SUMMARY
L'VIV ARCHAEOLOGY IN XIX - BEGINNING OF XX CENTURY
In XIX century L'viv was a part of the Habsburg Empire, so it is natural that
issues of development of archaeology in Eastern Halychyna once considered
foreign authors. Until recently, some disparity was seen in the process of history of
archaeology between Polish and Ukrainian researchers. In Polish historiography,
there are a lot of generalizing works dedicated to formation of archaeology in
Halychyna during XIX century. At the same time these issues remained weakly
explored by Ukrainian scientists until recently. In fact, problems of development of
archaeological science in L'viv by Ukrainian scientists and institutions during
XIX - beginning of XX century are extremely important for today's archaeological
science in Ukraine and abroad.
This work includes analysis of history of formation and evolution of
archaeology at only one small region - the Ukrainian part of Halychyna (or Eastern
Halychyna). L’viv is regarded as an important archaeological centre that began its
development since the appear of archaeology as a distinct scientific discipline. L'viv
having research centres, at which, from the early XIX century researchers -
founders of Western Ukraine archaeology, fruitfully worked. Despite the fact that
the title of work is declared as “Archaeology in L'viv” territorial frames of
monograph include the whole region of Eastern Halychyna because researchers,
who worked in L'viv archaeological environment carried out scientific explorations
in the territory of historical Halychyna (former Rus'ke voivodeship). This region
after the first partition of Poland includes the larger, eastern part of Kingdom of
Galicia and Lodomeria. Archaeological artefacts from L’viv museums also represent
the whole Halychyna.
Chronologically, the work dedicated to the period from the beginning of XIX
century - till 1914. Lower chronological limit is rather conventional and connected
with a romantic enthusiasm with antiquities, first field researches, accumulation of
private and museum collections. At this time formation of the archaeological centre
in L'viv begins. The upper limit of this research is the World War I, which caused
interruption of archaeological exploration in this region, and after its finish new
and different stage in the development of archaeological science begins.
Based on the specifics of L'viv in XIX century we should focus our attention
at another important point - existence of two scientific environments - Ukrainian
and Polish. According to archival documents, some serious contradictions and
misunderstandings existed between these two environments (these aspects we will
analyse at the main text), but generally, quite close cooperation took place. The
SUMMARY
crucial role at these relation the human factor played. So, at scientific contacts
relationships between people was important regardless of their religion, nationality
or scientific beliefs. Therefore, archaeological activity of two research environments
in Lviv intertwined and we believe that such approach is only possible for
exploration of subject.
The history of archaeology can be divided into periods according to different
schemes: archaeological eras, outstanding scientist, attached to general historical
periodization or philosophical development. One of the most suitable
periodizations for Lviv archaeology at XIX - beginning of XX century is based on
distinguishing of three main stages: Romantic archaeology, Age of Positivism,
cultural and historical archaeology. The mostof modern historians of archaeology
follow these principles, and it is the most appropriate for use at Lviv environment.
The XIX century was a period of formation of archaeology as separate
scientific discipline. This process took place across Europe and all the new ideas
affected Halychyna. Several events play an important role at the process of
formation of theoretical foundation of science. Among them: new look at the
antiquities of mankind proposed by Boucher de Perth, Darwin s theory of evolution
and adoption of the Christian Thomsen's “three eras system”. Together they
created a definitive basis for archaeological research and has finally provided
archaeology as a scientific discipline.
At the turn of XIX/XX centuries the term “archaeological culture” was
introduced at the literature that has been a defining feature of cultural-historical
archaeology. Analyzing the state of archaeological science during the XIX century ‘
we can affirmatively say that archaeology in Eastern Halychyna developed in line
with global trends of studying of prehistory, libraries of L'viv had the latest
European literature, which contributed to the formation of a powerful
archaeological centre in L'viv.
The scientific life at L'viv is closely connected with the famous University,
Polytechnic, Ossolinski National institute, People's House, Stauropegian Institute;
cultural one - with Lubomirski's, Dzieduszycki s Museums, National Museum .
