THE CULTURAL GENOME
SPACE AND ITS IDEOGRAMS OF THE MYTHICAL STORY
Summary
This book consists of several parts. The first is introductory, intended to introduce the
reader to the subject; it deals with both the presentation of my own work to date, as well
as with a brief review of some studies of other researchers. The subject of research is de-
fined, and a research strategy is made. A definition of basic terms is necessary, so a glossary
is added to the introduction. For a clearer definition of the content, the phrase cultural
genome is introduced as a new term. As a biological genome determines our biological
appearance, so too the cultural genome determines our cultural expression. This is a set of
findings about the functioning of the universe and rules derived from them, which govern
the lives of individuals and communities. These findings and the rules vary in accordance
with changes in the environment, economy, and social relations. The findings and rules can
be seen as a constitutive element of a cultural area. When people verbalize their findings
about the functioning of the universe in a narrative, a mythical story occurs. In this respect,
it is the textual part of the cultural genome. The material aspect of the cultural genome is a
mythical landscape, which is that form of the cultural landscape that people created in ac-
cordance with their mythical conceptions, or at least in this way understood that they could
master the forces of nature with its help.
The second part is devoted to researching mythical stories. From individual structures
of the text fragments of Slavic folk traditions, a composite story in many versions is made,
which explains the mechanism of renewal and describes the cyclical changes of the nature.
The versions are dependent on the living conditions of the environment in which people
lived; they used the mythical story as a magical means to ensure life and well-being. In the
version that was known by ancient Slavs, there are male and female characters who are, in
the summer half of the year, united in constant intercourse, which gives life energy and
fertility to everything. In the autumn their union collapses, the male character grows old
and loses his sexual power, the female figure, consequently, cripples him (castrates, takes his
weapon), swallows him, encloses him in a cavity. With acquired weapon, the infertile female
character rules during winter. The man is apparently dead (he is sleeping) and in the spring,
rejuvenated, he can leave the womans cavity, beats elderly woman, forces her into sex and
consequently, returns her the youth and fertility.
People were using this mythical story as a mental model, which was used to regulate
specific spaces, and the story was in such a way materialized. The materialization of mental
models is spatial ideograms, which are discussed in the next part of the study, which pre-
sents some examples of the mythical landscape in a kind of a catalogue. Initially, it clarifies
the dilemma of whether regularities in this landscape are accidental, or they are the inten-
tional product of the people. Cultural criteria are identified, as well as astronomical and
mathematical tools for the study of the mythical landscape. The catalogue begins with ex-
amples of Christian churches’ sacral landscapes, which are relatively recent, but have build-
ing programs of spatial crosses well documented in written sources. Already in these cases,
the older layers of spatial ideograms are readily visible, which are explored during further
examples. These are mostly arranged as the research took place, to present the maturing of
knowledge more clearly. Again and again, the realization of the mythical story in a mythical
landscape appears. Since there is possible to archaeologically investigate the material com-
ponents of the landscape, the opportunity to determine their chronology is given, which
dates the time of the use of individual parts of the mythical story and its variants. Further-
more, changes in the mythical landscape could be seen, which are a result of the social
stratification of the ancient Slavs and the enforcement of the ruling power of individuals.
Those were attempting in the pre-Christian period to emphasize their connection to the
divine world and, therefore, their importance (see cases in Krakow and Prague). The cases
of Bled (Dlesc at Bodesce) and Podgorje of Velebit show the existence of individuals famil-
iar with specific knowledge about the mythical substance and, according to this criterion,
the existence of priests. All the cases also show how Christianity attempted to overlay and
to annihilate the old faith with churches. For this reason, the churches’ landscape is also an
indirect remnant of the old faith.
In conclusion, the acquired findings are compared with the early medieval idol of
Zbruc in Ukraine and a complete structural matching is established. The Zbruc idol shows
a spatial arrangement of three realms of the universe, control mechanisms of these realms,
a sequence of natural and life changes. Human beings inhabit Middle-earth, and their task
is to ensure the operation of a rotating system, which connects the triple forces of the un-
derworld by four of two doubles in the celestial world. Thus, they are establishing the flow
of life energy.
