доминирају некрополама,

крст као симбол,
лежи урезан и клесан на веома великом
броју стећака.
Готово да нема
некрополе без крета.
Увјерен
сам да
управо
стећци означавају
период
процеса
хришћа-
низације овог
простора.
Ваља
се, дакако,
увијек сјетити
да на
подручју Билеће леже на-
јранији трагови хришћанства
на Балкану.
SYNOPSIS
Tall, upright, monumental tombstones known as
stećci
and dating from the Middle Ages are
to be found in the eastern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. They bear the largest number of
Cyrillic inscriptions in this country at the heart of the Balkan peninsula. These inscriptions
are clear evidence of the continuum of Cyrillic literacy from its beginnings, during the reign
of the Nemanjic Dynasty and together with gravestones and slabs mark the peak of
construction in the period of political domination of the
Kosaca
family during the Humska-
Zahumska Eparchy. This impetus came following the momentous clash of the two continents
known as the Battle of Kosovo.
Since the middle of the 19th century, numerous assertion by our predecessors, based on the
reputed historian and
epigraphist Marko Vego,
have been published without first checking the
original tombstone inscriptions. Our original intention, within a broader scope, was to find
inscriptions formerly unknown but during our research we came across numerous errors in
the reading of the inscriptions by our distinguished predecessors. These errors resulted from
and excessive use and reliance on the plaster cast method without on-the-spot checks. Only
this could explain why these errors occurred. It was therefore necessary to visit every single
one of these burial grounds and examine those inscriptions anew;
reexamine
by marking
carved lines with soft chalk; take photos with a centrally positioned high resolution camera
and finally transfer the result onto tracing paper in the same way that S. Beslagic presented
the inscriptions at Oplicici, except that, one presumes, he used coal rather than chalk.
Naturally, whenever possible, photos were taken of the inscriptions in their original form, but
these photos even with the deep and sharply incised inscriptions (Vrhpolje) could not be used
for the accurate interpretation of the characters. It was, therefore, necessary to examine the
inscriptions of eastern Herzegovina and by correcting them make possible a better study and
understanding of the linguistic structure and epigraphy of Cyrillic letters during the 13th to
15th centuries. This old system of writing letters reappeared, at least in part, late in the 19th
century.
Since
2004
we have made literally hundreds of trips to eastern Herzegovina looking for burial
grounds and tombstones. Many of them were hard to find and some important ones were
destroyed during the second half of the 20th century.
All this attests to the region being the primary area of adoption of the Cyrillic alphabet and the
area from where Cyrillic literacy spread beyond its borders. Furthermore, these inscriptions
corroborate the presence of the Orthodox Church in this region during the Middle Ages
(Vidostak, Veličani...).

Our research sheds light on the correlation between the graphic features of the old inscriptions
of the eastern Herzegovina s ancient tombs and the Cyrillic documents of the same period.
We are therefore of the opinion that one of the preconditions for the successful interpretation
of these inscriptions is a long and dedicated reading of ancient Cyrillic documents. It is these
Cyrillic inscriptions of Bosnia and Herzegovina that validate the integrity and cohesiveness of
this system of letters which we consider to be the very home Balkan alphabet. The
introduction of term bosancica by 19th century researchers and wildly supported by a
number of writers of the 20l century leaves much to be desired and is not supported by our
findings.
In addition it should be noted that the number of inscriptions is far in excess of those adduced
by Messrs. M.
Vego
and S. Beslagic following the publication of their own findings in
1970/80.
Very special attention in our work was dedicated to tombstone crosses and their inscriptions.
In eastern Herzegovina there are large numbers of these monuments made of stone and of
monumental proportions. They often dominate the burial grounds and, moreover, the cross
itself, as a symbol, is carved on a very large number of tombstones
-
in fact there is almost no
burial ground without a cross. We are therefore led to believe that these tombstones
(stećci)
are an unbiguous indication that points to the process of Christianization of this region.
However, it should always be remembered that it is in the Bileca region that the earliest traces
of Christianity in the Balcans can be found.
