The concentration camp Gross-Rosen was established in the province
Schlesien (Silesia), in the village Rogoźnica, near a granite quarry which for
almost five years was the main place of work for its prisoners. The first
transport of about 100 men arrived on 2nd of August 1940. For nearly a year,
this camp was a subcamp of the concentration camp Sachsenhausen. Ho-
wever, on 1st of May 1941, it was removed from the administration of Sach-
senhausen and became an independent concentration camp of the II cate-
gory. Gross-Rosen camp was systematically expanded. Its first subcamp
was set-up in 1942. According to camp physician, Friedrich Entress, by Fe-
bruary 1945, there were 80 subcamps, however, the most recent research
prove that by January 1945, the system of concentration camp Gross-Rosen
consisted of 86 subcamps.
In October 1944, the first bombs were dropped on Breslau (Wroclaw).
It was a portent of the forthcoming January offensive of the Red Army. Eva-
cuation of the people who lived in Breslau, as well as in other Lower Sile-
sian towns, was carried out at the last moment. In January 1945, Reichsfiihrer
SS and Chief of German Police, Heinrich Himmler decided that in the view
of the enemy advance, concentration camps must be evacuated, and their
prisoners must be transported to more distant camps. An emergency eva-
cuation of the concentration camp Gross-Rosen was announced in the third
week of January 1945, when Soviet troops reached the river Oder. Evacu-
ation of the main concentration camp and its subcamps, and their liquida-
tion that followed, was carried out in several stages which resulted from
the progress of the Soviet offensive in Silesia. The first stage of it fell in the
third week of January. Subcamps located on the right (eastern) side and
along the river Oder were evacuated to the main camp. In the second stage,
which started in the first half of February, many of the remaining subcamps,
along with the main concentration camp, were liquidated. Prisoners from
these camps were transported to different concentration camps or to those
subcamps of Gross-Rosen camp that still functioned.
This study is an attempt to reconstruct the fate of those prisoners of the
Gross-Rosen system who were not evacuated, meaning those, who were
left in the camps hospitals in 11 subcamps, as well as those prisoners who
stayed in 31 subcamps that were excluded from the evacuation. Prisoners
of both groups were freed as result of actions undertaken by the Red Army.

riods in individual subcamps, allows us to assume that about 11 000 wo-
men and 6500 men were liberated there. The majority (85%) of this group
were Jews, mainly citizens of Poland, and Hungary but also of France, Hol-
land, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Germany, Austria, and even Greece, and
Turkey.
Prisoners reactions to the end of their misery varied from happiness
and joy to fear, and even desire to take revenge on their oppressors. Most
of people wanted to return to their former places of residence and find their
relatives. Others however, knew there was nothing to return to because
nobody awaited them. They stayed in the places they were liberated, trying
to begin new lives; hence, in some places, like Głuszyca or Dzierżoniów
relatively large populations of Jewish people grew. There were also those
among the former prisoners, who were not given a chance to enjoy their
freedom for very long. They were persecuted by the communist authorities
for their activity in the Polish resistance (Home Army).
