Tab Every presidential election since 1964 has been won by the candidate backed by the most united party; yet as party unity has become more important to voting decisions, it has also become increasingly difficult to achieve. In his latest book, Martin Wattenberg offers an in-depth interpretation of the presidential elections of the 1980s, illuminating current theories of political behavior and how they operate in today's candidate-centered politics. Wattenberg investigates the impact that political parties' declining relevance has had on presidential politics. As the parties' ability to polarize opinion weakened and voters were set politically adrift, the candidates themselves had to fill the power vacuum. Interestingly, as the candidates have become more prominent, their popularity has spiraled downward. Wattenberg's national survey data debunks the notion of Reagan as the "teflon president;' demonstrating that many negative judgments stuck to Reagan's public image throughout the 1980s, particularly the criticisms of his conservative policies. The author's intricate analysis shows that many people were torn between candidates whose policies they preferred and those who they thought would produce the best results, and these contradictory attitudes were primarily resolved in favor of Reagan and Bush. This book is not only the successor volume to the author's widely used book on American parties, it is also a controversial and thought-provoking commentary on American parties, politics, and representative government |

Harvard University Press [1991] 1 Online-Ressource (ix,186p.) txt rdacontent c rdamedia cr rdacarrier 5 schw.-w. Abb., 31 schw.-w. This book is not only the successor volume to the author's widely used book on American parties, it is also a controversial and thought-provoking commentary on American parties, politics, and representative government In English USA Präsident (DE-588)2033432-1 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1980 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1980-1990 gnd rswk-swf Geschichte 1980-1988 gnd rswk-swf Party affiliation / United States Political parties / United States Presidents / United States / Election / 1980 Presidents / United States / Election / 1984 Presidents / United States / Election / 1988 Partis politiques / Adhésion / États-Unis Présidents / États-Unis / Élection / 1980 Présidents / États-Unis / Élection / 1984 Présidents / États-Unis / Élection / 1988 Partis politiques / États-Unis Presidents / Election Politische Wissenschaft Politik Party affiliation Political parties Political science Verkiezingen Presidenten Presidentskandidaten Partei Kandidat (DE-588)4131693-9 gnd rswk-swf Partei (DE-588)4044737-6 gnd rswk-swf Präsidentenwahl (DE-588)4047020-9 gnd rswk-swf USA USA (DE-588)4078704-7 gnd rswk-swf USA Präsident (DE-588)2033432-1 b Präsidentenwahl (DE-588)4047020-9 s Kandidat (DE-588)4131693-9 s Partei (DE-588)4044737-6 s Geschichte 1980-1990 z 1\p DE-604 Geschichte 1980-1988 z 2\p DE-604 Geschichte 1980 z 3\p DE-604 USA (DE-588)4078704-7 g 4\p DE-604 Erscheint auch als Druckausgabe 978-0-674-86570-9 https://doi.org/10.4159/harvard.9780674865723 Verlag Volltext 1\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 2\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 3\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk 4\p cgwrk 20201028 DE-101 https://d-nb.info/provenance/plan#cgwrk |
