Insularity means a sample ,of aspects of ishndness and is
used for various topics. The meaning of the term includes
concepts such as seclusion or the existence of a language or
culture among neighbours who prefer different cultural signs - a
phenomenon which can create so called language islands .
Such islands can be open towards input from outside and,
vice versa, they can also influence their surroundings. However,
such islands are also able to sink , to die out, if the elements
of their identities disappear due to superposition by influences
from outside.
This book focuses on various perspectives on insularity ranging
from the topics of language islands, scientific reasoning, music,
to ethnic communities or cultural identities. The contributions
come from an interdisciplinary group of authors working at
universities in different European countries. The essays highlight
interdisciplinary aspects of insularity as - real or imaginary -
small worlds.
