SUMMARY
Devotion to the Our Lady of Sorrows is one of the many forms of Ma¬
rian devotion which has the ancient historical roots. The Slovak Catholics
worship the Our Lady of Sorrows as the patroness of Slovakia and the Slo¬
vak nation. This fact was confirmed officially by Pope Pius XI. on

1927

Slovak nation. This paper wants to reveal deeper historical roots of this
devotion. The publication is based on the latest historical knowledge and
the scientific research. It uses a large number of the historical sources and
literature. It reveals a new context and brings some new insights that have
not been published yet. For better clarity and understanding, it is inter¬
nally divided chronologically according to the different historical periods.
The reflections about the Our Lady of Sorrows were already presented
in the Christian antiquity, but the devotion to the Mother of Sorrows
(Mater
Dolorosa)
is rooted in the 12th century. It found its own expres¬
sion in the various
iconographie
portrayals in the fine arts. The specific
devotion to the Our Lady of Sorrows was developed from the devotion
to the Mother of Sorrows in the 15th century. In the same way, devotion
to the Our Lady of Sorrows is a way to devote Mary as the Mother of Sor¬
rows.
Devotion to the Our Lady of Sorrows encompasses whole Marian devo¬
tion and expresses it in one particular form. Pope Benedict
XIII,
promot¬
ed the devotion to the Our Lady of Sorrows and in
1727
it was extended
to the whole Church. The celebration of the feast of the Our Lady of Sor¬
rows was set for Friday before the Big Friday. Extension of Marian de¬
votion in Slovakia was rooted in the times of the Principality of
Nitra
(the 8th and beginning of the 9th century), continued to Great Moravia
(833 - 907)
and subsequently in the Hungarian Kingdom. Already a large
number of Marian pilgrimage sites and special devotion to the Our Lady
of Sorrows in Slovakia demonstrated and still indicates the Marian par¬
ticularity which is a typical feature of our country and its people. Devo¬
tion to the Our Lady of Sorrows can be traced and documented by the
patronage of the churches and chapels (Marian patronages are the most
common), but also rich motives in fine art.
A milestone in the expansion of devotion to the Our Lady of Sorrows
on the territory of Slovakia was the establishment of the pilgrimage place
in
Šaštín
since
1564
and then the pilgrimage temple at this place, conse-

crated in
1762.
This pilgrimage place dedicated to the Our Lady of Sor¬
rows and embedded in ethnically Slovak environment was the largest one
in throughout the
Habsburg
Empire. The Our Lady of Sorrows became
close to the Slovaks also because that she expressed profound grief and
sympathy with suffering. This suffering was a part of their lives. It was
represented mainly by epidemics, famines, wars, natural disasters and
various personal problems. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries,
the people have already openly talked about the Our Lady of Sorrows
as the patroness of the Slovak nation. This was attributable mainly by
the Slovak priests Stefan
Závodník, Ferdiš Juriga
and
Florián Tománek,
who consistently expanded devotion to the Our Lady of Sorrows and
pointed to a link with the Slovak history and suffering that accompanied
the nation on its path through history. This view was connected with the
progress of the national idea and defence against the pressure of Hun-
garization. The Our Lady of Sorrows was also actual in the period of the
Czechoslovak Republic, when the Slovaks struggled for their religious,
national identity and better social conditions. The Our Lady of Sorrows
has become an expression of suffering in times of the religious oppression
of the Slovaks during the Communist regime and is actual even today,
at a time of general crisis of morality and social uncertainty. It is im¬
portant to emphasize that devotion to the Our Lady of Sorrows points
to a higher spiritual dimension and meaning of the Slovak history, namely

history, as if it formed a deeper sense of the Slovak history and its axis,
which finds its most adequate expression just in devotion to the Our Lady
of Sorrows. This applies to the collective memory of the nation, family
memory and the memory of individuals. The approval of the feast of the
Our Lady of Sorrows as a day of the public holiday of the Slovak Repub¬
lic by the Act No.
241/1993
Coll. confirmed the importance of devotion
to the Our Lady of Sorrows in the Slovak history. Devotion to the Our
Lady of Sorrows is an important historical topic that will still raise interest
of the historians, but also the wider public.
