The edition consists of memoirs of
Jaroslav
Bidlo
and
Milada Paulová
and their
mutual correspondence stored at the
Masaryk
Institute and Archive of the ASCR
in the personal
fonds
Jaroslav Bidlo
and
Milada Paulová.
The correspondence
was preserved almost in its fullness as a part of the personal
fonds
of
Milada
Paulová.
Some of the documents come from the
fonds
Office of the President of
the Republic stored at the Archive of the President's Office.
With the edited documents, the book aims to present two outstanding per¬
sonalities of the academic and social life in the First Republic,
Jaroslav
Bidlo
(1868-
1937)
and his student
Milada Paulová
(1891-1970),
whose lives reflect not only the
progress of the Czech historical science (namely Slavic and Byzantine studies), but
also the level of Czech and Czechoslovakian university life. The edited documents
are also an interesting source for the study of history of Yugoslavia between the
world wars. Equally interesting is the insight into the privacy of the two individuals
and their relationship, which underwent a major crisis, caused by the difference in
personalities, as well as a differing understanding of science and
Paulovás
interest
in research of the newest history, namely history of Czechoslovakian and South
Slavic resistance during the First World War. Their conflict was not only profes¬
sional, but also deeply personal and flowing from unrequited love and admiration
of
Paulová
for the Chancellor of the President,
Přemysl Šámal
(1867-1941),
a rep¬
resentative of domestic resistance (called Mafia) during the First World War.
Jaroslav Bidlo
and
Milada Paulová
were among those remarkable members
of the historian community who laid foundations of the Czech Byzantine studies
and Slavic studies. They were both of strong character, which later caused the
personal conflict. What they had in common was an unconditional devotion to
the academic work, conscientiousness and accuracy, strong will, thoroughness,
and ambition. They were both able, if they deemed it necessary, to successfully
fight for their interests outside the university turf. But they were separated by
Paulovás
emotional distress and the stubbornness with which she continued to
work on the modern historical subject. She had to constantly choose between
Bidlo
(history of the Middle Ages and Byzantine studies) and
Šámal
(history of
the Mafia). This choice brought on numerous conflicts, a serious threat to her
university career, social judgment and, last but not least, very serious psycholog¬
ical and physical problems.
Bidlo
and
Paulová
were further divided by their opinion on the place of
science in social and political life.
Bidlo
was a supporter of so called pure science,
that is science free of political needs and influences. He opposed the so called
involved historians, among them, ironically,
Paulová.
Although
Bidlo
proclaimed
the need for independence of academic research from political events and was
opposed to involved science, he himself was not always able to stay clear of it.
Although
Bidlo
and
Paulová
managed, with a lot of help from
Šámal,
to
reconcile, the feeling of bitterness always remained in their relationship.
Bidlo

eventually succeeded in convincing
Paulová
to return to intensive studies in
Byzantinology. He could then recommend her with clear conscience for his suc¬
cessor as the head of the Department of General History of Eastern Europe and
the Balkans, where she became an important representative of Czech Byzantine
studies and contributed to their world acclaim.
Thanks to her immensely hard work,
Paulová
managed to continue the
study of her beloved subject
-
history of the Mafia. The attempt at describing
the Czech and South Slavic resistance in the First World War became her life
theme and her insightful published works still remain a key starting point for
contemporary researchers.
This edition is thus a testimony of a complex life of a female scientist, who was the
first Czech woman to earn the highest university degree (in
1925 -
a docent,
1935
-
an associate professor, and in
1939 -
a professor of History of Slavic Nations
and Byzantine Studies at the department of Philosophy of Charles University
in Prague) and become a member of a number of prestigious Czechoslovakian
and foreign academic organisations. This success is contrasted with Paulovas
personal life, marked by premature deaths of her closest family members, her
serious illness, psychological issues, and financial problems. The book signifi¬
cantly complements information in the already published, two-volume edition
