Summary
The main goal of the book is to study spatial patterns of voting behaviour in parliamentary
elections in Czechia between 1920 and 2006. The book seeks to analyse voting behaviour
through studying political preferences expressed by the elections of political parties in the gen-
eral elections. Hie four types of guestions have been asked:
1. How large are regional differences in electoral results on the territory of Czechia. How
the voting patterns look like?
2. Do voting patterns tend to be stable over time or they tend to vary from one election to
other?
3. Do voting patterns reflect spatial patterns of socioeconomic characteristic of popula-
tion? Do relations between voting patterns and socio-economic characteristics of population
change over time?
4. Are there any similarities between pre-WWII and post-1989 voting patterns?
The structure of the book reflects its main scientific goals. After the introductory chapter
which introduces the topic to readers and describes theoretical approaches and methodology
that is used in the book, second chapter follows which provides readers with basic informa-
tion about political parties that were relevant in the observed time period. The parties were
classified into the party families in accordance to their ideological positions. Such approach
enabled to search for continuity of voting behaviour even in situation when parties merged,
spit, ceased to exist or came into existence. This also enables, to some extent, to overcome the
fact that for several decades there was no free political competition of political parties at all.
The third chapter concentrates on describing the historical context within which studies par-
liamentary elections were held. It includes the basic information about the legal system and
the structure of elected bodies with the emphasis on the electoral laws. The results of elections
are described as well.
The fourth and the fifth chapter of the book equally concentrate on the analysis of the spa-
tial patterns of voting. The fourth chapter pays attention to the pre-WWII elections while the
fifth chapter to the post-1989 elections. In both chapters, the spatial patterns of electoral re-
sults of the most relevant political parties of the time are analysed. Hie voting for such par-
ties provides us with some information about the political values to which voters are adhered.
Both chapters first answer the question to what extent the support for individual party fami-
lies is spatially equal or unequal and what is the level of spatial concentration of political sup-
port. In the pre-WWII case, the special attention is devoted to voting patterns of Czechoslovak
and German political parties and party families. In the second step, the spatial variability of
voting support is measured and their changes analysed. The voting patterns of the most rele-
vant political parties are displayed on the maps. Both chapters are completed by the passages
that analyse the mutual relationships between voting patterns and spatial patterns of so-

cio-economic characteristics of population. Finally, the sixth chapter compares the pre-WWII
and post-1989 voting patterns of selected parties.
The results of analyses proved that the spatial differences in voting behaviour do and al-
ways did exist and that they are and always were substantial on the territory of Czechia. It
holds despite of the fact that the country has always used the system of proportional repre-
sentation which, at least theoretically may not encourage the existence of spatial variations in
voting support. All relevant political parties as well as all party families had some clearly iden-
tifiable electoral strongholds as well as the week spots. Such territorial differences in voting
behaviour were, generally, greater before WW11 than after 1989 when, simply speaking, voting
behaviour became more spatially homogeneous. The most important reason for this is the ex-
pulsion of Germans from Czechia after WWII and, consequently, the lack of politically relevant
Czech - German ethnic cleavage after 1989. But even if voting behaviour in pre WW1I Czechia
are analysed separately for regions settled predominantly by Czechs and regions settled pre-
dominantly by Germans, the pre-war voting patterns are found to be more spatially unequal
than that of post-1989 period. In both observed periods some party families had systemati-
cally more spatially unequal political support than others - the high spatial inequality of vot-
ing support is typical for Christian Democratic and Agrarian parties, while the low spatial in-
equality is typical for Social Democrats.
The analyses have also shown that voting patterns were rather stable in both observed
periods (that is before WW1I and after 1989) or have been changing over only moderately
over time. The regional differences in voting behaviour seem to be deeply rooted. In the coun-
try which uses the system of proportional representation and voters could effectively choose
from the multitude of parties in the general elections, many people change their minds and
switch their voting preferences from one party to other. They, however, tend to switch to dif-
ferent party of similar ideological orientation in most cases. Thus, when voting support for
party families are analysed instead of voting support for the individual parties the voting
patterns tend to be highly stable. Even the establishment of such anti-system parties like
Sudetendeutsche Partei in 1930s have not altered the basic features of spatial patterns of vot-
ing support of other parties.
Our analyses also sought to explain why the voting support is so diverse across the coun-
try. It has been proved that much of the spatial variation in electoral results can be attributed
to spatial variations of socio-economic characteristics of voters. Three characteristics proved to
play a key role in this respect before WWII: nationality, socio-economic characteristics and re-
ligious affiliation of voters. The most important underlying factor in the pre-war Czechia was
undoubtedly the division of voters between Czech and German ones. With the only exception,
which was the Communist Party, there was no relevant party that would be really all-national.
All parties were either Czech(oslovak) or German and, therefore, there were clearly oriented
to reaching either Czech of German voters. From the spatial point of view two clearly separate
party systems co-existed on the territory of Czechia in the pre-WWII era. The other important
underlying factor of pre-WWII voting patterns was the socio-economic one. Agrarian parties,
not surprisingly, received support mostly in agrarian regions, the parties of the Left obtained
much of the support from regions with the high share of industrial population. Christian
Democrats were the more popular in regions where the Roman Catholics were highly repre-
sented among voters. What is interesting, exactly the same type of relations could be iden-
tified in both "Czech” and "German" part of the county. In this respect, the situation has not

changed substantially after the breakdown of the Communist regime. In contrast to the pre-
war situation almost no Germans lived in the country after 1989 and, thus, ethnic cleavage
practically lost all its relevance. The socio-economic and religious factors, however, maintain
their importance. The basic logic of relations between voting patterns has also basically re-
mained the same.
The voting patterns, however, cannot be fully explained by the influence of above men-
tioned underlying factors. Our analyses showed that spatial variation of voting behaviour af-
ter 1989 is somewhat linked to spatial variation of pre-WWII voting behaviour. However, the
effect of "historical factors” has diminished over time. It was much stronger in the beginning
of 1990s when post-communist party system was only being established and socio-economic
cleavages were not yet developed. In such situation, voters, lacking the experience with differ-
ent political parties and with the consequences of their policies for their personal lives, tended
to use historical experience, transmitted over generations within families, as the important
information that guided their electoral decisions. Later, when socio-economic inequality was
more clearly visible and perceived by voters, the importance of historical factors was gradually
diminished. The effect of religious affiliation on voting behaviour, however, remains important
and stable. The stable voting pattern of Christian Democratic parties reflects stable spatial pat-
tern of religiosity. Analyses also showed that historical event or processes, like the expulsion
of German population after the WWII, tend to have long term impact on political behaviour of
the population of the affected areas.
