VINKO GLOBOKAR:
MUSICAL ODYSSEY OF AN EMIGRANT
— SUMMARY —
The author discusses the activity of the famous con-
temporary composer and trombonist of Slovenian de-
scent, Vinko Globokar (b. 1934, Andemy, France). As a
virtuoso on the trombone, he identified himself with his
instrument, which became not only the means for his vir-
tuosic playing, but also a part of his specific struggle -
struggle for social justice, for oppressed people. He treats
the medium of the instrument in the broadest possible
sense - far from the conventional approach. According to
his own words, there is always an idea behind the music,
and music becomes a medium for transcending that idea.
Globokar was a co-founder of the improvisational group
New Phonic Art. His musical activity and new approach
to musical interpretation and improvisation inspired
some authors to write new musical works.
Vinko Globokar often contemplated musical interpre-
tation. He treated the instrument on which music was
played and the improvisational process as two very im-
portant aspects of musical performance. Traces of theatri-
cal gestures were connected with both of these elements.
Globokar s treatment of the instrument and its technique
was in accordance with his experimental tendencies. Im-

provisation was one of the basic characteristics of the
musical activity of Globokar - it was at the core of his
musical thought. According to Globokar s reflections, im-
provisation can be established on several possible basic
levels: imitation, integration, hesitation, doing the oppo-
site, doing something different. These elements are dif-
ferentiated on the basis of the type of musical response to
the sound stimulus.
Globokar dislikes inequality, in both life and art. That
is one of the reasons why he broke off his collaboration
with IRCAM and Pierre Boulez in Paris and with ensem-
bles that were directed by Karlheinz Stockhausen, finding
their methods overly dogmatic.
Globokar does not approve of specialization ֊ he
thinks that it is a path to the hell of unification. He envi-
sions a kind of work in which the creator could express all
his talents and creative potentials. He sees the acts of cre-
ating and performing both as very complex and related to
real life and the context in which the composer lives his
life. The critical dimension is always an important com-
ponent of Globokar s creations, and he could never com-
pose anything without connection to real circumstances.
Art for art s sake is an unimaginable element within the
horizons of Globokar s sound galaxy. He is not interested
in writing classic formal patterns - he shapes something
that reflects social implications and whose final form can-
not be predicted.
Among other compositions, the author discusses two
important Globokar works: Cri Alpes (1986) and Kolo
(1988). These were used as case studies and as paradig-

matic examples of composer s way of structuring perfor-
mative musical works.
A composition for alphorn solo, Cri des Alpes is an ex-
perimental work in which author tends to go beyond tra-
ditional boundaries of the instrument. Globokar explores
the new creative potentials of the alphorn and searches for
the new possibilities of integration of playing on one hand,
and singing, speaking, crying, smoking... on the other.
Globokar completely transforms traditional musical in-
stalment into the relatively virtuosic means of instrumen-
tal theater. A narration is based on several situations from
the urban milieu; the composer uses different languages
(Slovenian, German, French, Italian, English), but his ap-
proach tends toward a sound/noise quality, not toward the
meaning of the words. One of the most noticeable features
of the work is its fast move - a performer executes many
actions during a short period of time - that makes an im-
pression of some nervous multitasking process.
Vinko Globokar always expressed a specific nostalgia
for countries of the former Yugoslavia (and their folklore).
For instance, he incorporated two Bosnian songs in his
musical theater piece Kolo for mixed choir, trombone and
electronics. Performers are moving during the perform-
ance, and make the shape of a popular dance in the Bal-
kan region ֊ kolo. Kolo is full of contrasts that are embod-
ied through the texts from Germany, Slovenia and Bosnia
֊and Herzegovina. Kolo is also a metaphor of two worlds
- one is that of a group, or mass (choir), and the other is
connected with an individual, single person (symbolized
by the trombone). A trombone with its electronic amplifi-
cations has also been a symbol of the new, modern time,

while the choir represents an old world and a tradition,
that is, the past.
By analyzing his own instrument, but also his body,
life around him, and different social contexts, Giobokar
constantly investigates the direction and purpose of ar-
tistic musical action. Body, sound, nostalgia, politics, no
tone written without contemplation - these are the signs
of Giobokar s musical/artistic/social engagement.
