Summary
In a comprehensive and systematic manner, this book presents an over¬
view and analysis of the Early Iron Age in the part of Europe which encom¬
passes some of the territory of Croatia. The analysis is based on concrete
archaeological indicators, but it does not evolve into a typical synthesis of
an archaeological period in a given region, but rather in a comprehensive
and thorough anthropological and sociological study of Iron Age communi¬
ties in the territory of Croatia, examined in a wider context of the European
Hallstatt
Culture. In view of the fact that it largely relies on new excavation
of the site of
Kaptol
near
Požega
-
already a well-known site with recognized
importance at the European level
-
this book is an important original contri¬
bution to the research of the
Hallstatt
Culture in general.
The book begins with the chapter with the indicative title Time of Change,
which introduces the reader to the world of the Late Bronze Age, the key
point of departure of all the cultures of the Early Iron Age. Within the ove¬
rall picture of this crucial period, two elements are especially singled out:
the funerary ritual and the metallurgy of bronze. The attempt to define the
beginning of the Iron Age, especially in relation to the appearance and use of
iron, presents a particular problem. Although the origin of the metallurgy of
iron and its spread is discussed in detail, it is clear that the new period is not
defined solely by its metallurgy, but rather by a range of economic, social and
spiritual factors which were equally important in the process of transforma¬
tion of one era into another.
The chapter
Hallstatt
Cultural Complex
-
Europe in the Early Iron Age provi¬
des a comprehensive overview of all important features of this dynamic period
of human history. At this time, western Europe saw the emergence of a special
type of princely seat
- Fürstensitz.
These centres owed their importance to their
location along favourable communication routes linking regions that were some¬
times very distant, and/or to the vicinity of deposits of minerals and other raw
materials, ranging from precious metals to iron, salt and graphite. The presented
examples of princely seats illustrate, in the best possible way, the complexity of
economic relations at the time, reflected particularly evidently in the graves of
the aristocracy which ran the economy. This is corroborated by detailed studies
of the burial ritual and the social structure of the communities. An analysis of
groups belonging to the Eastern
Hallstatt
circle provides an insight into the most
recent scientific knowledge, in a way which is both easy to consult and under¬
standable to a wider public. Particularly valuable is a detailed presentation of the
Early Iron Age groups identified to date in northern Croatia. The analysis offered
largely relies on the author's archaeological excavation, on-going for more than
ten years, at
Kaptol
in the
Požega
valley, one of the most important sites of the
Early Iron Age in Croatia.
Kaptol
occupies a key position in
supraregional
studies
of the territory of the south-eastern Alps, southern
Pannonia
and the Danube
region.
The central section of the book is dedicated to various aspects of the lives
of
Hallstatt
communities which contribute to their being identified as sepa¬
rate and recognizable cultural groups. It provides an anthropological-socio-

logical study of a period in the historic development of mankind. The chapter
Trade and Exchange
-
Networks and Contacts contains deliberations about the
communication of the time, and about the goods that were traded. Although
the territory of northern Croatia has been considered to be on the edge of
this wide-ranging civilizational transformation, the exploration of the site
at
Kaptol
has confirmed the high relevance of the region between the rivers
Sava
and
Drava
for the transfer of ideas and knowledge in the period in which
powerful princely seats emerged, which shaped the archaeological map of
Europe. Analytical and methodological procedures applied in this chapter
will serve as indispensable guidelines for future scholars who study the Early
Iron Age period in the territory of southern
Pannonia
and the south-eastern
Alpine region.
