The Summary
Demesne of the
Ostrowski
Family of Maluszyn as an example of capitalistic changes in the Polish
husbandry of the 19th century is the principle subject of this monograph. A detailed analy¬
sis of the transformations and development of the Maluszyn demesne gives an oppor¬
tunity to display factors responsible for modernization in Polish agriculture of the

century. It also allows to have a closer look at the elements contributing to economic
growth, methods of introducing progress in agrarian production, breeding and manu¬
facture as well as at these causing difficulties.
The
Ostrowski
demesne, which was an example of a model domain of the 19th
century Congress Poland, serves a perfect illustration of early—capitalistic economic
changes and transformations that occurred in Polish agriculture at that time.
Maluszyn as a village appears for the first time in historical sources in
1266.
Ac¬
cording to the records of National Archives in
Lòdi,
since
1413
it has been owned by
the Pukarzewski family of
Pukarzów,
later by
Wojciech Dunin, Franciszek
and Teresa
Malczewski
and finally since
1738
by
Kazimierz Ostrowski.
The domain purchased in
poor financial condition, thanks to the heirs of
Kazimierz Ostrowski, Michał
and
Wo¬
jciech
becomes modern, bigger and a prosperous one. Due to growing affluence of the
Ostrowski
family, their importance among the Polish noblemen increases. Considerable
position of the house contributes to further development of the domain.
Aleksander
Ostrowski,
the son of
Wojciech,
adds to the advancement of the Maluszyn household
the most. He adjusts its functioning to the new capitalist conditions.
Aleksander Ostrowski,
being given the best possible education in Warsaw and hav¬
ing graduated the most prestigious and renowned foreign universities, administrates the
affairs of the family demesne with great success. General, legal, economic and agro¬
nomic knowledge, chemistry and biology studies together with apprenticeship super¬
vised by his father
Wojciech Ostrowski,
let
Aleksander,
the heir of the Maluszyn estate,
become one of the wisest landowner of the Congress Poland. It also enables him to

government, state administration or
social and financial organizations.
Ostrowski s theoretical knowledge on how properly govern the demesne, his aware¬
ness of the economic changes and transformations of the Western European countries
together with practical approach and in

depth understanding of Polish agriculture
lets him write many works, articles and publications on husbandry and
agro—
technique.
The analysis of the above mentioned presents
Aleksander Ostrowski
as both an
educated and aware of the importance of political and social changes man and as an
owner of the domain who introduces his ideas and knowledge to improve his house¬
hold. It also proves that the development of the Maluszyn demesne is not coincidental
or haphazard, but it is based on accurate knowledge, experience and experiments done
with respect to a well-balanced and rational way which main purpose is to achieve opti¬
mal model of cultivation of crops and to adjust the structure of the manor to changes
taking place in the whole country of Congress Poland.
Economic and financial prosperity of the
Ostrowski
domain is undoubtedly a re¬
sult of the deeply-considered development and modernization projects introduced by
Aleksander,
and a successful match of theory and practice. The monograph also deals
with social relations between the Maluszyn manor and the community of the local peas¬
antry. It is observed that the
Ostrowski
family contributes to this relationship many im¬
provements in social
,
educational or health aspects of everyday life. It is seen as bring¬
ing innovative ideas on different levels of life of the peasant community. What seems
worth mentioning is the fact that there can be seen no hostility towards the
Ostrowski
family form the subordinated country-folks, which proves that the relations were prop¬
er and thanks to that they let the domain become even more prosperous.
The main objective of the monograph is devoted to a thorough economic analy¬
sis of the
Ostrowski
demesne, taking special interest in different stages of the domain,
its inception, the way it is governed, methods used to make the manor more effective,
efforts taken to boost husbandry, undertaken development projects and their funding.
A thorough examination of the above shows a very modern approach to governing of
the manor based on the right organization structure. Full control and uniformity of the
decision-making process stimulating the increase can be observed. Tables of statistics,
lists and analysis of the tendencies in agro-markets are the main factors that determine
the decisions taken. Careful examination of the pecuniary scores allows also to intro¬
duce improvements in the area of money spending and investment plans. This lets the
Ostrowski
family watch, supervise and balance out the economic doings.
Thanks to ground-breaking and novel decisions in governing of the manor such
as innovative land improvements, irrigation projects, rotation of the crops and adjust¬
ing the variety of crops to the character of the manor, natural environment and local
needs and economic conditions, as well as introduction of new cultures, rationalization
of their structure, usage of modern equipment, machines or devices growth in the area
of farming production can be observed.
Extension of breeding of the animals contributes to better efficiency in crops pro¬
duction due to its positive side effect

manure, organic fertilizer used to improve the

fertility of the sou. Also, capital expenditure in manufacturing or processing of crops
such as building flour-mills or water-mills, alcohol distillery and sugar— factory brings
profits to the Maluszyn domain. The sugar-mill in Silniczka
—
one of the belonging to
Maluszyn manor grange, is regarded as a pioneer work in the whole Congress Poland
and acts as stimulus to cultivation of sugar—beet.
Another characteristic element of the
Ostrowski
demesne is sheep—farming sup¬
plying the developing textile and clothier industry in Poland.
Live-stock raising plays also an important role in the domain. Thanks to the better¬
ment of the features of the animals imported from abroad, local husbandry becomes
of higher quality. Well—equilibrated forestry with modernized and well organized saw¬
mills gains constant profits. What is more, forest management and sensible logging to¬
gether with afforestation help to assist preservation of biodiversity in the demesne s
forests.
Not all of the ventures undertaken by the
Ostrowski
family are successful, though.
Investments in textile factory and industrial pottery factory (brick—yard and roofing-
tile factory) show a bit less than expected profits. They produce goods to the local mar¬
ket only, not as they were designed to the domestic one. These investments should be
regarded rather as a way to use inner supplies, materials available and easy to be trans¬
formed. Seen as such, are an example of rational and as farmers—do usage not dimin¬
ishing or impairing neither the condition nor the funds.
The monograph is a kind of a reference work based on the archive materials, pa¬
pers and documents kept in the
Łódź
National Archives as
a Potocki
and
Ostrowski
Family from Maluszyn Archive. They are complemented by the materials from the Roy¬
al Castle Archives in Warsaw, with special regard to the
Ostrowski
Family. Some infor¬
mation has been taken from the 19th century agricultural newspapers and publications
dealing with the rural economy, which can be found in the National Library collection
and the Library of the Warsaw University (the full list of the materials and publications
used is included in the bibliography attached to the monograph).
Method applied to prepare the monograph has allowed the author to reveal and
present much of the information that has not been published before, but it has also
caused some difficulties, especially when accountancy subjects have been discussed.
Shortage of data in the archives, condition of the preserved as well as old—fashioned
methods of accountancy, recording of costs and incomes do not permit to fully pres¬
ent the doings of the
Ostrowski
Family in the Maluszyn domain, all the benefits and
costs connected with governing this manor. Therefore, some aspects are shown in more
of an estimated rather than based on real data way. Nevertheless, the presented anal¬
ysis confirms the 19th century opinions that the
Ostrowski
family Maluszyn demesne
belonged to the leading landed estates in the Kingdom of Poland in the 19th century in
terms of the level of development, its structure and the profits gained. These earnings
guaranteed not only stable and firm economic position of the demesne and social situ¬
ation of the
Ostrowski
family in Congress Poland, but also allowed to have a method¬
ical modernization of it and face with success new dares, initiatives and investments in
other branches of industry, such as mining and metallurgy.
