Main description: This monograph attempts to give a comprehensive picture of one of the most popular didactic and symbolic forms of literary expression in the Renaissance and Baroque Hungary. It looks at the effect of emblematics upon literary theory, upon different genres such as epigrams, dramas, sermons, biographies of saints, and upon the fine arts. The authors elaborate a typology of emblem books and emblematic prints, examine the role of education in the transmission of the form, and investigate the English reception of a late humanist emblem book by an Hungarian author. They consider both the content and appearance of that material as well as the changing structures and functions, and historical and international influences