The research of the
Hallstatt
period focuses on the warrior aristocracy,
which took active part in communication and controlled the network of con¬
tacts spreading over the whole of Europe at the time. The ruling class, whose
power and influence are reflected in the exotic and prestigious goods they
owned, is the topic of the chapter entitled Warriors
-
Elites of the
Hallstatt
World. Such artefacts have been found in large numbers in the princely tumuli
of
Kaptol,
and they have also been discovered in other sites in northern Cro¬
atia. The contemporary interdisciplinary approach to the interpretation of
new archaeological data collected in this region has reverberated powerfully
in European archaeological science. The recent discoveries made at
Kaptol
have been underlined as an excellent comparative basis for the study of the
warrior class of the Early Iron Age, and the role and relevance of that class
for the entire community. The large number of tumuli excavated at this site
allows the application of statistical and comparative methods in the typolo¬
gical analysis of discovered material remains. The results of anthropological,
archaeozoological and archaeobotanical analyses are equally important, as
they are indispensable elements of the toolbox of modern-day archaeological
science. All these are parts of a methodological structure essential for the
development of a detailed concept of the warrior. Such a model of research
can also be applied to other archaeological periods. A natural continuation
of this topic is found in the chapter on Feasting, which discusses some speci¬
al activities that were practised by the community. Nowadays, one can only
speculate about the significance of this practice on the basis of depictions
in situla art and various categories of finds. Comparisons with the peoples
of classical antiquity reveal the full complexity of the communities which
produced some of the finest artistic monuments of European prehistory. In
addition to its social significance, feasting certainly had a deep ritual impli¬
cation, and in many of its aspects it reflected the worldview of the Iron Age
communities. Another element of the ritual sphere is presented in the chap¬
ter Women
-
Followers or Rulers? which uses modern concepts to discuss the
role of the woman in
Hallstatt
society
-
a topic that has not attracted much
attention until now. But the richly furbished female burials under tumuli
discovered at
Kaptol
allow comparisons with the Etruscan concept of the wo¬
man and her role as holder of both temporal and spiritual power in the soci¬
ety. Further evidence of this has been provided by analysis of ancient texts,
which can offer explanations of some insights gained through archaeological

excavation.
It is precisely this combination of new excavation, executed using
modern methodology, and the development of 'outside the box' models, that
has resulted in a compilation of a much more dynamic picture of individual
segments of the complex
Hallstatt
social structure. Although the typologi¬
cal and chronological analysis of material remains of human communities is
the basis of the traditional archaeological approach, this intriguing topic has
shown that the material culture that is available to us is but one part of the
world which surrounded the human being who should always be the focus
of interest of the humanities. The chapter
Hallstatt
Religion
-
Age of Myths
and Heroes demonstrates this very vividly, as it discusses the intimate sphere
of beliefs and fears, which the community tried to formulate as understan¬
dable and explainable concepts. Designated individuals or groups identifi¬
ed and interpreted signs from the environment and natural phenomena for
other members of their communities. In the Iron Age, besides the warrior
aristocracy which played the leading role, religion was also a strong cohesive
factor, especially in uncertain and dangerous times. Recognizing certain pro¬
cedures and/or objects as religious symbols is an important step in the inter¬
pretation of the complex models which were undoubtedly used to underpin
and justify the position of the ruling class as legitimate master of earthly
goods, and also agent of contact with the afterlife. A good illustration of this
concept is provided in the chapter Funerary Ritual
-
Landscapes of Continuity
and Change. This section of the book continues with the previously analysed
concept of myths and heroes, and describes tumuli as tombs of especially
prominent individuals within communities, who transcended their worldly
existence to enter the mythical sphere. The position of their tombs in the
landscape bore important meaning, both for members of their communities
and for travellers or conquerors, who were given a clear message that this
was a consecrated area for the select deceased. The tumuli were erected alon¬
gside communication routes leading towards fortified settlements, and their
internal organization probably reflected the complex structure and relations
within the community. More evidence of joint effort, such as could be mou¬
nted only by well-organized communities, is given by fortifications linked to
settlements. The chapter Settlements
-
Seats of Rulers or Centres of Communi¬
ties? analyses various ways in which settlements reflect the highly structured
societies of the Iron Age. The settlements of the period were connected by a
complex network of contacts, which linked them not only with other local
communities, but also with some very distant regions. Unfortunately, the
current level of research in northern Croatia does not permit a study of the
hierarchy of settlements in individual regions, which remains as a task for
future explorations.
Through a comparative analysis of concrete archaeological situations in
the territory of Croatia and elsewhere in Europe, this book clearly demon¬
strates that during the Early Iron Age, northern Croatia was not merely at a
periphery of European historical and cultural events; rather, it actively parti¬
cipated in their shaping and re-shaping.
