ANNOTATION
The documents and materials of
"Prosvitá"
organizations in Podillia
region and other institutions, which participated directly in their
activity in the significant period of the national history
-
the age of
Ukrainian revolution
1917 - 1920,
have been offered in the introduced
collected volume. They reflect different aspects of enlightenment and
cultural-educational practice, complement greatly our ideas about
enlightenment processes of that time, and allow us to form more system
knowledge on many latent questions of state and cultural character.
Great amount of documents, included to this publication, are kept
in central and regional archives of Ukraine. In particular, the authors

In the mentioned archives we found a lot of important documents
and materials, revealing pedagogical and cultural-enlightenment
activity of the organization
"Prosvita" in
Podillia region as for
establishment of libraries-reading halls, making performances,
lecturing, organization of educational institutions, creation of choirs, etc.
Great amount of documents is taken from periodicals of those days,
represented both, by All-Ukrainian and regional newspapers: "Nova
Rada", "Narodna
Volia",
"Sviato Podillia", "Shliakh", "Zhyttia
Podillia",
magazines
-
"Selo", "Osvita".
The documents, offered in the collected volume, allow us to trace
evolution of different plots, connected with founding and activity of
"Prosvita"
organizations in Podillia region in
1917 -1920.
In this context we should single out some basic topics, which
determined contextual essence of enlightenment organizations, and
which until now remain the field for scientific discussions. In particular,

the published documents afford opportunity to trace the specificity of
founding of cultural-educational organizations under the conditions of
adoption of different political regimes in the region. Registration of the
founded organizations by the organs of court jurisdiction and creation
of regional affiliates in small towns and villages are of great interest as
well.
Separate group is represented by the documents, which explain
subject activity of
"Prosvitá"
organizations. Complexes of documents
about participation of
"Prosvita"
organizations in founding of primary,
secondary and high schools of the region, and also creation of the
system of out-of-class education, represented by gymnasia for adults
and organization of Ukrainian study courses, are of great importance.
This segment of activity of
"Prosvita"
organizations is shown in
regional dimension by the example of specificity of rural and urban
territories;
Undoubtedly, special attention deserves study of the question of
participation of
"Prosvitá"
organizations in Podillia region in founding
and activity of Kamyanets-Podilskyi State Ukrainian University. It is
generally recognized that famous figures of
"Prosvita"
organizations in
Podillia region took active part in this process. They were among
authorized people, who solved the most difficult questions in the capital
and in Podillia region.
Complexes of documents illustrate indefatigable work of
"Prosvita"
organizations in the field of founding libraries, filling them with
Ukrainian literature for all sections of population.
Other field of activity of
"Prosvita"
organizations in Podillia region,
offered by documentary body of the publication, is making theatrical
performances and concerts. The present materials allow affirming about
existence of strolling theatres and organization of national choirs. In this
aspect we should also lay the stress on participation of the members of
"Prosvita" in
literary parties.
Separate layer occupies activity of
"Prosvita"
organizations in
publishing books and textbooks for different groups of pupils of
primary and secondary schools. In this sphere
"Prosvita"
organizations
in Podillia region showed excessive activity and were recognized all
over Ukraine.
At last, a lot of documents are about the rise of womenfolk of the
region.
"Prosvita"
organizations founded dress-making courses, took
part in the work of feldsher's stations and hospitals.
