survived, both Jews and Poles, had often to
share the fate of expatriates, for forced displacement included all inhabitants of
the Polish Eastern Borderlands (Kresy). They were also in danger of deportations
to the USSR, of repressions by the new occupier and the authorities imposed by
it. Bonds that occasionally formed between the rescued and their rescuers, often
casual acquaintances, sometimes of unknown identity, were broken soon after the
war. Jews emigrated in large numbers, and contacts were broken, sometimes due
to the “isolation” of Poland from the rest of the word.
Nowadays, the honorary title of the “Righteous” could be awarded also post-
humously, but a nomination forward could be put only by a rescued Jew. And
those living are very few.
The Dictionary includes֊ mainly biographic entries of people who have not
been awarded by the Yad Vashem. Probably some of them never strove for it, like
two sisters, Maria Barqcz and Malwina Kamiriska, who explained to Ruta Linder,
whom they sheltered during the war, when she wanted to get them awarded the
title of Righteous: “it is unnecessary. The biggest award for us is you being alive”.
Others didn’t live to see the award. Certainly, there were also those who did not
deserve it, although the Jews whom they helped survived. The publication empha-
sises especially these biographic entries which present a picture of everyday life
under the occupation. Choices made by people. Dangers threatening people. As
a lens to better understand events of that time.
Apart from biographic entries of people known by first and family name, or
only family name, there are in the Dictionary also biographic entries of unknown
people. Such as a “nanny”, “neighbour”, “priest”, “Mary”, “peasant” or “Pole”. Their
assistance, sometimes small, to all appearances unimportant, was often one of the
links of the long chain of help. Who knows, maybe it was them who played a key
role in rescuing Polish Jews? This fact was pointed out by Karolina Lanckoronska,

who from 1941 cared for prisoners in the General Government on behalf of the
Central Welfare Council. She wrote: if the future historian doesn’t grasp the gist
of things, if he is unable to show who was the main hero of this war, his efforts
will be futile and the future generations of Poles will not know the truth”.