It is also must be emphasized that academic institution which greatly
influenced the development of Ukrainian science for decades was found in L'viv -
Shevchenko Scientific Society. This organization united in L'viv not only the
leading Ukrainian scientists, but also well-known researchers from Europe who
were full members of the Society. Therefore, we can affirm that in XIX century
L’viv became the centre, where favourable conditions for the development of
archaeological science was formed.
The beginnings of archaeology in L'viv should be associated with the stage of
collecting. Since the late XVIII century to bring antiquities from foreign trips
became a good form for wealthy people. It contributed to formation of private
collections that were often inherited from generation to generation and became the
base for museums. The poorer people, who interested in prehistory began
searching for artefacts in their territory.

SUMMARY
From the beginning of XIX century first appeals appeared, dedicated to
protection of ancient hill-forts, burial mounds, places where castles were located
for preservation of cultural heritage from destruction. At the same time,
archaeology became in some sense "fashionable". Many researchers from different
fields of science applied to new scientific discipline. The first archaeological journey
associated with the name of S. Dolenhy-Khodakowskyi, who was one of the
founders of Romantic archaeology. Among the first researchers who applied to
archaeological finds was Zhehota Pauli - the author of a small catalogue of sites
"Antiquities of Halychyna" (1840), which represented artefacts from different
regions of Halychyna.
At the beginning of XIX century, when archaeological science begin to
emerge, formation of the first museum collection in L'viv took place. In the course
of development of prehistory science Lubomirski and Dzieduszycki Museums
deserve special attention.
In the first half of the XIX century this process were connected with
Lubomirski museum, which in 1823 became the part of the Ossolinski's National
Institution as autonomous unit. Henry Lubomirski was the head of the Museum
for a long time (1777-1850). Museum stuff become among the first scientists who
have engaged in an archaeological study in Eastern Halychyna. They collected,
cataloging, processed accidental finds, such as coins, pottery, terracotta figurines,
stone, bone and flint tools .
In the first, which was called "Archaeological-historical department" exhibits
archaeological materials, divided into two groups. The first one included finds from
the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age and represented by stone and bone tools,
pottery. The second group is represented by medieval materials from excavations,
mostly of sites, mentioned at chronicles.
Museum staff started archaeological research, carried out by the institution.
In particular, the future director A. Klodzinskyy examined hill-fort in Glyniany and
published results of these studies on the pages of Ossolineum journal.
Eexhibition of antiquities in 1861 in Lviv was an important aspect of activity
of the Ossoliński National Institution. It was the first such action in our region and
already at the stage of organization, problems that existed in L'viv archaeology at
the stage of its formation became evident. It primary concerned to the
archaeological exhibits which in most cases were listed in the museum as accidental
finds. Some exhibits have been referenced to certain areas including Zvenyhorod,
Terebovlia and other. After the exhibition, its catalogue was published.
Another institution which became the centre of L'viv archaeology in the
XIX century - Dzieduszycki's Museum. Small museum collection, founded
approximately in 1845 in the family estate Poturytsi in L'viv region by Count
Włodzimierz Dzieduszyckis in a short time was transferred to L'viv and turned into
a powerful scientific institution. Dzieduszycki's Museum played an important role
in the development of archaeology during period of Romantism and also in
subsequent periods.

SUMMARY
Among the Ukrainian researchers first who became interested in archaeology
were the Greek Catholic Theological Seminary graduates, who were jokingly called
"Ruthenian Triad'' by friends. It was Ivan Vahylevych, Jakiv Holovatskyi.
I. Vahylevych since graduation carried out small-scale archaeological exploration of
sites in Eastern Halychyna. His research interests included Halych, rock fortress
Tuştan', Bubnyshche, Rozhirche and accidental finds. Researcher published several
scientific works dedicated to archaeological issues. His colleague Ja. Holovatskyi
worked with archaeological literature, attempted to create catalogue of sites. His
results he approved at I Archaeological congress in Moscow in 1869.
A new page at the chronicle of development of archaeology in Halychyna was
casual find of stone idol, made in summer 1848 in Zbruch River (Ternopil' region),
which became known at literature as Svyatovyd or Zbrutskyi idol. Soon it was
transferred to Krakow, L’viv museums have only copies, but Zbrutsky idol became
a significant stimulus for further archaeological research. There were
announcement to the public appear with a call to report about casual finds, the first
Ukrainian articles also dedicated to this find.
