PAŁAC PUSŁOWSKICH
SUMMARY
In
2014
the
Jagiełlonian
University in
Kraków
celebrates its 650th birth¬
day. To commemorate the anniversary of the establishment of the Univer¬
sity, which was founded by King
Casimir
the Great, historians prepared
and published a series of monographs concerning the historical buildings
of the
Jagiełlonian
University. The buildings constitute a part of the cul¬
tural heritage of the University and of Poland. They also are a part of the
memory of many generations. Until today, six monographs have appeared.
The present one, which describes the history of one of the buildings, is the
seventh to appear. The palace of the
Pusłowski
counts is the main subject
of the present monograph. Since
1945
the palace houses, among others,
the seat of the Department of Musicology of the
Jagiełlonian
University.
The present book concerns three subjects: the first one has to do with
a presentation of the palace as a work of architecture, the second one has
to do with the art collection of the palace, and the third one relates to the
owner of the palace and its users.
Since
1885
the palace, which is located in the present-day
10
West¬
erplatte
Street near the main Train Station, belonged to the aristocratic
Pusłowski
family. The building, which was purchased by this family, was
remodelled in the neo-Renaissance style and adapted to new require¬
ments as an urban residence of the family. Distinguished architects of
Kraków
of that time were involved in the remodelling of the building:
Tadeusz Stryj eński
and
Władysław Ekiełski. A
magnificent collection of
works of art, one of the most attractive art collections in
Kraków,
was lo¬
cated in the palace. The collection included works by foreign masters such
as Massys, Cranach, Delacroix, Lotto, and Polish ones such as
Matejko,
Malczewski, Boznańska,
Mehoffer.
The collection also comprised
militar¬
ia, Gdańsk
furniture, tapestries and wall hangings, the most valuable of
which belonged to the French prince
de Crequi.
There was also glassware,
china, miniatures, musical instruments, including a Pleyel piano, which
174
PAŁAC PUSŁOWSKICH
was played by
Fryderyk Chopin. The Pusłowski
counts also established
a reading room and a library in the palace. In the
1930s
the library com¬
prised more than twenty thousand volumes. Apart from books and old
prints there were musical scores, maps, atlases, engravings and drawings.
In the
1930s
the last owner of the collection and of the palace,
Franciszek
Xawery
Pusłowski,
opened a part of his collection to the public and or¬
ganised three professionally prepared exhibitions of works of art with the
collaboration of the National Museum in
Kraków.
Franciszek
Xawery was an extraordinary figure. He was universally
known and respected in
Kraków.
During several decades he belonged to
those figures who exerted considerable influence on the history of the
city and on the relations of Poland with the world. In the inter-war period
the host of the palace was honoured to receive distinguished representa¬
tives of the world of politics, culture and learning, including the president
of the United States, Herbert Hoover, who was his friend;
Julianna,
the
future king of Holland; the regent of Hungary,
Miklós Horthy;
the mar¬
shal of France and Poland, Ferdinand
Foch;
prime ministers of European
governments, ministers of foreign affairs (including the Italian minister
of foreign affairs, count Galeazzo
Ciano),
and even Indian
maharajas.
His
original and unconventional drawing room belonged to the most interest¬
ing locations in
Kraków.
During World War II, from
1940
till the end of
1943,
the palace housed the seat of the sole legally operating Polish insti¬
tution of humanitarian aid:
Rada Główna Opiekuńcza
[The Main Protec¬
tive Council].
After the end of the war
Franciszek
Xawery continued his drawing room
activities. Apart from the aristocrats, his drawing room was frequented
by artists such as
Andrzej Wajda, Tadeusz Kantor, Wisła
wa
Szymborska;
there were also sportsmen and numerous students among the visitors. In
1953,
during the Stalinist period, he decided to hand over the palace with
the garden, annex and
100
of the most valuable artifacts of his collection
to the Jagiellonian University. These artifacts enhanced the collection of
the university museum, which is located in Collegium Maius. In
1968,
after the death of
Franciszek
Xawery, the remaining part of the collection
went to the Jagiellonian University through the decision of the court. Due
to the fact that a part of the collection was dispersed in the
1
960s, the
University was engaged in successful efforts to repossess the artifacts to
which it had a rightful claim.
After
1945,
apart from the aforementioned Department of Musicol-
ogy, the palace was occupied by residents and private persons. The palace
was also the seat of university institutions such as the university museum.
For a certain period of time the rooms in the palace were used by the de¬
partment of English and by the department of German of the Jagiellonian
SUMMARY

University. After
1968
a literal free-for-all fight for the control of the
building between the university users began. For example political sci¬
entists, and, intermittently, scholars of Polish and English, attempted to
take control of the building. However, it was Professor
Karol
Estreicher,
the director of the museum who made the most energetic attempts to as¬
sume control of the whole palace. Eventually, the authorities of the presi¬
dent of the University recognised the arguments of the musicologists as
the most convincing ones and the latter gradually took over control of
the building room by room [Latin: cameratim]
.
In one of the rooms they
established a research centre devoted to
Ignacy Jan
Paderewski s output
together with a biographical museum. In another room they organised
a research centre devoted to the life and work of
Wincenty Lutosławski.
To this day, both institutions conduct their activities which are stipulated
by their agendas.
After
2000 -
thanks to the financial support of the Social Committee
for the Protection of the Historical Monuments of
Kraków
-
there began
the redecoration and restoration of the palace and, to some degree, of
the garden. Because of the considerable degree of degradation of the resi¬
dential space of the annex, the attempts to restore it proved ineffectual.
It was pulled down, and a new one was built in its place. The new annex
constitutes an integral part of the Institute of Musicology. Since
2002
the
building bears the official name of Collegium Musicologicum. It consists
of two buildings: the Puslowski palace and the annex, which bears the
name of
Zdzisław Jachimecki,
the founder of university musicology. The
overwhelming majority of the historical artifacts which constitute a part
of the collection was transported to Collegium Maius and to other univer¬
sity buildings. However, many valuable objects remain in their place, in¬
cluding the exceptionally beautiful neo-Baroque staircase and the former
dining room which features historical architectural components such as
Renaissance columns and a fireplace. Today, the room is used as a small-
audience room, in which sessions, conferences, book promotions, anniver¬
saries and concerts of classical music are organised.
Even though several decades elapsed since the death of
Franciszek
Xawery Puslowski, the benefactor of the Jagiellonian University, he is still
held in good memory. He is remembered as one of the greatest donors in
the history of the university. His magnificent collection, which is one of
the main features of the university museum, is remembered as well. The
gift of the Puslowski is a clear milestone for other donors who would like
to follow in the steps of
Franciszek
Xawery.
