Summary
Poisonous gas was the most widely used means of enforcing the racial-biological
goals of the Third Reich. The first document on application of exhaust fumes comes
from 18th September 1941 when it was used in a Mogilev mental asylum, where
a gas chamber was built. The second attempt, this time with a prototype of a herme-
tically sealed lorry structure, took place in Sachsenhausen around 3rd November.
The first mass killing of the Jews by a gas vehicle is documented on 26th Novem-
ber in Polish Koźminek. On 8th December, the first extermination camp started
to operate in Chełmno, where only gas vehicles were used for liquidation of the
prisoners. Between October 1941 and April 1942, thirty five structures were built
on the chassis of the American Diamond company, of the German Opel-Blitz and
of the Austrian Saurer. During postwar investigation, the identity of almost twenty
gas vehicle drivers was revealed, but only thirteen could be questioned and charged.
Realization of the gas vehicles and their implementation was managed solely by
Walter Rauff from the position of the II D 3a department. Supervision over his acti-
vity was personally accepted by the RSHA leader Reinhard Heydrich. However, the
new technique of mass killing faced its limitations, especially breakdowns, difficult
serviceability in bad weather and the necessary cleanup of the structures. A second
form of extermination, i.e. centralized camps of the Reinhardt operation, came into
being. Top scientists as well as common criminals who participated in the “T4” pro-
gram moved to newly created teams in the extermination camps of Bełżec, Sobibor
and Treblinka. The hard core the Chełmno perpetrators came from Herbert Langes
special commando, which killed inmates of mental asylums in Germany and Po-
land. A close personal link between the gas vehicle designers and organizers of the
Reinhardt camps can be documented by a friendship between the chemist August
Becker and mechanic Lorenz Hackenholt who started the chambers and aggregates
in the mentioned camps.
Reports on the existence of gas vehicles supported by eyewitness accounts were
first aired by the BBC in the early June 1942 and one month later, large articles were
published in the London Times and the Daily Telegraph. The free world viewed the-
se reports with utmost distrust, which blocked any potential help to the still survi-
ving victims of the Nazi regime.
The worldly justice reached a shameful end, because it affected only a few tens
of perpetrators of this human tragedy. Since the end of the war, 51 people from the
Reinhardt and Chełmno camp staff have been imprisoned in the FRG and GDR,
but some have never entered the jail. Chemical scientists from the Berlin KTI who
participated in testing prototypes of the vehicle and who knew why the gas was con-
ducted into the structure, also escaped punishment.
