With the exception of Buddenbrooks, money has only occasionally aroused the interest of scholars as a subject of study in the novels of Thomas Mann. Using contemporary monetary theory as a background, the present study undertakes a close textual analysis to trace the meaning of money and awareness of money in the deep structure of Mann’s works. As Anna Kinder demonstrates, his novels reflect not only the latest in the monetary theory of their times, but also expose the uncertainty and allure of modern economic relations With the exception of Buddenbrooks, money has only occasionally aroused the interest of scholars as a subject of study in the novels of Thomas Mann.