In 1840-th and also in TernopiT region well-known archaeologist, historian
Anthony Schneider begins his archaeological explorations. He was self-taught at
archaeology, in the best sense of this term. His fanaticism to antiquities and hard
daily work contributed to the fact that the researcher discovered a huge number of
archaeological sites (which later were explored by other archaeologists), gathered a
huge collection of ancient books and manuscripts which still preserved in archives
of L'viv and Krakow, has protected from destruction many sites and leaving
information about them at the pages of Lviv journals.
Simultaneously, first field explorations led by one of the first Ukrainian
archaeologists Anton Petrushevych have been started. The beginnings of his
archaeological activity connected with the search for annalistic Halych. Researcher
believed that the princely capital located on the territory of modern Halych. Such
position caused controversy between him and other historians and archaeologists.
Interestingly, after studies in Halych, carried out in 1847-1850 field drawings
remained, that can be used as important source for studying of history of
archaeology in western Ukraine.
In the context of development of romantic archaeology we analyzed only the
initial stage of research activities of A. Schneider and A. Petrushevych, which is
inextricably connected with this stage, when imported collections are beginning to
play a less important role, while representatives of different fields of science looking
for silent witnesses of the past at home .
With the interest in antiquities, there is a revival of interest to activities
connected with preservation of archaeological sites also can be seen. From the early
XIX century series of decrees were published that prohibited export of antiquities
abroad, illegal excavation of burial mounds, hill-forts. In 1864, the first guard of
archaeological sites for Eastern Halychyna was appointed. It was Mieczysław

SUMMARY
It must be emphasized that before the World War I, Shevchenko Scientific
Society was the leading scientific institution in which archaeology took a special
place. The society became archaeological centre for Western Ukraine, which
developed different fields of science. The most extensive field researches in XIX
century, one of the best organized and processed museum's collections, large list of
archaeological literature, participation at major scientific conferences associated
with Shevchenko Scientific Society. Without exaggeration we can affirm that
Shevchenko Scientific Society established traditions of academic archaeology in
Lviv that are developing till now.
Significant changes took place at the university archaeology. In 1905 at the
Faculty of Philosophy the Chair of classical archaeology and prehistory was
established. It was led by Karol Hadachek - first L'viv professor of archaeology.
Entire epoch in the history of archaeological science associated with the name of
Hadachek. He carried out a large number of excavations of archaeological sites, the
most important among which are Koshylivtsi, Gats' near Przeworsk, Plisnesko and
other. The results of researches were published mainly as monographs, scientific
introduced the term "archaeological culture".
His teaching work was equally important. Among K. Hadachek's most
talented students were Volodymyr Hrebenyak, Jaroslav Pasternak, Volodymyr
Antonyevych and other. He made an important contribution to the formation of
the cabinet-museum of archaeological finds, which aimed to provide a
demonstrative study, conducted archaeological seminar involve students to the
field explorations.
Figure of K. Hadachek is rather contradictory. On the one hand he had a
good academic background, made many research journeys, during which has a
possibility to meet with people, discoveries, techniques, carried out a lot of field
works and published their results. On the other hand, it is very common to hear
that professor was a specialist only of classical archaeology, not know prehistory,
that his excavation works carried out without any methods and he poorly oriented
in special literature.
In 1913 the Department of Anthropology was established at the Lviv
University. It was led by Jan Chekanowski. From the beginning of his activity
Chekanowski collaborated with students-archaeologists including V. Hrebenyak
and Ja. Pasternak. They participated in anthropological expedition that explored
the cave Verteba in Ternopil region. Activities of the Department of Anthropology
has shown a good example of cooperation between archaeology and anthropology
at the stage of formation of two scientific disciplines.
World War I affected the development of L'viv archaeology. Beginning of the
war, death of professor K. Hadachek and talented student-archaeologist
V. Hrebenyak, M. Hrushevskyi's departure from L'viv completed the period of
formation of archaeology in L'viv. Solid foundation for this young science was
created. And it gave good results in the next decades.
