The monograph Over the
Sava,
at
Crnuče
(»Tam
čez Savo, na
Crnučah«)
aims to provide a lasting memory of the celebrations
upon the
1
50th anniversary of the parish under the heavenly
patronage of apostles St Simon and Judas Thadeus
(Stanko
Stefanie).
The first part of the book entitled Zgodovinske
korenine
(Historical roots) is devoted to the need for organised pastoral care
at
Crnuče
in the past which led to the formal establishment of,
first, a parish vicarage in
1764,
and then, of the independent parish
one hundred and fifty years ago
(1862).
The first part is introduced
by the chapter dealing with the role of a parish in the Catholic
Church, its creation, historical development through time, the role
a parish as a territorially rounded basic cell of the hierarchically
designed Church has today, and what are its perspectives in the
future
(Stanislav Matičič).
The introductory chapter is followed
by two chapters about the church administrative arrangement of
the Slovenian territory during the period from the first mention
of
Crnuče
in historical sources in
1322
and up until today. The
Church of St Simon and Judas Thaddeus, which is for the first time
explicitly mentioned in sources only in
1526,
was most probably
built in the 14th or, at the latest, in the 15th century and devoted
to apostles Simon, as the patron saint of craftsmen, and Judas
Thaddeus, as the intercessor in the worst distress. As an affiliate
of the
Mengeš
mother parish this church was from
1462
to
1668
embodied to the Cistercian monastery in Wiener
Neustadt,
later as
part of the mother parish
Mengeš
through the
Stična archidiaconate
incorporated into the Patriarchate of Acquileia, and from
1752
onwards into the Archdiocese of Gorizia (Lilijana
Žnidaršič
Golec).

In
1764,
Čmuče
was elevated into a parish vicarage and incorporated
into the deanery of
Mengeš,
The Josephian change of diocesan borders
in
1787
incorporated the mother parish
Mengeš,
along with its
subordinate parish vicarages and local chaplaincies, into the Archdiocese
of Ljubljana. In
1809,
the deanery of
Mengeš
was cancelled and together
with the vicarage
Čmuče
incorporated into the deanery
Šmartno
pod
Smarno
goro.
In
1826,
Mengeš
was integrated into the deanery
Kamnik and
Crnuče
into the deanery Ljubljana or, in
1909,
into the
deanery Ljubljana
okolica
(Ljubljana surroundings). Since
1991
the
parish of
Crnuče
has been part of the deanery Ljubljana
Moste
(France
M. Dolinar). The vicarage or later the parish Ljubljana
-
Čmuče
has
included villages
Crnuče,
Dobrava,
Gmajna, Ježa, Nadgorica, Podboršt,
and Prod (today
Brod).
On the basis of
Status animarum
(family
books), which are kept at the Archdiocesan Archives Ljubljana and the
parish of
Crnuče,
the growth of the parish and the social structure of its
inhabitants can be clearly observed (Tone
Krampač).
Due to the lack of sources, especially for the time when the mother
parish of
Mengeš
was incorporated to Cistercians in Wiener
Neustadt,
the origins of the church in
Crnuče
cannot be precisely delimited.
Nevertheless, the visitational records of the Aquilean patriarchs reveal
that the chaplains of
Mengeš
took relatively good pastoral care of both
affiliates of the time, the Church of St Simon and Judas Thaddeus at
Crnuče
and the Church of St John the Baptist at Nadgorica, even before
the establishment of the parish vicarage at
Crnuče.
The question whose
was the initiative for the generally rare patronage of apostles St Simon
and Judas Thaddeus on the Slovenian territory remains open (Lilijana
Znidaršič
Golec).
With the consent of the
Stična
abbot in
1764
Mihael Evstahij pi.
Rastern,
the priest in
Mengeš,
and Peter
Jungovič,
the chaplain in Sentvid, together with the neighbourhoods of
Čmuče
and Nadgorica ensured the necessary funds for the establishment of
the parish vicarage at
Črnuče
with the belonging affiliate of St John
the Baptist in Nadgorica. The purview (settlements subordinate to the
parish) and scope of the vicar s pastoral work was precisely defined by
the so-called
Matricula,
which was in
1768
ratified by the Archbishop
of Gorizia Carolus M. d Attems. The size of the vicarage
Črnuče
remained unchanged upon Josephian changes of diocesan borders and
the incorporation of parish vicarage into the Archdiocese of Ljubljana.

On this occasion, the vicarage was not elevated to the independent
parish due to insufficient income. The
Črnuče
parish vicars carried
out practically all pastoral duties just as real priests would, the only
duty binding them to the »mother« parish in
Mengeš
was the duty
of helping the priests in
Mengeš
with confessions and festive church
services during main holidays, while the priests of
Mengeš
supervised
that the vicars of
Črnuče
received their regular income from the initial
fund of the parish. Jernej Vidmar, the bishop of Ljubljana, elevated
parish vicarages of the time in the diocese of Ljubljana into parishes
on October
25, 1862.
Thus the parish vicar
Jožef Supin
signed the
marriage book as a priest for the first time on November
4
of die same
year (France M. Dolinar).
The preserved parish chronicle, which the
Črnuče
priests started
writting immediately after the formal founding of the parish, enables
a fairly detailed insight into the pastoral work of its priests and their
contribution to the forming of religious, educational, cultural, and
partly also political life in the setdement and its wider surroundings.
At the initiative of the priest Lovrenc Mazek, the old parish church was
torn down in
1880
and
1881
and a new one was built in the same place.
The Eastern earthquake in
1895
damaged the fifteen year old church
to the point that it had to be demolished the following year, and a new
one was built close by in
1897.
Despite numerous natural disasters
and horrors of both world wars the zealous
Črnuče
priests devoted
themselves to the intensive spiritual and cultural life in the parish
(Matjaž
Ambrozie).
Following the tragedy of the Second World War,
during which the
Črnuče
parish was left without a priest for a while,
and like many others the work of the
Črnuče
priest was also enclosed
behind the church walls. Nevertheless, the
Črnuče
parish could pride
itself with a relatively good participation of believers at the Sunday
mass and religious education (during the religious education year of
1969/79
up to
60 %).
With the immigration of people of other beliefs
and members of other religious communities the share of Catholic
believers in respect to the total number of inhabitants of
Črnuče
decreased, while the share of participants of religious education settled
around
30 %.
Especially after the Slovenian independence the diverse
pastoral work broadened (work with the young, family pastoral care,
prayer groups, missionary and charitable activities). Several church

