Resumé
This book deals with the life and work of Czech historian Vaclav
Chaloupecky (1882-1951), one of the foremost pupils of Jaroslav Goll,
Josef Pekar and Josef Susta. The archival and oral-historical resources
used here to cover the life and work of Vaclav Chaloupecky enabled
the possibility of displaying a story interrupted by three breaks: the
Great War, Second World War, and the Communist coup d’etat in
Czechoslovakia in February 1948. The result should show a patchwork
of the Czechoslovak inter-war historiography since the last generation of
the so-called “Jaroslav Goll School”, up to the ascension of the so-called
marxist historiography in the late 40s-early 50s.

Vaclav Chaloupecký started his career with the intention of becoming
a poet. Together with František Gellner and Josef Mach, Chaloupecky
was one of the better known personas of the anarchistic literary movement
in Bohemia, especially in Mladá Boleslav and Prague.
Chaloupecky studied history at Charles-Ferdinand’s University in
Prague during the years 1904—1908. During that time he went though
a conversion and created his own ideal of intellectual exclusivity, typical
for modernist science and especially for the institutional aristocracy of the
so-called “Golf’s History School”. From this point of view Chaloupecký
started to put his interest into elite culture and the exclusive individuals
of the late Czech Middle Ages, the Luxembourg and pre-Hussite era,
symbolized by the “enlightened” rule of Charles IV and his high clergy, and
also the “gothic enlightenment” of the intellectuals of Charles University whom
Chaloupecký thought to be the main source of the Hussite movement.
Soon after he finished graduation Chaloupecky was appointed as the
court archivist of Count Lobkowicz in Roudnice nad Labem. Although
he wanted to put his scientific interest into late medieval topics, he was

forced to concentrate on editing documents bound with the age of Czech
Contra-Reformation and the years preceding the Thirty Years War. Soon
after serving his duty on the Eastern front of the Great War, Chaloupecký
decided to leave his service and offer his knowledge and abilities for
the sake of the newly founded Czechoslovak Republic. In early 1919 he
was sent to Slovakia to serve as an Inspector of the Slovak archives and
libraries. In trying to carry out his duties, he realized very soon that the
division of archival sources between the new state and post-war Hungary
is an unfinishable task. Together with the obstruction of the Hungarian
delegation entrusted to the task of archival division the Prague-based
centralistic tensions were preventing Chaloupecký from the successful
establishment of a central archival institution in Bratislava.
Soon after that, in 1922, he accepted Josef Šusta’s invitation to teach
as associate professor at the newly established Comenius University in
Bratislava. Appointed the regular professor of Czechoslovak history the
following year, he started to train a new generation of Slovak historians.
He also unveiled a brand new field of historical research, as he decided
to unveil the early medieval Slovak history within the Hungarian natio-
nal story based on the indivisibility of the Kingdom of Hungary. With
this approach, which made him the founder of modern Slovak medieval
studies, he accomplished his most important work Staré Slovensko (Old
Slovakia) in 1923. Yet Chaloupecký s attempt was not accepted by the
traditionally oriented Slovak intelligentsia, especially due to Chaloupec-
ký s persuasion of the unity of Czech and Slovak (Czechoslovak) culture.
On that account he soon stepped into a series of polemics with all gene-
rations of Slovak nationalistic orientated scholars, including his own
students and colleagues, especially with Jozef Škultéty, the Custodian
of the traditional Slovak institution Matice Slovenská, and with his own
younger universtity collegue, Josef Pekars pupil Daniel Rapant.
Despite the long lasting Slovak controversies, the so called
„Czechoslovakist“ stayed and taught at Comenius University during
the whole inter-war era, hated by Slovak nationalists, just to became
the Rector of the mentioned university in the pre-Munich academic
year. Although he was called to take over Josef Pekar s Prague Chair
of Czechoslovak history in 1937 (after the death of his tutor), an offer
he gladly accepted, the new authonomous Slovak government did not
hesitate to officially expel Chaloupecký (together with most of his
Czech colleagues) from Slovakia during the break of 1938/39.
During his stay in the protectorate, Chaloupecký edited some of the
influential and also popular oriented works about early medieval Czech

