The role of Jews in the economic development
of Polish Lands
(Summary)
Jews have been present in Poland for so many centuries that it renders the
country quite exceptional on a global scale. Treated inhumanely in Western
Europe, they found here a safe haven and good career prospects.
Known for their
entrepreneurship,
they played a major role in the eco¬
nomic history of Poland, and especially in the development of trade, craftsman¬
ship and finance. The literature of the subject, however, lacks discerning and
substantial publications to justify the statement. The available analyses are often
superficial, while the conclusions turn out to be contradictory, which may be
partially excused by the lack of appropriate reference materials and statistical
data.
Generally speaking, the competition introduced by the Jewish element had
a very positive influence on the Polish economy, although it also caused some
conflicts and tensions. Jews were better at coping with the conditions of the
Market economy, which in time resulted in displays of reluctance, verging on
hostility, in part of the Polish society. Despite
anti
-Jewish initiatives, they never
abandoned their economic expansion.
Apart from religion and ideology, economy became a serious source of
anti-Semitism. Currently, this issue arouses controversy, especially in the mass
media, with numerous biased statements and opinions, which
-
among other
things
-
are also related to the economy.
The main duty of economic historians is to develop a profound and syn¬
thetic reflection upon the role of the Jewish nation in the economic growth of the
Polish Lands. After the year
2000,
numerous publications on Jewish issues have
come out, but they mainly discuss the problem of the holocaust, religion, culture
and customs in the Jewish Diaspora in Poland.
Therefore, there is an urgent need to perform research in this field and to
issue
contributive
publications, which could later come in handy in the prepara¬
tion of the synthesis devoted to the role of Jews in the development of the Polish
economy. This is an important initiative, since the displays of anti-Semitism in
Poland can only be eliminated by learning the truth about Polish-Jewish rela¬
tions. We do hope that this publication will be a small step on the way to com¬
pleting this objective.
The collection consists of three parts, containing twenty chapters alto¬
gether. The first part comprises the issues relating to the period before the First
World War. The second one focuses on the economic and social phenomena

related to the Jewish community in the interwar period, while the third one deals
with the Second World War and the post-war period.
The first part of the collection constitutes eight chapters, with the opening
article by
Janusz Skodlarski,
who discusses the prominent reformers1 attitudes
towards the role of Jews in the Polish economy. The text offers an opportunity to
learn about the opinions of
Stanisław Staszic,
Princess Anna
Jabłonowska,
Prince Ksawery
Drucki-Lubecki, Franciszek Stefczyk,
Rev.
Piotr Wawrzyniak,
Władysław
Grabski
and
Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski.
In the second chapter
Szymon Kazusek
presents and analyses the issues
regarding the Jewish Diaspora in Polish trade between the 16th and 18th century.
The author emphasizes the demand for further, comparative research which
would systematize the knowledge in the field.
In the third chapter
Krzysztof Woźniak
demonstrates the phenomenon of
smuggling across the western border of the Kingdom of Poland, which escalated
in the first half of the 19th century, presenting the economic and cultural conse¬
quences of Jewish participation in the act.
The fourth chapter, co-written by
Marta Dolecka
and
Józef Duda,
is de¬
voted to the analysis of Jewish credit activities in the the
Hrubieszów
Agricul¬
tural Association
(Towarzystwo Rolnicze Hrubieszowskie),
a foundation estab¬
lished by
Stanisław Staszic.
In the fifth chapter
Krzysztof Broński
focuses on the issue of quantity and
quality of the Jewish contribution to the Galician industry and crafts at the turn
of the 19th and 20th centuries, presenting selected Jewish entrepreneurs who had
a significant influence upon the industrialization of
Galicia.
In the sixth chapter
Aldona Podolska-Meducka
presents the development
of the railroad in the Kingdom of Poland in the second half of the 19th century,
illustrated by the example of the Ivangorod-Deblin Railway, whose major con¬
cessionaire and builder was the Jewish entrepreneur Jan Gottlieb Bloch. In rec¬
ognition of his contributions to the development of the railroad network, he was
nicknamed the King of the Railway by his contemporaries.
In the seventh chapter
Konrad
Meus
addresses the issue of Jewish partici¬
pation in the development of self-governing organisations, and
-
at the same
time
-
the broadly understood Galician economic life in the second half of the
19th and the early 20th century.
The first part of the publication concludes in the text by
Magdalena
Kwiatkowska, who analyses the role of Jews in the development of the Polish
book market in the 19th century.
The second part of the collection focuses on the interwar period and con¬
sists of eight chapters, with the opening text from
Wojciech Morawski,
who
scrutinizes the issue of Jewish capital in Polish banking in the Second Polish
Republic. The author strives to investigate the causes of the dramatic reduction

