Magna Carta is widely regarded as a potent symbol of the freedom of the individual. The most important document ever forced on the King of England by his subjects, it has resonated through the centuries and across the globe like no other legal text. The eight hundredth anniversary of its first issue at Runnymede in 1215 presents a unique opportunity to assess the seminal importance of a document which, more compellingly and influentially than any other, enshrines the individual’s right of access to due process of law. For this richly illustrated volume Nicholas Vincent, Professor of Medieval History at the University of East Anglia, is joined by a range of leading experts on Magna Carta from across the world to reflect not only on the circumstances of the Charter’s genesis, but also on its precursor ■texts and its enduring importance through subsequent centuries. Magna Carta was serially reinterpreted by later generations in contexts that were often far removed from the specific grievances of King John's barons.
