Beschreibung: | Main description: One of the conspicuous characteristics of the northern dialects of Britain and Ireland is variation in verbal agreement, especially the use of plural verbal -s. Once a mark of a consistent, categorical grammatical system in the traditional dialects of the area, today verbal -s appears in highly complex, hybrid variation patterns in the modern vernaculars. This corpus-based study explores continuities and discontinuities between the dialects involved, and discusses the implications of such hybrid variable sytems for a usage-based theory of grammatical competence Main description: One of the conspicuous characteristics of the northern dialects of Britain and Ireland is variation in verbal agreement, especially the use of plural verbal -s. Once a mark of a consistent, categorical grammatical system in the traditional dialects of the area, today verbal -s appears in highly complex, hybrid variation patterns in the modern vernaculars. This corpus-based study explores continuities and discontinuities between the dialects involved, and discusses the implications of such hybrid variable sytems for a usage-based theory of grammatical competence Mundart (DE-588)4040725-1 gnd rswk-swf Verb (DE-588)4062553-9 gnd rswk-swf Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 gnd rswk-swf Syntaktische Kongruenz (DE-588)4184252-2 gnd rswk-swf Sprachvariante (DE-588)4077741-8 gnd rswk-swf England Nord (DE-588)4120407-4 gnd rswk-swf Nordirland (DE-588)4075462-5 gnd rswk-swf Schottland (DE-588)4053233-1 gnd rswk-swf 1\p (DE-588)4113937-9 Hochschulschrift gnd-content Englisch (DE-588)4014777-0 s Mundart (DE-588)4040725-1 s Sprachvariante (DE-588)4077741-8 s Verb (DE-588)4062553-9 s Syntaktische Kongruenz (DE-588)4184252-2 s Nordirland (DE-588)4075462-5 g 2\p DE-604 Schottland (DE-588)4053233-1 g 3\p DE-604 England Nord (DE-588)4120407-4 g 4\p DE-604 http://www.degruyter.com/doi/book/10.1515/9783110944556 Verlag Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
