Kosova settlements - Drenica
Drenica is a micro region and geographical integrity in Kosova
in morphological, geographical, historical, ethnographical, demogra-
phical aspect.
The geographical position, positive conditions for life, natural
treasures, and good clime made it possible for the region of Drenica to
be settled from the time of ILIRS, Albanian ancestors. Ilirs and the
others established number of settlements which during the historic
periods, due to wars, diseases, fires earthquakes etc. had been destroyed
or abounded and afterwards with the development of conditions were
rebuilt. Invasions, migrations of different nations during the history
affected the narrowing of the Ilirian territory. With this started the
change of the population on these territories, especially with the Slav
invasion from the north i.e. from the Carpathian Mountains, who
constituted their government in Kosova by the end of XII century.
This work differs from the others that I have done, because in
those works the division of the settlements is based on administrative
and municipal division. In this case I haven’t done that kind of division
because Drenica is a micro region of Kosova and it represents a
geographical integrity and every municipal division would shorten its
scientific value.
In a particular chapter in this work are analyzed and discussed
the editions of the Serb authors about Drenica and its settlements with a
specific political intention especially the work of Tatomir Vukanovic
“Drenica Druga Srbska Sveta Gora”, Olga Nikolic “Drenica Bastina
Vuka Brankovica” etc.
In this work are included 103 settlements. I tried to make a
description in a fact graphic manner by giving a modest but colorfull
picture in all aspects of historical and economical development of
Drenica region and after that I presented a short history for each
settlement. In every settlement, depending on the available facts 1
presented the following information: the geographical position and
extension, type of the settlement, neighborhoods, respectively the main
families in the settlements, most characteristic names, the archeological

marks and evidences about the old history of a settlement, written
historical and archive sources for a settlement, migration, killings,
massacres, respectively the destruction of the settlements, the number
of inhabitants and families based on the census or other documents
even documents of the sufferings from the Serb aggressor during the
war in 1998-1999. All of these events are more evident in Drenica than
in other parts of Kosovo.
This work does not include everything, but would serve as a
guide to future generation and scholars that would enlarge the studies
and facts about the settlements not only of Drenica but of other
settlements in all aspects, especially in publishing monographies for
every settlement. Today, the network of settlements of the Drenica
region is made by administrative and municipal centers Skenderaj and
Drenas, local centers, settlements, neighborhoods and groups of houses.
In administrative aspect the settlements of Drenica region belong to
municipalities of: Drenas, Skenderaj, Lypjan, Shtima, Vushtrria and
Malisheva.
In the aspect of the area, the highest number of settlements is
concentrated along hilly and mountain region, one part is on the lower
regions, around the regional roads and highways, valleys and other part
is on hilly-mountain regions.
In the historical aspect Drenica differs from other region
because it had a more tragic history. Drenica has always been the point
of resistance against many occupations in earliest historic period, with
leaders of resistance like: Ahmet Deli, Hasan Prishtina, Shaban
Polluzha, Tahir Meha until the last war of KLA with its commander
Adem Jashari and many others.
