European Context
Summary
The present volume consists of several studies and articles the
author has produced in his first ten years of academic career (1998—2008)
and there are strong arguments to support its publishing. First of all, the
volume reflects the didactic and scientific activity of Oliviu Felecan has
had at the Faculty of Letters of the North University of Baia Mare. Among
other achievements we would like to mention the three books he has
published as single author (The Concept of „ Work”—a Diachronic
Sociolinguistic Perspectivel 2) and coauthor together with Nicolae Felecan:
Dicta Memorabilia. Annotated Everyday Dictionary of Latin Acronyms,
Expressions, Aphorisms and Quotations2 and The Latin Language.
Grammar and Texts3. His interest in matters of linguistic and philological
concern is self-evident as the author has taken part in famous international
congresses such as Le Congres International de Linguistique et de
Philologie Romanes (editions XXII—Bruxelles, Belgia, XXIII—
Salamanca, Spania, XXIV—Aberystwith, Marea Britanie, XXV—
Innsbruck, Austria) and The International Congress of Onomastic Sciences
(editions XXI—Uppsala, Suedia, XXII—Pisa, Italia, XXIII—Toronto,
Canada). Moreover, Mr. Oliviu Felecan has participated in many conferences
and symposiums which were organized by important Romanian academic
centers (Cluj-Napoca, Iaşi, Timişoara, Arad, Baia Mare, and Satu Mare) as
well as in conferences from abroad such as the one in Budapesta (Colocviul

International “Mircea Eliade” in 1998 (The International Colloquium
“Mircea Eliade”) or in Chişinău (Colocviul international „Filologia
modernă. Realizări şi perspective în context european”, ediţia a Il-a,
Semiotica şi hermeneutica textului, 2008 (The International Colloquium
“Modern Philology. Accomplishments and Perspectives in a European
Context” second edition, The Semiotics and Text Hermeneutics.). The
works held in such conferences have been published in national or
international conference volumes. Due to limited or exclusive editions and
poor distribution and circulation, the volumes did not have sufficient
impact on those interested in the information they promoted. This leads to
the second argument we had in mind when we decided to have the present
work published. The volume is designed not only for students in MA
programs, universities, or high schools, but also for teachers and researchers
who are interested in the humanistic culture and linguistic phenomena.
As far as the structure of the present work is concerned, there are
some vast spheres of interest that put together most of the studies:
linguistics and romance philology, onomastics (especially anthroponymy),
lexicology (vocabulary), latin language and literature, classical culture and
civilization, history, religion, philosophy and so on. In order to avoid
misinterpretations, we have preserved the articles in their original format in
which they were held and/or published. We have added a summary in
English or French to the most important texts in Romanian, in order to
make their content available to researchers from abroad, and a short
passage in Romanian for the ones which were originally written in a
foreign language. The broad sphere of interest reflected in the works is one
of the reasons why each article is accompanied by its own bibliography and
the titles are not summed up at the end of the present volume.
I would like to thank my colleagues from the Foreign Languages
Department—Minodora Barbul, Nicoleta Feier, and Lia Covaci—and my
fonner students Larisa Gaz and Andreea Drulea for their support in
translating the texts. The studies gathered in the present volume could not
have had the expected impact on foreign specialists if it were not for their
support. The main aim of the present paper is to make the author’s
researches familiar to all those who are interested in the linguistic,
philological or cultural phenomenon, and not just to those who take part in
specialized events like congresses, symposiums or conferences. If we were
to quote Plato and invoke the principle scientia est felicitatis effectrix “the
science brings happiness”, we could say that the chapters that make up the
present volume are an invitation to knowledge, reading and culture
according to the medieval saying solus sapiens dives est “only the wise one
is rich”.

Résumé
Le présent volume réunit une partie des études et des articles de
l’auteur, travaux élaborés dans les dix premières années de carrière
universitaire (1998-2008). La nécessité de l’apparition du recueil s’appuie
sur plusieurs raisons. D’abord il vient combler une activité didactique -
déroulée à la Faculté de Lettres de l’Université de Nord de Baia Mare -
mais aussi une activité scientifique qui se reflète dans les trois livres dont
La Notion de « Travail » - une Perspective Sociolinguistique en
Diachronie1 est un livre d’auteur et deux autres publiés en collaboration
avec Nicolae Felecan: Dicta memorabilia. Dictionnaire usuel adnoté de
sigles, expressions, maximes et citations latins2 et Langue latine.
Grammaire et textes1 2 3.
Les préoccupations linguistiques et philologiques se sont
concrétisées dans des participations aux congrès internationaux renomés:
Le Congrès International de Linguistique et de Philologie Romanes (XXIIe

philologie modeme. Réalisations et perspectives en contexte européen”, IIe
édition, La sémiotique et l herméneutique du texte, 2008) ne sont pas
négligeables. Les études présentées dans le cadre de ces manifestations ont
été publiées dans des volumes parus en Roumanie et à l’étranger, volumes
qui, à cause d’un tirage restreint ou d’une distribution déficitaire, n’ont pas
connu l’impact qui soit proportionnel à l’intérêt de ceux préoccupés par la
problématique en cause. Ce serait une seconde raison qui justifie
l’apparition de ce compendium qui rend service non seulement aux
étudiants ou aux élèves mais également aux professeurs chercheurs
passionnés par la culture humaniste et par le phénomène linguistique.
Concernant la structure du présent volume, on peut observer
quelques larges domaines d’intérêt autour desquels tourne la majorité des
études: linguistique et philologie romane, l’onomastique (surtout
l’anthroponymie), lexicologie (vocabulaire), langue et littérature latine,
culture et civilisation classique, l’histoire, la religion, la philosophie etc.
Pour éviter toute interprétation, nous avons gardé les articles en leur langue
d’origine, tels qu’ils avaient été publiés ou présentés. Pour faciliter l’accès
des chercheurs de l’étranger au contenu, nous avons résumé les plus
importants textes roumains en anglais ou en français et, quant aux textes
rédigés dans une langue de circulation internationale, nous avons ajouté un
extrait en roumain. Vu la richesse scientifique des textes réunis, chaque
matériel est suivi par sa propre bibliographie sans que celle-ci soit reprise à
la fin du recueil.
Nous remercions les collègues du département des langues
modernes - Minodora Barbul, Nicoleta Feier, Lia Covaci - et les anciens
étudiantes Larisa Gâz et Andreea Drulea pour leur aide dans la traduction
des textes. Dépourvues de leur traduction, les études du présent volume
n’auraient pas eu l’impact international désiré et n’auraient pas été mises
à la portée des spécialistes de l’étranger. D’ailleurs, le but principal du
recueil est celui de faire connaître les recherches de l’auteur auprès tous
ceux qui sont intéressés par le phénomène linguistique, philologique ou
culturel et dépasser ainsi les limites des congrès ou symposiums où ces
études ont été présentées. En citant Platon, scientia est felicitatis effectrix
„la science est productrice du bonheur”, l’invitation au processus de la
connaissance, à la lecture et à la culture s’adresse aux lecteurs par les
chapitres qui composent le présent recueil, car conformément à l’adage
médiéval selon lequel solus sapiens dives est, « ce n’est que le sage qui
est riche ».
