Summary
The title that the author chose for the collection of fifteen articles studying old culture
in the Pomeranian region signifies: In
arte sua
quilibet rex (In one s art, everyone is king). It
combines the eternal dream of artists to obtain some significance and acceptance in social
life, if not the hegemony in a particular field of art and science. Thus, every artist may be
certain that the scientific or artistic field that he represents is genuinely enriched by him
and would not exist without him.
The following publication aims to present how the author has applied recent theo¬
retical and methodological proposals in the field of identification of artefacts in his own
research practice, mainly in books about the history of material culture, but also in works
devoted to medieval and modern as well as iconology. The issue of artefacts raised by
the author included numerous categories of objects of the old material culture, among
other things Gothic and Renaissance bells, sepulchral objects, medieval and modern ar¬
chitectural inscriptions, old
vasa
sacra, elements of costume and jewellery,
sigillographie
objects, pocket watch keys, thimbles dating from the fourteenth to the nineteenth century,
seals, metal garment accessories dating from the thirteenth to the twentieth century and
European pilgrim souvenirs. The following publication offers a presentation of prelimi¬
nary key theoretical and methodological problems discussed in detail in a book which is
currently being prepared titled Adiutor
historicus.

auxiliary sciences of history of material cul¬
ture). Currently there are forty five disciplines have been distinguished.
The chapters follow the chronological order. Thus they present problems related to
the history of culture in the Pomeranian since the medieval times to the interwar period.
All the studies, written between
1997-2008,
include conference papers and jubilee publica¬
tions and have already been published in small presses. The published studies have been
revised and supplemented with new illustrations (the bibliographical note at the end of
the book contains detailed information about all the articles).
The first five chapters are devoted to the studies of medieval objects in the Pomera¬
nian region. The first chapter (Gothic rings with inscriptions discovered in
Gdańsk
and
its vicinity) is a study of medieval annulology. The second chapter (Gothic stamp pistons
discovered in
Gdańsk
and its vicinity as epigraphic sources) is an example of a work
medieval typariology (science of stamp pistons). The third chapter (Gothic seals as

graphic sources (in the light of artefacts from
Gdańsk
collections) concerns the issues of
medieval plumbology (science of seals) and gothic microepigraphy. The fourth chapter
(Church fittings in
Gniew
castle in the times of the Teutonic Order) contains a description
of a collection of medieval paramentology, functioning in the medieval temple of a knight¬
ly order. The fifth chapter (Gothic tombstones in St. Nicolas church in
Gdańsk)
presents
problems with the identification of the sepulchral world of an important medieval temple
in
Gdańsk,
both in terms of the journeys of sepulchral objects within the church and in the
analysis epigraphic tombstone inscriptions.
The remaining ten chapters concern mainly modern times. The sixth chapter (Renes-
saince seal rings with metal seals as sources of knowledge of modern bourgeois jewellery
and sigillography) presents a study of modern typariology (as
a subdiscipline
of Renais¬
sance sigillography) as well as a study of science of modern stamp jewels. The seventh
chapter (Brass bung taps from the fifteenth century to the nineteenth century discovered
in
Gdańsk. Epistomiumological
study) highlights the importance of peg objects among
archeological finds and justifies the introduction into auxiliary sciences of history a new
science called epistomiumology. The eight chapter (Spoon with an apostle. From the
history of English artefacts in the
Gdańsk
Pomeranian region) is devoted to the English
spoon and as such may be qualified as a study of kochlearology, or the science of spoons.
It is an opportunity to look at other objects of English provenance discovered in
Gdańsk
and the Pomeranian region. The ninth chapter
(Gdańsk
church tokens from the sixteenth
to the eighteenth century. Calculological study) introduces in detail the issues related to
calculology (science of tokens,
jetons,
and other coin-like objects) and concerning under-
researched objects such as church tokens from Gdansk. The tenth chapter (Bone tooth¬
brushes discovered in
Gdańsk
among artefacts of the old hygienical culture) presents hy¬
gienical objects researched by a discipline called peniculology (or the science of brushes).
The eleventh chapter (Pocket watch keys as miniature work of art) highlights the role
of pocket watch keys as objects of considerable importance in the eighteenth and nine¬
teenth century. Even if small, they are artistically valuable objects. The twelfth chapter
(Buttons from
Gdańsk
clothing companies in the second half of the nineteenth century.
Orbiculological study) contains an introductory study of metal garment accessories and
signals the rules which govern the science of orbiculology, or the science of buttons. The
thirteenth chapter (Middle school education of Father
Norbert
Hildebrandt in
the light of
preserved school certificates. From the history of didactics in West Prussia in the second
half of the nineteenth century) stresses the importance of old school certificates, based
on a study of thirty artefacts. The fourteenth chapter (Chinese subject matter in Lesser
Gieldzinski s collection in
Gdańsk)
presents the fascination of a well-known
Gdańsk
col¬
lector with
Daleki Wschodu
art. The fifteenth chapter (Stamp iconography in the Free City
of
Gdańsk)
is a detailed study of philatelic ikonography, which discusses the importance
of
Gdańsk
stamps from the interwar period as significant historical sources of knowledge
about many aspects of political, social and artistic culture.
Since the first edition, the author s knowledge of the particular categories of artefacts
has greatly increased, at times so considerably that they could now easily develop into
separated books. Despite this, the author has decided to publish this book on the history of
culture in the Pomeranian region because in this form it can serve several important
fune-

tions.
Most importantly, it will provide the readers with information about the detailed
research in the field of cultural studies, mainly material culture, frequently ignored even
by the professional culture historians.
The studies devoted to the old Pomeranian culture will enable professional scholars,
as well as lovers of the Pomeranian history and collectors, a better understanding of nu¬
merous objects of diverse spheres of culture (old church culture, sepulchral culture, artis¬
tic culture, culinary culture, costumological culture, commercial culture, educational cul¬
ture, postage culture, collectors and craft). They will learn about the objects of knowledge
preserved in the context of their original purpose or in museum and church collections, as
well as lost objects, the knowledge of which is based on archival sources.
The study may also influence an increase in the number of young historians (not only
in the Pomeranian region) who would consider researching the old Pomeranian culture.
This publication will also constitute a set of scientific answers related to historical sources,
methodology and historiography. As such it should be a model in the field of material
culture and its auxiliary sciences of history.
