Mysz^cin, site 19, voivodeship Lubuskie.
For the younger Stone Age
for the 20th century
SUMMARY
Excavation examinations conducted on site 19
in Mysz^cin covered the area of almost 10 ha,
and delivered numerous sources subject to
this publication. In this publication there were
presented the results of geomorphological, ar-
chaeological, anthropological, archaeozoologi-
cal, botanic, dendrology, and petrographic
analyses of pottery and stone artifacts.
In the monograph there were presented the
characteristics of settlement relics associated
with various stages of inhabitation of this area,
starting with late Paleolithic (Hamburg culture
- these materials were published separately),
Neolithic, until the end of World War II.
The oldest remains are associated with
Funnelbeaker culture; vessel rudiments and
the feature discovered in section S, the north-
ern part of recognized excavated terrain, are
dated on the Wiory phase. The settlement asso-
ciated with Corded Ware culture is confirmed
only due to two acquired vessel rudiments.
Special attention, due to huge number of
discovered relics, should be paid to the re-
mains of a colony associated with Lusatian
culture people settlement. The essential part
of Lusatian culture colony building was posi-
tioned on the area located north-west of pres-
ently non-existing watercourse, creating a few
smaller aggregations within sections A, B, C,
E, F and G (Fig. XII-XV). Beside two pits in-
terpreter as in-ground parts of homesteads,
numerous remains of colony agricultural de-
velopment were discovered. On the basis of
acquired pottery collection, in which the share
of Urad cups and twin-cone sharp profiled
vessels seems to be more and more visible, the
usage time of the colony was determined on
the III/IV-V period of Bronze Age. Much less
numerous are the confirmed remains identi-
fied with Pomeranian culture people settle-
ment, discovered in the region where Lusatian
culture features were appearing. These are pits
whose size (prevailing diameter up to 1 m)
does not give any assumptions to search for
remains of habitable character. Acquired vessel
rudiments allow to associate this stage of set-
tlement with late Halstatt period and younger
pre-Roman period.
Few features can be associated with Prze-
worsk culture of younger pre-Roman period
and Roman influence period. On the older pe-
riod two features are dated, one of which can
be a remain of a half-dugout, on the younger
one ֊ three small pits, including two pole relics.
During the examinations they found the
eastern edge of colony dated on the period
from the half of the 8th century till the end of
the 9th century. Four pits, being probably the
relics of half-dugouts, were discovered in the
southern zone of recognized excavated space,
within sections E, H and J (Fig. XV, XVII i XIX).
This colony can be associated with incinerator
cemetery, discovered circa 400 m north of it.
From the trench surfaces they acquired a small
collection of vessel rudiments, confirming us-

ing of this terrain also in phase E of early Me-
dieval period, and in late Medieval times.
With modern period, dating on the
18th/19th-20th century, four pits are associat-
ed, which can evidence the peripheral charac-
ter of settlement on this area. Much numerous
mobile material, mainly pottery (almost 9.000
rudiments), dated in wider ranges since the
break of the 16th/17th century till the 19th cen-
tury, was acquired from trench surfaces only.
With the youngest stadium of settlement
registered on site 19 in Myszşcin, almost 250
features are connected. They are associated
with German "nurturing" labor camp Bratz,
functioning in this place, and the construction
of motorway at the beginnings of the 40's of
the 10th century by the 3rd Reich. From the
sources coming from the World War II times
it appears that in the camp during the whole
period of its functioning almost 10.000 people
could have stayed, 2.500 of whom had lost
their lives. Some of the victims were buried in
Brojce (during the examinations, in one of the
features in the region of relics associated with
the labor camp, a skeleton of a woman was dis-
covered), whereas the place of rest of the other
victims remains unknown.
The site terrain was also used as burial
place, mostly in early Medieval times. FIow-
ever, on the Roman influence period one sin-
gle ashless grave is dated, with no remains of
stake, containing a bronze clasp beside burnt
bones. It was discovered in section U, in the
northern part of recognized excavated area,
and it might be a part of a cemetery of yet
undefined range. From the site area (section
A) there also come two other clasps made of
bronze, and a glass bead. These antiques are
connected with Wielbark culture. The grave
and loosely discovered objects are dated on
phases B2/Cl-Cla.
In early Medieval times the northern part
of the site was used for funeral purposes. In
sections O and T the main aggregation of in-
cinerator graves was discovered; 72 of graves
were stated as certain (they contained burnt
human bones), whereas 110 - as alleged ones.
On this cemetery, dated on the period from the
half of the 8th century till the end of the 9th
century, pit graves were revealed, including
those related in shape and size to burials of
Alt Käbelich-Neuenkirchen type, associated by
some of the researchers with funeral culture of
Slaves. There are premises to treat four burials
(054, 055, T210 and T216) as boat graves, or
in shape of boat. It is one of the basic prem-
ises allowing to see on the Myszçcin cemetery
elements of ritual characteristic for northern
circle connected with Scandinavian culture. At
the same time, the problem of ethnic affiliation
of people buried on the incinerator cemetery
should be kept unsolved, pointing the mixed,
i.e. Slavonic and Scandinavian, character of the
ritual. Additionally we should emphasize that
at least part of the burials originally could have
been placed under kurgans' earthworks or on
the earthworks which finally had been com-
pletely destroyed until the examination began.
The furnishings consisted of small amounts of
rudiments of one or a few vessels, in vast ma-
jority of Slavonic character (prevailing number
of Sukow type vessels against a small share of
pottery of Menkendorf, Feldberg type in unor-
namented version, or Tornow type). Out from
the grave pits and trench surfaces in the cem-
etery region there comes a small collection of
vessel rudiments whose origin we can associ-
ate with Frankish areas. Such provenance we
also take for bone comb whose fragments were
acquired from one of the graves, and for the
hatchet coming from the trench surface, in the
cemetery zone.
The tradition of burial place was sustained
in younger stadium of early Medieval period,
although cemetery then was several hundred
years after the youngest incinerator burials
(the presence of alleged earthworks over the
incinerator graves might be important). Circa
350֊400m south of the main aggregation of in-
cinerator graves 41 skeleton burials were dis-
covered. 14 of them were equipped with clay
vessels, bucket ferrules, iron knives, S-shaped
temple rings, and a probable arrow spearhead.
The dating of the cemetery is stated since the
2nd half, or the end of the 11th cent ury till the
break of the 12th/13th century.
We hope that presented materials
should add to enrichment of knowledge on

the character of settlement on Łagów Lake Dis-
trict since the Neolithic till the times of World
War II. The necropolis materials are unique re-
garding their cognitive character, they should
become an important contribution to recognize
funeral ritual in early Medieval times, and
they should be treated as an important element
referring to local settlement structures. Atten-
tion should also be paid to the tradition of us-
ing this terrain for funeral purposes, which
probably can be connected with the morphol-
ogy of the area, corresponding both in ancient
times and in early Medieval period, with the
images of the landscape of "the world of the
dead" that might have come from the sphere
of beliefs.
