Resume
Albanian people fought bravely and with courage
during many centuries in history against many
enemies by preserving its honor, dignity, traditions,
habits and love for the freedom of their own country.
In these wars our people used different kinds of
weapons. Most of them they produced themselves, or
they were taken them from their enemies in the
battlefield.
As known, weapon handicraft was inherited from
their ancestors Illyrians, which in the world
historiography are mentioned about the skillfulness
they were made and the way they had been used used.
Different authors wrote about Illyrian weapons.
Roman author Flav Veget Renat in his work
describes Illyrian armament. He mentioned
blacksmiths who manufactured steel weapons and
he also mentioned obligations that the town mayor
has during Roman Empire. Ilyrian weapons are also
mentioned by Mesopotamian author, Eni, said:
“Illyrians are strong with lances and pole ֊ axes”.
Many weapons that are discovered and are being
discovered by Albanian archeologists, including
here also their workshops, become more and more
familiar about the problems that Ilyrian handicrafts
had while processing them. Lances made of bronze,

iron and pole - axes were found on the hill of Holm,
Kolonja, and in the village Tend ֊ Mirdita.
Tradition of weapon manufacturing continued
during medieval. Many historical sources and
denominations of places bearing the names of the
weapons can prove it. Famous handicrafts of this
period were: Bratoe Shpatari from Vlora in 1365,
and Nikolla Shpatari from Ulqin in 1399. Stojan
Shkodrani was famous for manufacturing of
ballista and bombarda (cannon) during 1388
1389. Mark Bogiti from the town of Drisht
mentioned in 1466, whereas, from the town of
Durrës, “magister” Ivan for manufacturing of
ballista. Except for the above - mentioned
handicraft masters in the yaer of 1442, Mark
Progoni, Bartolomeo from Janina, Gjon Injaci and
Gjon Progone , were also very famous.
Except for the filed of weapon manufacturing,
Albanian handicrafts were also mentioned for
other ways of metal processing. Albanian
blacksmiths handicraft had gained so much
reputation out of the country, known by slogan
“Ferrare al modo Albanese”. Albanian knight
were famous abroad, because they were armed
with light armament.

If we want to talk about the weapons that were
used during medieval period, it will look like
described below:
Spears: until the XII century there weren’t any
distinctive changes. They were smaller than
average man’s size and the top of the spearhead
was not longer than 25 cm.
Arrows: were of different shapes, such as:
triangle, leaf, rhomboid, etc. During archeological
exploring in some areas of Albania, a certain
number of arrowheads belonging to VI and VII
century were found.
Axes: found in some archeological areas in Kruja,
Lezha, Dalmatian castle, etc. are of different
shape. It is believed that these axes have direct
origin from the type of Shkodran (town in northern
Albania) ax. Except for their shape we do not
correspond with any other records.
Mace: In the beginning it looked very simple, but
later it has undergone certain changes, which were
more emphasized in dimensions and in the form of
mace ֊ head.
Slingshot: Seems to be very much alike with
slingshot presented on Bayeux Tapestry belonging
to the XI century.
Breastplate armor: were made of small plaques
and metal rings. Though, like the bow they both
had oriental origin, it should be pointed out that
most of the weapons from the XI century was
imported from western countries.
Although in the beginning they were very simple,
by passing of the time they were constantly
improved. This was particularly apparent during
XII and XIII century, when weapon production
had reached higher range of development. The
weapons that had undergone the greatest changes
were swords and mantelets. Like this, the swords
of early medieval period were shorter and wider,
whereas the latest were longer and narrower.
Distinctive weapon development occurred during
the XIV and the XIV century. In this period some
of the new weapons came on the stage. From the
cold - steel or so - called white weapons it is
worth mentioning hangers (yataghans) and self ֊
activating weapons, whereas from fire arms the
canon and the rifle.
Other elements that characterize this period in the
way of armament between knight hood and
infantry hood there was no distinctive change. The
changes were mainly apparent in their dimensions,
because they had to be carried out. It also can be
said that during the XIV century there was no
change between the skillfulness and the way of
fighting between these two military formations,
probably because of the small amount of fire -
weapons that were used.
Infantry weapons that were used at this period were
such as: sword, bow and the arrow, self - shooting
weapons and lance. In the IX century instead of the self
- shooting weapon the axe, helebarda and partisana
were used. To protect from the enemy, helmet, light
slingshots and mantelets were mainly used.
At this time the development of sword processing has
reached its peak. They made a long blade sword with
very sharp tip, long sword hilts and the bottom of
sword hilts with different shapes.
During the XIV century the head lances were leaf
shaped reaching 35 cm. In the XV century they
were stronger and more massive reaching 50cm.

Based on written and figurative sources, it seems
that light - mantelet was used longer, particularly
wire - woven shirts.
In the beginning, self - shooting weapon or crosbow
were more effective than the canon and it was also
more powerful. In comparison, the canon could shoot
5 to 6 times during a day, whereas self - shooting
weapon could throw one arrow every minute. Even
though fire weapon came on stage, comparing them
with self - shooting weapon and their advantages, it
remained more effective weapon in distance war.
Continuous improvement of fire weapons, the interest
for such weapons has risen particularly during the
XV century. They were used in attacks as well as in
defense of certain targets. |
