INTRODUCTION
Dear reader!
I would like to start my research work with the words of
the famous Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-
1543) - the man, who turned upside down the views for the
Universe structure: “I am not enamoured of my conceptions to
an extent to neglect what the others think of them. I am well
aware of the fact that the ideas of one philosopher are not a
subject of assessment by the ordinary people, since he aims to
search the truth everywhere to a level, allowed to the human
mind by God. But I consider that the completely wrong views
should be avoided”. In the area of the quite diverse literature
there exist works, in which we find out all technical qualities,
but despite that they look like uninhabited buildings. This
means, that in their construction something very important has
been omitted. I admit, that you expect in this book, headed
“The Zograf Monastery in the Archives of the State security”,
to read only sensations, abundantly garnished with criminal
taste. I will have to disappoint you. The subsequent pages out-
line a serious documentary reading matter, in which a leading
place is given to the archive materials, related concretely to the
Bulgarian monastery “Zograf’ in Greece and behind which
stand actions and counteractions, executed years in succession
on one side by the State security at that time and on the other -
by the Greek state and religious services. This book does not
aim, in any way, at playing the role of a towboat, which drags
behind itself the barge of morality. As far as it concerns the
time of action, it has really been divided and is a real part of
the political international landscape. This in its turn predefined
the sharp subject lines in the present study, analyzing mostly
the period from World War II to the end of 80-years of the XX
century - or in other words the known by the older generation
129
“cold war” between the East and the West with all deriving
negative consequences, accompanied by 24 hours deafening
radio, press and TV roar and curses from both sides of the
highly erected ideological barricade. It was a period, during
which the arguments were delicate, and the positions — literally
hard to the utmost extent.
Relying on your good will, dear reader, we will start to-
gether along those paths, which will help us to define the cor-
rect direction for entering into one completely unknown zone,
full of hits below the waist, mainly against Bulgaria. At this
zone, we will definitely see the repulsive results not only from
the extremely sharp and deep ideological opposition, the traces
of which (unfortunately) have passed permanently through the
religious relations at the Balkans. The archive materials will
make us witnesses of unexpected turns. Here a special place
will be dedicated to “Slavonic-Bulgarian History” — the relic,
left by the great patriot Paisius, who set to fire the sparkle of
the Bulgarian national consciousness. For his incredible book
the past two hundred and fifty years proved to be insufficient to
extinguish the smoldering coals under the ashes of patriotism,
left on the sheets, although written at that time by a goose
feather. Here the comment will not concern the searching of
the reply to the simple question HOW has this great book of
the Bulgarian nation been taken out of the Aton monastery, but
the comparatively more complex finding of the motives WHY
this has been done. In a world of further acceleration of com-
munications, shortening distances, global production and vast
markets, most important element for national identity becomes
the individual awareness of the national spirit. As we will get
convinced in the subsequent narration this deep personal feel-
ing would hardly be maintained only on flags and national
hymns, especially when this concerns the threatening trends of
losing the Zograf monastery after ten centuries Bulgarian pos-
session. In the following pages we will meet also evidences
130
i
from those years related to the reasonably uneasy causes for the
bringing by our cultural figures from the ruined to unrecogniz-
able degree cell of father Paisius only pieces of bricks and nails
- the only survived proof of his condemned to remain in the
ages epoch work.
Moreover, my curious reader, you will meet in the con-
tent of the archive documents evidences not only for the sur-
prising unpreparedness and the unexplainable carelessness of
the Bulgarian monks from that period of ideological opposition
regarding the preservation of valuable manuscripts in the
Zograf monastery. You will see also facts for the unprece-
dented plunder of a row of important significant immovable
properties by various representatives of the religious and world
fauna among our Balkan neighbours.
As well known the monasteries are those places, where
the national ancient times settle, without being touched by our
modernity. But, together with this in the following pages the
survey of the State security archives will continue, fixing all
pieces chaos, which set up at the end the outer space of the
threatening existence of the Zograf monastery up to 1989,
when its Bulgarian future was really endangered. As we will
get convinced from the archives, far from flourishing is the
situation related to the properties of the Zograf monastery in
Bulgaria, in which in the last two decades many private com-
panies have conveniently established, turning their business
into a first class pulpit for social prosperity. These quite serious
problems up to now are still buried in the sticky swamp of cor-
porative interests, which have overgrown, unfortunately in the
last twenty years, with more complicated court cases, being
without exception in harm of the monastery. You cannot blame
anybody, who admits things, in order to continue to work. But
when he does things, which hamper others to work, this means
that he had crossed the tolerance limit. Such are the sad facts,
which come out of the collected eleven bulky volumes archive
131
documents of the State security. Thus the monk brotherhood,
living in the world of religious phantasm and miracles, just
could not cope with the problems even by steady prayers to
God. The engulfed in the past man, who moves like a shadow
in the monastery life under the coming from the history im-
pulse, cannot possess senses for the surrounding modernity.