hagiography (Prameny X. století 1939, Na úsvitu křesťanství 1942), he did
not join the resistance movement. Nevertheless, his only son Václav was
imprisoned for his participation in the resistance, and also due to spying
on Czech industrial production in favour of the USSR. His sentence
made his father almost calm until the end of the war.
Soon after the fall of the Third Reich, Chaloupecký returned to the
University chair in Prague and made efforts to fulfill his teacher s duties.
Soon after the Communist coup detat in February 1948, he realized his own
isolation and soon after that he felt the repression of the new government.
Although he did not follow his friend and colleagues into prison, his new
works were not supposed to be published, and also his post as an editor-
in-chief of the foremost historical journal Český časopis historický (Czech
Historical Journal) became a burden, as he was continuously forced
to dissolve the edition of the journal which he deliberately accepted at
the beginning of 1951. At that time he realized that most of his inter-
war historical ideas were obsolete, his teachers work disrupted and his
publication possibilities strictly limited. Having lost most of his parents
heritage, including his home, he died as a result of an unexpected heart
attack in his native village of Dětenice in November 1951.

However, the aim of this work is not to create a traditional scientific
biography, but rather to cover the individual experience in which
Chaloupeckýs works are based. Accenting his controversies with political
and mainly scientific colleagues and opponents (Daniel Rapant, Josef
Pekař, Rudolf Urbánek and others) I am trying to uncover the basics of this
historians work. Following the persuasion that historiography as an act of
science is altogehter a literary genre of its own kind (H. White, L. Doležel,
K. Jenkins, S. Schama), and due to this fact that it also mirrors the
individual experience of its author, I am trying to show the dependencies
between the individual story and the scientific work itself. As far as
Chaloupecký married the well known Slovak poet Ludmila Groeblová, his
private affairs influenced his focus on Slovak research. On this basis I am
trying to uncover and rethink the stereotypes bound with Chaloupeckýs
personality and work to the present day (in the final, methodological
chapter I am also trying to express the principles of this point of view).
The opening chapter covers the milieu of Czech Paradise, the speci-
fic Bohemian region which Chaloupecký shared with his teacher Josef
Pekař. The latter part of the chapter deals with Chaloupecký s univer-
sity studies in Prague, the conversion of his individual values, and the

contradictions that influenced his scientific work during the archival
service by the Count Lobkowitz in Roudnice nad Labem. Here I also
deal with the affect of his marriage and the roots of Chaloupecky s
dependence on Slovakia.
The second Chapter uncovers Chaloupecky s archival, university and
scientific efforts in Slovakia during the inter-war era. Here I try to depict
the problems connected with the establishment of the Slovak archival
system and also the scientific polemics showing the clash of two kinds
of modernity (Rogers Brubaker). Chaloupecky lead long-lasting personal
disputes with Jozef âkultéty, Daniel Rapant, and Milan Hodza, the
prominent political and scientific Slovak personalities. The polemics show
the differences of Czech and Slovak focus on the process of modernisation,
and on co-habitation within the common Czechoslovak state which finally
ended up in Chaloupecky’s expulsion from Slovakia in 1938.
The third Chapter covers two areas of Chaloupeckys medieval work -
the hussitica, based on a description of the elite culture of the Luxembourg
and Pre-Hussite period in which he followed and also preceded the views
of his tutor Josef Pekar, and the Czech hagiographica. The latter part deals
with Chaloupecky s digression into the web of Czech legends and the so
called Kristian-question. Here I try to show how Chaloupecky, following
Josef Pekars influential yet controversial effort from 1903, ended up in
concluding the relation between the teacher and his former pupil. The
final part of the fourth chapter shows how the results of Chaloupecky s
two decades of hagiographical research were challenged by Chaloupecky s
rival Rudolf Urbânek, and later in the early 50s become obsolete through
new discoveries carried out by Chaloupecky’s friend and cooperator, the
classical philologist Jaroslav Ludvikovsky.
Chapter four is meant to be the closing one, covering the backstage
talks concerning the process of Chaloupecky’s seize of Josef Pekars
heritage at Charles University during the years 1937-1948. The final part
tells the story of Chaloupecky’s loss of the family heritage in Dëtenice,
which ended up in expropriation of his house (and his study room as
well) and soon led to Chaloupecky’s untimely death.
The result should not just show a biographical sketch but also (and
mostly) the web of scientific relations between the three Czechoslovak
Universities, the backstage politics in the Czechoslovak archival and higher
education system; and last but not least, the changes that Czechoslovak
historiography went through during the first half of the 20th century.
