The Third Wave of Resistance -Czechoslovak Republic 1948 - 1953
Resume
The Third Wave of Resistance - the Czechoslovak Republic 1948 - 1953 deals with a less
known chapter of the modem Czechoslovak history. The book describes the anti-communist
resistance activities in our country following after the communist party took over in 1948. The
author defends and documents its existence and legitimacy, rejecting the statement that the “third
wave of resistance” (the commonly used name of the anti-communist movement) did not exist
and that all the events were regulated by an invisible power of the State Security, the secret
police of the communist state. The book is divided into three parts: The first, introductory part
presents the details of the establishment of the totalitarian communist government, enumerating
the first resistance attempts, including the reactions of the communist authorities. The author
defends the idea that the communist totalitarian government was imposed on the Czechoslovak
society from the Soviet Union. The second and largest part describes the most significant events
against the communist government in the territory of the Czechoslovak Republic. The author
differentiates between the notions of resistance and opposition, despite the difference between
such activities is hard to distinguish. Special attention is paid to the armed overturns, to the
formation of central controlling bodies and large resistance groups with both national and local
scope. Certain parts are dedicated to the anti-communist leaflets and couriers, including the
system of illegal border crossings and intelligence service. The chapters about anti-communist
resistance describe the reaction to the establishment of the communist totality in the
Czechoslovak army, in the national police, scout and other mass organizations, as well as in the
elite groups of the former Czechoslovak political parties, that were almost deleted from the
Czechoslovak public memory by the communist government. The third part deals with the
foreign exile, having mostly informative nature. The intention is to raise a dispute; the author
understands the work as the first draft, trying to summarize the up to date research into the third
wave of resistance and expects criticism and discussion, which could open the way to a new,
more detailed synthesis. He attempts at concluding that Czech and Slovaks not only were passive
victims, but they were capable of an armed action against the communist violence.
