SUMMARY
KOSOVA’S SETTLEMENTS - BESIANA (PODUJEVA)
Kosova, is a relatively small territory, with a complicated geo-
political position, with a long history, contradictions, interethnic
tensions and confrontations that even resulted with wars, a very rich
place but at the same time very poor - always represents an important
ad neurological tie in the Balkans. All of this is connected with the
building, development, destruction, rebuilding etc, of the settlements.
The geographical position, the appropriate conditions for living,
natural riches, good clime etc, made the region of Llap, respectively of
the municipality of Podujeva, now Besiana to be inhabited since the
early Ilirian period, and led towards the establishment of high number
of settlements. This enabled the region of Llap to play an important role
since early histoty until now. This is the reason for interest of the occu-
pations such as Roman, Byzantine, Slav, Ottoman, Serbian and others.
The municipality of Besiana (Podujeva), mainly includes the
part of the region of Llap, one part of Gallap and some regions of the
Albanik Mountanins. Even though Llap is a suburban part of the
albanian ethnic Gjeohapwsirw, from the ethnic compatibility point of
view is homogenous.
It must be stated that after the deportation of the Albanians from
Sanxhak of Nish in 1877/78 from the Serb government, the deported
population settled in high numbers in the territory i.e. in the settlements
of Llap and they created new settlements which the called Muhaxhire
(Deportation).
There was not a single place in this region in which Albanian
deported population didn’t live. The reason that the deported families
inhabited this region was because the border was near and they hoped
to return to the territory, which they abandoned by force. But this never
happened. After 1912 many inhabitants of this region, after the Serb
occupation migrated in Turkey and Albania. It is important to present
the fact that until 1912 this region was ethnically inhabited strictly with
Albanian population, in some parts there was a very small number of
Romans.

Immediately there have started colonization with Slav elements
with the aim to change national structure for this area and also for the
other Albanian regions such as in Kosovo and Macedonia. Here almost
in every Llap’s settlement were situated Slav colonists brought from
Power of Yugoslav Monarchy from different regions of Serbia,
Montenegro, Lika, and Herzegovina etc.
Settlements of Llap region include Municipality administrative
centres such as Besiana, villages- local centres, villages and groups of
houses.
In spatial aspect, a lot of settlements are situated near the
mountains and hills, low parts of regions around regional and
magisterial roads, in the valley while a part of these are still in the
mountain- hilly regions.
In the drafting of monograph: Settlements of Kosovo - Besiana
(Podujeva) are included 77 settlements. Here I have tried to present a
short view in factors aspect including short historic and economic
development of each settlement separately. In each settlement
depending on facts that we possessed are included these data: position
and geographical extension, settlement type, squares, respectively the
main families in the settlement, the most characteristic microtoponyms,
traces and archaeological evidences for settlement antiquity, written
and archived historical data for each settlements, population movement,
displacement abroad their country, killing, massacres in population
respectively destroy of that settlement etc. There is also presented the
number of population and families, based on the registration and the
other data and also that from the last war regarding the Serb aggression
during 1998- 1999 years.
This edition will be published within study of monograph
Settlements of Kosovo published in some editions.
From the content of this book, actual readers and new
generations can be informed regarding some historical and
demographical facts for settlements of this region. This edition for
settlements of this municipality supported from archive and historical
resources and from terrain researches enriches and fulfils our history
for the past of this region for witch region are written two voluminous
projects in Albanian language (Llap during history and ethno cultural
inheritance of Llap’s history) and one in Serb language “Small
Kosovo”. The last one with politic aim, from well known of Jovan
Cijeviq -serb school.
