Historians towards the challenges
of the 20th century
The book is a collection of essays similar in style to classi¬
cal studies in the history of historiography inaugurated in
Poland by Marian
Henryk Sereyski
and developed later by
such historians as
Andrzej Feliks
Grabski,
Jerzy
Maternicki
and Andrzej
Wierzbicki. In pursuing their studies, they usual¬
ly stepped outside the realm of academic historiography, get¬
ting themselves involved in the examination of every corner
of historical thought, and interested in the exploration of all
the ways in which it made itself present in public discourse.

The studies of the scholars just mentioned often assumed
the form of essays that discussed both the lives of history
writers as well as the interpretations of the past they had
advanced. Their biographies were believed to provide an
important context the elucidation of which was supposed to
help better understand their works. The book presented here
shares this approach.
It deals with a group of ten historians:
Oskar Halecki,
Wacław Jędrzejewicz, Leon Koczy, Ludwik Kolankowski, Wi¬
told Kula, Marian Kukieł,
Zanna
Kormanowa, Jerzy Topol-
ski, Henryk Wereszycki and Paweł Zaremba.
Each essay has been divided into two parts. The first aims
at shedding some light on political and ideological prefe¬
rences of the historians, attempts at revealing their intellec¬
tual fascinations, and strives for identifying experiences that
made them decide to go down the road of historical stu-dies.
Its goal lies also in the indicating of schools of thought they

represented and the revealing of a tradition that informed their writ¬
ings. The second part offers analysis of their
oeuvre,
which sometimes
amounts simply to a general review of their most important works,
coupled with an attempt to answer the question of which of them
have managed to withstand the test of time and can still serve as
a point of departure for further studies.
The essays collected in the book have their origins in the author's
longstanding interest in the history of the Polish historiography of the
twentieth century which reaches as far back as the late 80's of
the previous century and which was first focused on the historiogra¬
phy of the Polish People's Republic, to be extended later also to the
Polish historiography in exile.
For the preparation of the essays I relied on both the archive ma¬
terial and scholarly literature as well.

York are among the institutions whose collections I have searched for
all the information pertaining to the lives and work of the historians
that are the subjects of this study.
Not for nothing has the book been entitled Historians towards
the Challenges of the 20th Century. These „challenges" are intended
to serve here as a common denominator of their lives. They are of
a threefold nature.
In the first place, they had clearly a philosophical dimension to
them. In the previous century, men could no longer consider them¬
selves to be free and autonomous beings, independent of the world
which they were able to affect without determining it at the same
time. The 20th century presented the individual with the totality of

in Hegel's sense of the word
-
from which there was no es¬
cape. One had to be for or against. Totalitarian systems were as over¬
powering as to assist the notion that their advent was inevitable, lea¬
ving men only too ready to accept the doctrine of historical necessity.
Historians towards the challenges of the 20th century
In the second place, challenges facing the historians were also
of sociological nature. The concept that seems to best fit this socio¬
logical context is that of game
—
proposed some time ago by
Janusz
Gockowski. He distinguished two kinds of such games
—
the game of
adjustment and the game of identity pursuit. Getting involved in the
first does not rule out involvement in the second.
And in the third place, the challenges were bound up with men's
everyday experiences. History began to creep into people's daily
routine, reaching the most ordinary aspects of their lives. The past
century witnessed deep changes in every sphere of human existence.

Jerzy
Stempow-
ski, a distinguished Polish essayist and one of the authors of the Paris-
based journal
„Kultura''
(Culture). The distinction between private
and public life, still clear in the 19th century, became blurred a cen¬
tury later.
The book is designed to contribute to the discussion of the role of
the intelligentsia in the past century, addressing the question of how
its members tried to resolve a dilemma of choosing between the role

of a committed intellectual prepared to cast himself/herself into the
whirl of social and political battles and that of a thinker willing to stay
far away from all ideological wars. More specifically, it tries to answer
the question of how the heroes of this book understood their role as
historians and scholars.
It is the Second World War that became a key experience for
a great number of Polish historians. Many of them failed to survive
the war. Those who survived either lost their relatives or were dis¬
placed from their „small motherlands", having to start from scratch.
The war deprived them of their houses, libraries and manuscripts.
The latter were often ready for publication.
Decisions taken in Yalta and Potsdam divided historians. Most of
them decided to remain in Poland, only to find out that
—
in S. Ma-
rai's famous remark
—
„one cannot enter the new world dodging an
entrance fee". Consequently, some chose to support the Communist
regime, some tried to devise the best adjustment strategy, and some
opted to condemn themselves to a role of outsiders. The book, in my
Summary
opinion, provides a good illustration of the games which the historians
portrayed in it played in different periods of the Polish People's Repub¬
lic. It also shows changes in both their attitudes and in principles im¬
posed by the authorities. In a sense it leads to the conclusion that there
was no alternative to this game of adaptation to the system. In fact, it
was not only historians but the whole society that took part in it.
Those who decided to stay in exile also had to pay a price for their
choice. Cut off from Polish archives and libraries, often having rather
a poor knowledge of the language used in countries of their residence,
they were facing a new reality which was not always very
friendly.
There were very few
émigré
historians who managed to find their
place in the French or Anglo-Saxon historiography. They were associa¬
ted with Polish scientific institutions
—
usually with those based in
London.
Emigré
historians were also involved in a game. Their goal in this
game was to obtain the right to officially represent Polish independent
historiography
—
that which remained free of political pressure. All

the difficulties which they encountered in trying to get a permission
to form an official delegation representing Polish free historiography
during International Congresses of Historical Sciences can serve here
as a good example of their participation in this game.
Emigré
histo¬
rians also strove for making Polish history
—
and the history of East¬
ern Europe
—
occupy as important
a płace
in historical discourse in
the West as it, in their opinion, deserved.
The experiences of ten Polish historians presented in the book are
supposed to provide a prism through which to look at an important
part of Polish historiography in the 20th century. Of course the book
does not aspire to give a full account of the attitudes, choices and
achievements of Polish historians in the past century. It offers ten case
studies. The biographies of the historians illustrate dramatic ways of
Polish historiography in the 20th century
—
its turning points, conflicts
and often long-standing divisions. The figures characterized in the
book represent several generations of Polish historians, different his-
toriographical traditions, various fields of historical studies, and dif¬
ferent milieus. |
