SUMMARY
The study deals with the activities of
Emanuel
Voska,
an
American Czech, during the First World War from the point
of view of the Czechoslovak resistance movement abroad,
propaganda, intelligence services and the immigrant s
associations. After the First World War, an image was created
ofVoska as the first Czech spy and the foremost associates of
T. G.
Masaryk;
this image remained unchanged. The study
puts this image into the sharper relief and tries to answer
the question how important were Voska s activities during
the war in the context of the resistance movement abroad
and what was his actual merit in the process of creation of
an independence Czechoslovak state.
Voska
left for America when he was

years old, he tried
to make his name in business as
weü
as in the immigrants
associations, in which he presented himself as a freethinker,
Sokol
and left wing radical. His journey to Europe in
1914
when he contacted
Masaryk
and Wickham Steed helped
himself in an unique position as far as communication be¬
tween the immigrants societies in the USA, the representa¬
tives of the Allies and the initial exile center in Europe.
After his return to the USA
Voska
became an leading
representative of the Bohemian National Alliance which
aimed to achieve the break-up of Austria-Hungary as well

as an independence state of Czech and Slovak. The role of
American Czechs who joined this movement concerned
financial support of the resistance movement abroad and
anti-German propaganda.
Voska
understood the importance of information and he
tried to create a network of agents with the task of gather¬
ing and transmitting intelligence. He used members of the
immigrants associations for various secret task and he tried
to make a connection between the American immigrants,
the exile center in Europe and the representatives of the
resistance at home. The results of the Voska s intelligence
activities were straightaway used in anti-German propa¬
ganda. In this regard Voska s interests were the same as the
aims of the war propaganda of the allies in neutral Ameri¬
ca. Group of immigrants who were critical of the political
order in their country of origin became an instrument in
the propaganda contest of the belligerent countries.
Voska
entered successful cooperation with the representatives of
the British secret service in America and became a mem¬
ber of Somerset Maugham mission to Russia in
1917.
In the
spring
1918
Voska
was commissioned captain in the Ameri¬
can army who took part in the intelligence work in Europe.
Voska
linked in his person a patriot
—
a sacrificing worker
of the resistance movement abroad, a propagandist and a spy.
Propaganda in the end became the central of his interest and
all his actions were aimed at the defeat and break-up of Aus¬
tria-Hungary. The manner of Voska s work as a spy and pro¬
pagandist is explained and analyzed in several case studies.
The author argues that Voska s activity make a contribution
to the success of the Czechoslovak movement abroad and
that the manner of his engagement was shaped by the war
and could not be used in the new state of Czechoslovakia.