choirs ensure the beauty of the services, while besides missions certain
special forms of worship are intended for the spiritual deepening of
the believers (prayer hours, silent adoration of the Most Holy, Way
of the Cross). Socialising and parish pilgrimages are intended for the
closer connection of the parishioners

Stefanie).
The second part of the book entitled
Osebe
in dejavnosti (People
and activities) is introduced by the article about the priests at
Črnuče,
which through short biographies presents all priests from the first
vicar Peter
Jungovič
(vicar
1764-1778)
to the present priest
Stanko
Stefanie
(priest from
1999).
For the administrators, spiritual assistants,
and chaplains just the years of their service at
Črnuče
are given
(Blaž
Otrin). Some interesting data about the spiritual care at
Črnuče
in the
time of the existence of the Gorizia archdiocese
(1752-1787)
can be
derived from the visitational records of both archbishops of Gorizia,
Carolus M.
d
Attems and his successor Rudolf Edling (Jure
Volčjak).
Brotherhoods of St Corpus
Christi
were a unique expression of the
rich spiritual life in the parish. Besides the existing brotherhoods,
Maria Theresa introduced the brotherhood of perpetual adoration of
St Corpus
Christi,
the members of which committed themselves to
tlie
devout worship of the Blessed Sacrament once a year, for one hour,
assigned to them by a draw. This kind of brotherhood was founded at
Crnuče
already in
1773.
The brotherhood died down in the time of
the emperor Joseph II who did not highly regard brotherhoods. They
were not revived until the 19th century (Ana
Lavrič).
After the Second
Vatican Council, a few new forms of pastoral work for priests were
implemented on one side and closer affiliation of believers to the parish
community on the other, which strongly diversified the religious life of
Črnuče.
In this time numerous marriage groups
(Janko
Jare),
the parish
Karitas
(Ivanka
Slak),
prayer groups
(Marija Markovič),
and the annual
thematic nativity scenes (Jernej Mali,
Andraž
Pecar)
were created. A
special chapter is devoted to choirs that are active in the parish, sextons
and organists
(Stanko
Stefanie,
Vaněk Kociper,
Karmen Banko).
The third part of the book deals with the church of St Simon and
Judas Thaddeus (Cerkev sv.
Simona
in
Jude
Tadeja). Following a
short presentation of both parish church patron saints, for as much
as it can be inferred about them from the Bible and ancient traditions

Next comes the chapter about the extensive renovation
works at the parish
(1991-2000)
and succursal church of St John
the Baptist in Nadgorica
(1999-2004),
the rectory
(2001-2004),
and about the building of
Slomškov dom
(2003-2004)
(Stanko
Stefanie,
Franci Slak). A
special chapter is devoted to the church
bells and their fate in the parish and succursal churches. In
1752,
the
visitational records of the Gorizia archbishop Attems mentions the
three bronze bells at
Črnuče
for the first time but without the data
of when and where they were cast. The oldest bell in Nadgorica was
cast in
1586.
The First World War took toll on all bells. Today the
church at
Črnuče
has four bronze bells (a recast one from
1974
and
another three from
1991),
while the church at Nadgorica has three,
also bronze, one from
1966
and two from
1998
(Matjaž
Ambrozie).
Next is the publication of the Latin original and Slovenian
translation of the confirmation of the Constitutive Act of the
parish vicarage at
Črnuče
from the Gorizia archbishop Carolus M.
d Attems
(1768),
the parish
Matricula,
and the list of income of the
parish vicar at
Črnuče
(Julijana
Visočnik).
The last part of the book is devoted to the geographic and
administrative description of the settlement
(Geografski
in
upravni
oris kraja).
In the area of the Upper
Sava
Plain the settlements of
Ježa
and Nadgorica were founded on the soil of the highest quality;
Črnuče, Podboršt,
and
Brod
were built on the soil of high quality;
while Gmajna and
Dobrava
were built on poorer quality soil. Due
to its geographic position, the community of these settlements was
at first linked to the church and feudal centres in the eastern part of
the Gorenjska region. In the 19th and 20th century the community
formed the independent municipality of
Črnuče.
The construction
of new traffic connections recently bound its administration to
Ljubljana. On the basis of censuses we can see that
Črnuče
achieved
its greatest degree of population growth in the decade from
1961
to
1971,
when immigrants from all over Slovenia and other parts of the
former Yugoslavia settled at
Črnuče
(Aljoša
Bizjak Pitamic).