Unfortunately the ages have thrown thick shades, which
have nothing in common with the Christian love and self sacri-
fice, in the relations on the Balkans and we recollect them
nowadays with sorrow and take adequate lessons. Our penin-
sula is another world. Here every country has its sufficiently
long historical development, everyone possesses pantheon of
heroes and enemies and everybody lives with his personal sen-
sation, that at a definite moment he has become a victim of
betrayal from the hostile neighbours. The reason is that these
are ancient lands, countries, separated not only by the boundary
stones, but by the history and the culture. Thus we should not
forget that for the availability of a good will two sides are nec-
essary and that at the political scene the truth usually becomes
the first victim. That’s why I would like the following pages to
become a reason not for unfolding national passions, but a
cause to consider carefully and accurately all those numerous
threads of the joint historical development on the Balkan pen-
insula, which unite us, rather than those which place us in hos-
tile camps. The historic destiny has not only put in close neigh-
bourhood the Balkan countries. It has made even more uniting
them spiritually, has defined them common conditions and
equal way for age-long development. The thirteen centuries of
close neighbourhood, in which we have lived on this piece of
European land, remember the long lasting periods of mutual
agreement and joint efforts in the forming of prosperous future.
South-east Europe, living at this geographical and political
part, has never been a subject of the history, but almost always
֊ its object. There have been periods, of course, during which
132
during which the unity of the countries in this region has been
unintentional, their destinies ֊ similar, not according to their
desire and not under the power of warm feelings or proximity
in the languages, but due to similar historical situations, which
have united or disunited them at different times in numerous
configurations and always in hesitant and undetermined out-
lines.
As far as it concerns the Bulgarian-Greek relations, they
are actually something very special. Our two nations are con-
nected by the life-giving streams of the ancient Orthodox relig-
ion, by our common Christian mission, by the close church
popular ideals and most of all the grand deed of the saint broth-
ers Cyril and Methodius, who left a bright trace in epochs of
progress and hardships for the Bulgarian nation. Quite serious
is the contradiction, coming at a front place from the collected
State security documents, that at the presence of such historical
positive factors, official Athens up to 1989 continuously and
constantly has searched behind the thick ideological smoke
ways if not totally to close up, at least to a maximum extent to
make uneasy in all possible ways the Bulgarian presence at
Aton. The archive documents definitely lead us to another
trace, revealing the important role of Lyudmila Zhivkova at
this dangerous quadrille of events (being played sometimes at
the edge of the precipice), directly connected with the future of
the Zograf monastery.
These archive documents definitely impress us by
something else. The approach of Greece to this circle of prob-
lems is martial in all aspects, including mass media, church and
state. Moreover it demonstrates extreme confidence in its cor-
rectness, which reaches the certainty, that the Pope at the next
morning will accept both the Judaism and the Islam. From
Bulgarian side the behavior is entirely different: at top Party
level special instructions were given, saying that the Greek side
“is very sensitive on this issue” and that’s why orders were
133
rendered requiring each material for the press, related to this
circle of problems, to be agreed upon by the Ministry of Exte-
rior. Thus each media initiative was dried up in embryo. Fur-
thermore the documents clearly reveal that the whole delicate
in its essence matter has been left entirely at the hands of the
State security - something completely absurd, having in mind
the fact that the monk brotherhood at the Zograf monastery
needed desperately most of all of doctors, psychologists, social
workers, historians and financial advisers.
The thrown by the Bulgarian special services for 18 full
years vast human and material resource at one instance was
scattered in the air like the blossoms of dandelion. The only
consolation is that the Zograf monastery has withstood during
the ages storms and tornadoes and has made and continues to
make the far past more real and tangible for us. I do think in
my research work I have proved, that I am not a follower of
hypothesis. I have not used concepts of the folklore. I have
worked entirely using facts from the archives, which are di-
rectly related to one constantly developing up to the 90-years
of XX century very convulsive period, and moreover - which
outlined deeply buried on the Balkans fighting positions of
ideological, state and religious character.
It is always exciting to investigate a problem. This pro-
cess stimulates an action. But at this study, dear reader, you
will not meet my opinion. This is far from the fact that I do not
have a personal position on the problems, which I have placed
here, based on sufficient rich archive material. The reason is a
bit different. Much more important for me is to provoke your
thinking about a past and in all aspects extremely sharpened
international ideological period on the Balkans and allow you
to try to look inside the pointed out findings and make your
own conclusions. By the way everything which occurred dur-
ing this unquiet time up to the 90-years of the past century has
a direct relation to two holy Bulgarian universes — one of
134
which is 250 years old and the other - over 1000 years. This
means, that your assessment will be decisive for the fact
whether I have succeeded in my attempt to put in order some-
thing reasonable in the subsequent lines of this book.
