MONASTERY IN
TYNIEC
IN SOUTHERN LESSER POLAND
during the Middle Ages
Summary
This publication is one in three works constituting a series concerning me¬
dieval towns in Lesser Poland, among which the most numerous group are royal
towns founded on the initiative of King
Kazimierz
III
Wielki
(Casimir
the Great).
In this group,
Skawina i Jaśliska
-
the former borderland towns in the Krakow
region
-
turned out to be fairly interesting though relatively poorly researched.
Each of those centres has finally acquired its monograph describing its origins,
spatial development and architecture in the medieval period. According to the
author s intention, those studies were to commence a series of monographs
about chartered towns from that period. Therefore, this publication presents the
third part of results of the research on urban layouts and architecture of me¬
dieval towns in Lesser Poland. It refers to three towns: Brzostek,
Kołaczyce
and
Tuchow as no onger royal but monastic foundations within the described period
belonging to the Benedictine monastery in
Tyniec.
The first among the studied towns was Brzostek, situated on the
Wisłoka
River,
in the present-day
Podkarpackie
Voivodeship, approximately
15
km from the town
of
Jasło.
During the Middle Ages, because of is location just outside the reaches
of the Krakow Region, it belonged to the
Sandomierz
Region. The chartered town
must have been established around
1367,
nearby the former village of the same
name which existed already in the first quarter of the 12th century as property of
the Benedictines from
Tyniec. Kołaczyce,
the second of the three towns whose
medieval urban layout and architecture are discussed in the publication in qu¬
estion, is located about
10
km from Brzostek, also on the
Wisłoka
River. The town
might have been founded around
1339,
when the foundation act of the parish
church was issued. The third described town is
Tuchów,
about
20
km away from
Tarnów.
Settlement connected with the last chartered town dates back to the
1st
quarter of the 12th century, and the town itself was established in
1340.
As has been mentioned before, all three centres were founded by the Be¬
nedictine monastery in
Tyniec.
The conditions, in which the monastery became
the owner of the estate where the towns were located, are not fully known. The

document
of the papal legate Giles from
1105,
confirming the estates and privile¬
ges granted to the
Tyniec
monastery by
Bolesław Wielki
and Duchess
Judyta,
as
well as endowments of
Bolesław Krzywousty
and
Radost
the bishop of Krakow,
has been considered counterfeit. For centuries the document served as a basis
for confirming the endowments and privileges included in it, as well as for expan¬
ding them. The document issued by
Kazimierz Jagiellończyk
in
1456
turned out
to be essential for presenting endowments, as well as estates belonging to the
monastery in the period of our interest. It is one of the first documents, concer¬
ning the monastery estates, whose authenticity has not been questioned so far.
In it the king confirmed all the privileges of the
Tyniec
abbey granted by his pre¬
decessors, and named the lands owned by the monastery at the time. It should
be emphasized that this work does not intend to analyse the authenticity of the
first documents concerning monastic property, since the issue is far beyond the
scope of this study. However, they have all been listed here because, like the
already mentioned document of the papal legate Giles, during the medieval pe¬
riod they all constituted the legal basis on which the
Tyniec
abbey administered
and managed their lands.
Source materials for this publication have been prepared by means of a rese¬
arch procedure worked out by the author, during the research on primary urban
layouts in medieval towns. The procedure involved carrying out specially selected
stages of research studies ( desk research, field research, aerial archaeology
research) and confronting their effects, which resulted in hypotheses concerning
the shape and functional
-
spatial structure of the examined centres in the past.
The presented work puts in order the current state of research concerning the
analysed towns. It also encloses previously unpublished colour copies of Mieg s
map, and historical iconography obtained from the Archives of: Voivodeship Mo¬
nument Protection Offices and the Chair of History of Architecture, Urban Plan¬
ning and Art at the Department of Architecture, Cracow University of Technology.
First of all, it presents new, previously unknown research findings connected
with the chartered town structure and location of medieval objects. All the rese¬
arch hypotheses have been backed up with several graphic analyses of historic
maps (Mieg s map and the
19th-century
cadastral plans), as well as contempo¬
rary aerial photographs.
In this monograph one has to emphasise cultural values of the analysed tow¬
ns, both those associated with the medieval urban layout and with the historic
architecture so characteristic for the described regions (near
Jasło
and
Krosno).
Attention should be drawn to the need for protecting the values that in the course
of the last seventy years have seriously deteriorated, which is best reflected by
the
iconographie
material from the first and the second half of the 20th century,
enclosed in the work, when compared with contemporary documentation. To
sum up, there is a call for preparing a complex programme of revalorisation and
protection of cultural relics found in the presented towns which, to a great extent,
could contribute to their tourist and, consequently, economic development.
