Strewn across the Indian landscape is a new phenomenon
—
the non-
biodegradable plastic carry bag. Yet plastic is more than a litter problem.
It is not an indigenous species. It is a symptom of a much larger malaise.
Plastic is a product of the 20th century, the most versatile synthetic man-
made material
-
it moulds, encases, packages and enables a whole way
of life. Its success has been based on an infinite supply of hydrocarbons,
mainly oil, and a northern industrial model based on economies of scale,
growth through material throughput and spiralling consumerism. It is a
way of life that, like plastic, is unsustainable.
In the
1980s
the Indian Government sanctioned the expansion of its
petrochemical industry and large-scale production facilities have now
come on-stream.
Life in Plastic lifts the lid on the plastic industry in India. It questions
the assumptions in internal Government of India reports and the effect of
plastic on human health, the environment and the social fabric of India.
Some plastics clearly provide vital services, while others do not. But all
plastics are problematic, some more so than others, and their effects are
far-reaching.
This age of hydrocarbons is coming to an end, and India must prepare
for a new age of carbohydrates, where our material needs can be met
through traditional and modem bio-technologies including bio-plastics. The
future lies in the biodiversity nurtured by the village economies of
countries such as India. Life in Plastic suggests less material (and less
hazardous) ways of satisfying needs through a fusion of northern and
indian
sustainable practices: using renewable materials; reserving plastics
for long-life and specialised services; and developing service instead of
material based economies.