in the importance of the capital within Polish banking system in the first decades
of the 20th century.
In the tenth chapter
Katarzyna Czajka
describes the Jewish participation in
the Polish cinematography trade unions during the interwar period.
In chapter eleven
Paweł
Grata presents the standpoint of Jewish MPs to¬
wards the state tax policy during the Great Depression, since the representatives
of the Jewish minority in both chambers of Polish parliament were very active
politically in regard to various economic issues.
In the twelfth chapter
Edyta Majcher-Ociesa
broaches the issue of Jewish
land estates in the
Kielce
Province between
1918
and
1939,
analyzing the quan-
tative aspects, purposes and applications of these investments.
The thirteenth chapter, written by
Jerzy Łazor,
focuses on the influence of
Jewish emigration from Poland upon the relationships with Palestine during the
interwar period. The author s intention is to demonstrate to what extent the hu¬
man movement contributed to the growth of goods traffic and capital transfer,
and became the foundation of the development of Polish transportation services
in the Near East.
In the fourteenth chapter
Iwona Kawalla
analyses the impact of the Jewish
contribution to commodity trade in
Kraków
between
1918
and
1939.
At that
time
25%
of the city s
halfa
million population was of Jewish origin.
The article written by
Elżbieta Słabińska
constitutes the fifteenth chapter,
which focuses on legal aspects of Jewish business activities between
1918
and
1939.
The author analyses legal regulations with regard to their stimulating or
inhibitory influence upon Jewish entrepreneurs activity.
In the sixteenth chapter
Krzysztof Popiński
focuses on Jewish students at
the University of
Wrocław
between
1811
and
1945.
The article is an attempt to
determine such aspects as the number of Jewish students at
Wrocław
University,
their chosen majors and fields of studies, as well as the students ideals and or¬
ganizations.
The third part of the collection, consisting of four chapters, refers to the
Second World War and the post-war period.
It begins with
Damian
Bebnowski s article on the impact of the Jews
deported from Western Europe on food supply in the
Łódź
Ghetto in
1941.
The
author based his analysis on the information found in the
Łódź
Ghetto Chronicle.
In chapter eighteen
Mirosław Kłusek
strives to present the complicated
position of the Jewish community in Poland immediately after the Second World
War, demonstrating numerous issues such as occasional Polish hostility to Jews
who were returning or repatriated from the East, their safety, or civil recovery
and reversionary rights.
In the nineteenth chapter
Mariusz Jastrząb
focuses on the perseverance
of cultural stereotypes on the economic role of the Jewish community in Poland.

The activity of Jewish money-changers after the Second World War becomes the
starting point of the analysis.
The twentieth
-
and last
-
chapter, written by
Sławomir Kamosiński
re¬
fers to current Polish-Israeli business relationships. The author analyses the
influence of strong Jewish bonds with Poland upon current economic relations,
studying official and unofficial conditions of collaboration, trade and capital
flow, with particular focus on direct investments.
Offering this monograph to the reader, we are fully aware that it is merely
a small contribution to the debate on the role of the Jewish nation in the eco¬
nomic history of the Poland, and
-
for obvious reasons
-
it does not exhaust the
topic. As mentioned above, the authors intentions are to encourage economic
historians to take up further research in the subject area, in order to create
a broader synthesis of the issue.
