SUMMARY
KOSOVA’S SETTLEMENS - PRIZREN
Without doubts, Prizren is one of the most important settlements in
the territory of Kosova and the Balkans. Prizren has impressive past which is
the reason that different scientist dedicated significant attention to this
settlement by publishing number of works about this administrative, cultural,
historical and political centre. Different authors have written for Prizren in
aspect of archaeology, history, geography, ethnography, urbanism etc.
However, writings about the large territory, respectively the settlements of
this municipality are in a very small number. Therefore, this work will serve
as a complementary for the existing works concerning Prizren and its
surrounding.
The settlements of the current municipality of Prizren, in the past had
been closely connected with the administrative, cultural, educational and at
the time political centre ֊ Prizren. Through the indisputable historic
evidences it has been confirmed that Kosova in general and the territory of
Prizren are the heart of the Albanian consciousness. Kosova is the territory of
ancient Dardania where the essence of the Albanian nation is formed. The
major presence of Albanians in some territories of the Balkans and later in the
province of Kosova forms a material of interest for historic recourse, which
has disturbed and keeps disturbing the historians of Serbia. It is about the
genetic heritage that Kosova’s Albanians have from the Illyrs of Dardania.
The main goal of this book is to reveal the scientific truth, and to oppose the
antiscientific thesis of few geographers, anthropologists and historians that
have written about Kosova’s settlements and territories in favour of their
occupation policy.
The book is divided in two main parts that are later divided in titles
and subtitles.
The first part of the book presents the territory of Prizren from the
following aspects; geographic view, relief, clime, flora and fauna. Important
attention is dedicated to the historical vieé. Here is presented the short history
of the territory of Prizren from the ancient periods, the antique period,
medieval period, ottoman occupation period, the period after 1912 when these
territories were occupied by the Serbian state, period during World War I, the
time of the Yugoslavian Kingdom, the period after World War II, the socialist
period with a special elaboration of the last war fought by the Kosova’s
Liberation Army. In the other volume is presented the administrative and
territorial division of territory of Prizren during different historical periods.
Important attention is dedicated to the economic and social development of

this territory with a special view on the development of agriculture, farming,
trade, craft, tourism, education, culture, healthcare etc. from ancient time until
the end of the XX century when the war against the Serb aggressor began,
and the destruction of the economy that was developed by centuries. In the
volume about the population of this territory is presented the number of
inhabitants of the toen and of the territory in general based on the writings of
travel writers and early census of the ottoman government, latter documents
of the Serbian and Yugoslav state. These writings are deficient because on
particular periods they were done according to the religious structure, and
later for political goals. In the volume about settlements is presented the
formation of the first settlements of this territory, depending on historical
periods, those that were in the form of a cave, near rivers, main trade roads
and later the different local administrative centres. Here is presented the
formation, growth and later the decline of the number of settlements,
destruction of part of them as a result of the wars, the formation of nee
settlements etc.
The other part of the book presents and elaborates the history of every
settlement. For each of the settlements, depending on the possessed writings
are presented the main characteristics of that settlement (not entering into
historical details) as: geographic position, neighbourhoods, brotherhoods or
families that live or used to live in that settlement, most characteristic micro-
toponyms, archaeological marks and other evidences for the antiquity of that
settlement; archive and historic writings that are mentioned in the archive
documentation, data about the number of inhabitants, migration, mostly those
abroad ֊ in Turkey, Albania; destruction of the settlements as a result of
different wars, murders and massacres of the population of that settlement,
Slav colonisation of the settlement, notes (documents) about the recent war
fought KLA and the contribution of the inhabitants of the particular
settlement, murdering of the inhabitants, destruction of the houses and other
facilities by the Serb aggressor, abandoning of the country, the return etc.
The work is illustrated with a number of geographic maps, photos of
archaeological marks, photos of the town of Prizren, and some other
settlements. This raises the value of this work. At the end are presented the
sources and literature used for the book.
This book will serve the readers to learn the basic characteristics of
every settlement and to the future students as a guide for composition of
monographs for a particular settlement.
